Nowadays, its like 10% of all Catholics (in America) attend Mass regularly, yet of that 10% only 50% regularly Confess yet probably 90% receive Communion
I agree, the wanton attitude toward the Body of Our Lord and the widespread desecration of the Eucharist is a massive problem.
To get technical about it, if you are not in a state of mortal sin, you are only required to confess once a year. Unless you are following people around to see how many times they confess, you have no way of knowing.
Also, did you ever stop to think people receive Communion frequently because they love Our Lord and want to be with Him, not in a spirit of “wanton desecration” or just shuffling up there following the crowd? Unless you are a mind reader like Padre Pio, you have no idea what people are thinking when they receive. Furthermore, if the church attendance has drastically declined, it makes sense that the small percentage who are involved with their faith enough to keep attending are involved enough to appreciate receiving and want to receive Our Lord.
Before I returned to regular practice of my faith a few years ago, I had many years where I failed to go to confession including missing the once-a-year requirement because I was afraid of confession. My Mass attendance was also sporadic during this time, however when I attended I did receive because I still wanted to be with the Lord despite recognizing that I was a mess. I said many prayers along the lines of “Be merciful to me, a sinner,” and “Lord please help me and be with me because I don’t have a freaking clue spiritually right now.” When I returned to the Church and went back to confession, I confessed all this along with many other things i did. How do you or I know that the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist all those years, whom I had never had ANY intent to disrespect or defile by receiving Him, did not help bring about this change in my life?
You need to start looking at people through the eyes of compassion and mercy, as fallible humans, not as a bunch of wanton sleaze bags so much less holy than your sainted self and everybody who went to church in the 50s.
