He always wanted to be alone, even at SOLT, he said they let him live in a hermitage far away. I remember him saying some of his friends were afraid how far away he was, was it safe, but he had his gun and dogs.
Was it the monastic life he craved or just to be alone and not have community prayer and things like that. I think we can assume when the money got better, he moved off and to Montana.

Maybe sins of omission…possibly FALSE charity?
Maybe Corapi really employed the use of worldly cleverness…
We are thinking about the people who were familiar with him, but think about the people who are drawn to the Church by good men, and then unreasonably, see this scandal of a public priest and avoid being drawn to the Church’s core because of it.
I like to think of scandals like these and such trumpeting of sins, the pedophile ones,etc. as the Devil, outside of the gates, constantly screaming DONT GO IN THERE they’re BAD! Badgering potential souls and weaving thorns amongst the walls to discourage anyone to really know the Church
He can’t do anything to those who find Christ, but he is hounding people who haven’t yet from going near, and seeing that beyond the wall of scandal is the ethereal beauty and essence of the faith and the core of the body of Christ…
Living so far away from the SOLT or anyone else in authority probably helped contribute to the trouble.
I am sure Satan helped out as well.

If you listen to the link I provided for the Al Kresta show John Corapi had an DUI arrest in 1999 -only 8 years into his priesthood. It’s a matter of public record apparently and can be found on a Sacramento, CA government website according to Jimmy Akin. On the DUI arrest/conviction It lists John Anthony Corapi/ John Anthony Coradi. Tony Coradi is the alias he used when he first met his accuser through an escort service and he presented himself as a businessman. This did not just start a couple of years ago unfortunately. Apparently the misdeeds span more than half of his priesthood. As much as we want to find compassionate excuses for John Corapi’s behavior I’m afraid this is going to be the Jim Baker/ Jimmy Swaggart of the Catholic Church. He has been fooling a lot of people over a long period of time.

What we KNOW is that his fraternal community
has ordered him to cease preaching in public as a RC priest.
That should be sufficient for all.
This entire circumstance is already reaping ill benefits.As much as we want to find compassionate excuses for John Corapi’s behavior I’m afraid this is going to be the Jim Baker/ Jimmy Swaggart of the Catholic Church. He has been fooling a lot of people over a long period of time.
It is creating a rift between my mother and I as she has always been and continues to be a staunch supporter and defender of Corapi.
The more the story unfold, the more militant her support and defense of the man becomes.
Yet she has also drawn a connection between Swaggart and Corapi.
I have taken to not even discussing the subject around her.
Perhaps when this all blows over we will still be on speaking terms.

the sooner the truth comes out, the easier it is to not be deceived, and to help others grow past this “blow” who are more emotionally effected.
People need to not be discouraged by the actions of one mere man, they need to cling to Christ.
His fans have trying to cram the infinite into a Finite Father Corapi, ’ no surely he is blameless.’ is some of the tone of the conversation as they were rash in accusing the it seems faithful priest at SOLT, as well as his superiors. Yet the actions they took this week was one of concern and consideration for souls.
There is only one man who is blameless, and he needs to have those who are suffering or hurt or even becoming disillusioned by the actions of this mere priest, Give this suffering and hurt up to God, What Corapi did to his followers (knowing he lied at the very least) , “they did it to me”
St. Augustine says, hearts are restless until they rest in the Lord. People need to turn away from Corapi’s influence and remember Jesus Christ and the work at the Cross is where comfort can be sought.

Somehow, I can’t see The Black Sheepdog tweeting, “I am going back to my order with my tail between my legs…”
I am just so sad about all this. The thing that really saddens me the most is the people who have attached so much of their salvation to this one man. He was only the conduit for Christ, and the Holy Spirit. We Catholics should NEVER get so attached to a personality. I cringe when I see Joel Osteen on television playing the humble Man of God persona, and all his devotees holding up their Bibles. Corapi may have gotten too big for himself and believed his own publicity. But there is NO excuse for him leading “his sheep” away from the Church, no excuse whatsoever. He needs to stop this, and now.

Sorry to hear that. Yes, it’s probably better or wiser to just let the emotions subside before discussing the follies of being militantly supportive of Corapi.
It’s not good to try to cram the infinite into a finite man. Rather as finite men, we have to put our finite actions and unite them with the infinite.

I saw him live in 2006 in a small venue, a church in Florida, maybe 300-400 people. He had no time for anything other than his speaking. I got the same impression then (full of himself).
I will continue to pray for him. I don’t think anyone enters the priesthood with the intent of becoming a rock star but let us all remember, he has done this before. It may just be his cross.

I don’t know if his mother is around still, but I hope she is well hidden, because in this internet savvy world of ours, if someone wants to investigate someone, they can.
It doesn’t matter to some if he lied about military records, or even his stories of conversion, but it does matter and should. He was saying to do one thing, and doing another. He preached on humility, the cross and suffering and people listened. The message, no matter how effective is lame without some show of obedience to it.
Everything but talk is not what most religious preach, what you do without words is more important. He opens the pandora box with doing anything else to fan the flames, believe me, stones will get unturned by angry Catholics, Catholic haters, it doesn’t matter, they will find things.
It’s ourselves at our worst, but no one likes being played for a fool.
Some sterotypes of reverent Catholics is that they are stupid and led by the nose, that worrying about sinning and speaking ill of someone will make them back away and accept things at the surface, but Catholics aren’t stupid and they can think, they aren’t like Father’s FB followers, and they will stay united and not let one person hurt them if the center of their belief is Jesus.

difficult, she spoke to his doctor:
My dad was acting confused and hostile at one point and needed to take an early retirement. I called the doctor to ask what was wrong with my dad…he asked if my dad drank, yes, I said for 23 years of my life…the doctor replied that his brain was shrinking due to the drinking. That is all I know.
Such a change in behavior is not unusual.
It’s almost common for many former drinkers.

I’ve scanned/read thru the entire thread, and for what it’s worth, I’m leaning toward believing that SOLT’s statement is correct. I’m saddened, because Fr. Corapi’s teachings were part of what drew me to the Church in '04. However, I’m not letting this move me. This is not the first charismatic (small c) preacher to fall and disappoint me. Back in my Pentecostal days, I was a big fan if Jimmy Swaggart, until Feb 1988. I was also a regular viewer of the PTL channel, altho I did think Tammy Faye was over the top. These people come and go. Christ remains.
I don’t feel inclined to enter the debate, except to challenge Chipper’s comments about Corapi’s age and his toys. First, chronological age means no more that a poot in a hurricane. I am a year older that Corapi, and I can get on my bike (not a Harley, but a 27-speed Giant road bike), put in 21 miles, and bring it home in 90 minutes. Once I get into better shape, I’ll be closer to 75. And all Corapi’s toys (motorcycle, ATV, boat) are motorized. Age? Pfft.
Second, the SOLT statement refers only to his owning the toys, in violation to his promise of poverty. Nowhere does it say that he actually played with them. Lots of people own toys that they don’t play with.

Exactly and may we remember in the end to kiss the hands of the sinner that has teh ability to Consecrate the Eucharist even if it is only privately while saying the mass in private or with his brothers eventually.Although I agree with most of what you say, no priest is a ‘mere’ priest…they are the alter christus amongst us.
