I would certainly call yours an “extreme case.” I have known several who got annulments for much less serious situations. And they never had to go to Rome. And it didn’t take years!! Makes me wonder??? God Bless, Memaw
Hi Memaw,
Thanks, but be careful don’t shoot the messenger (even passive-aggressively) I assumed because our Priests reaction was so in contrast to the replies on here to my post that many would find it an interesting point, whether they agree with the Priest or not surely his take on the situation is worth considering? God bless 😉 Sophia xx

I’m not shooting the messenger but just stating facts. I have walked thru several annulments with 2 brothers, 2 friends and my second husband, so I have had a little experience… Your the one that has to make the final decision and I hope its the right one for you. God Bless, Memaw

What in the world was this priests so-called reply to your husband exposing an innocent party to a ton of nasty STIs?

I’m not being sarcastic…I’m genuinely curious to know.

I would never want to sleep with my husband again if I knew he had over 70 partners that I knew about (who knows what the real number actually is).

It’s a risk I would not be willing to take.

But, hey…it’s your marriage. If you want to take this road…go for it. We can’t tell you otherwise.

But if you find out you’ve contracted something fun like hepatitis or herpes (STIs you can never be rid of)…then, well, there you go.

I’m seriously disappointed. But, it’s your life…not ours.

I guess that is part of the “for better or worse” she agreed to. 🤷

Or AIDS

Very true. Of course my pastor would never agree that marriage vows included abuse.

Just a little note worth mentioning, our Priest expressed concern at the cry of ‘divorce him now’ that was advised a number of times in your replys, he reminds us that as Catholics there is no divorce, such a piece of paper from the courts is nothing more than a piece of paper. Divorced Catholics are still married until death parts them. He added that Annulment is almost impossible to receive and takes many months or even years of fierce debating and proving before it could even be considered by Rome. Annulment is only granted in extreme circumstances.
That’s not true. It does not take fierce debating and it isn’t almost impossible. And in my diocese it takes usually 7-12 mths and my former husband didn’t want to be involved and my annulment was still granted.

I’m seriously disappointed. .
I know, this is exactly why I wont tell my parents. They will insist that we separate. I know my decision to work on my marriage is frustrating and disappointing for you all to read. I’m sorry. I can see the great advice you have all given me for what it is brutal, honest and for most people it would be absolutely the advice to follow. BUT I feel my soul is more precious than my body, possessions and my pride. I will forsake all these gladly for a chance to build a real and lasting marriage and the chance to help both myself and my husband to please God. I wont defend his past behaviour, he has hurt more people than just me, but I will forgive him, stand by him, stay by his side (hopefully) until God calls us home.

I can hear the collective groan as I type and I do cringe at how frustrating I seem to you all. Sorry.

Almost sounds to good to be true!, God Bless, Memaw

STIs. You still haven’t answered my question. I work in the health care field. I’ve taken lots of patients that have hepatitis and AIDS.
A study in the US has stated that one third of all young people have an STI.

Are you going to get tested?

Are you going to hop right back into bed with him at the risk of your health?

Is he going to get tested for STIs? Are you going to go with him for every test to make sure he actually does it?

Will you sit and read the results together?

Is this even a concern of yours?

No one here wishes you ill. And I think your priest has given you some good advice, but I also don’t know if he recognizes the gravity of your situation with this man. I’m sorry that you have decided not to at least separate for a time. Frankly I would never be able to have sexual relations with such a person again, whether or not we ever received an annulment would be the least of my concerns at this point. I would never be able to trust my husband again. I think you are the type of person who is sacrificing herself on behalf of someone who cannot be trusted, but 🤷 there’s not much more any of us can say.

I was also tempted to say something about the priest’s advice, but will refrain.

There is such a thing as ‘grace of state’ which the Fathers talk about (not to be confused with a ‘state of grace’), basically, the idea that there is spiritual merit to be gained in following the advice of our spiritual director or pastor even if the advice itself is not objectively the best. Of course, this can never be an excuse to abdicate responsibility for our lives, but it is worth bearing in mind.

Note: Had to cut a lot out of this post as it’s over the max for one post.
In Fathers opinion, we both showed a keen willingness to make our marriage work despite the revelations of cheating, excessive use of pornography, possibility of a child to be born outside the marriage and my invasion of my husbands privacy (hacking into his emails, phone & facebook). He believes we do have a valid marriage and that my husband has shown his determination to change by staying faithful since our wedding day and resisting the opportunity to cheat in the flesh.
For starters, the part that I bolded is not an error on your part, when you are married those things are shared, you become like one in marriage and if you refused to do what you did by looking into his emails etc, you would still be naïve to the severity of the situation.

There is a good saying “those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing.”
Father did stress to my husband that the acts he performed over web-camera with other females during our marriage could be taken as infidelity by some and he said only God himself can decide whether the acts were committing adultery against his wife or the sin of wasting seed that should only be used for the divine purpose it is intended for. It is certainly one if not both.
I would say it’s infidelity because they exposed themselves intimately to one another. But yes, it would be hard to determine, if it’s not infidelity, it sure is close to it.
I did mention during the separate conversation with our Priest that I had told my story on here and he said he will read it. I mentioned many of the points and concerns raised by you all on here
Well, I’ll trust the priest, because ultimately he is the one with the first hand knowledge, we are all just going on second hand information.
and Father had an answer for each of them including ‘let he without sin cast the first stone’,
True. He also tells us “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

So yes, I would definitely agree, never throw stones, however if he cannot respect your sexuality or the sacredness of your union, than there is not point being in such a union.
he reminded me that we both took a holy oath on our wedding day and only God can separate us now. He reassured me that my husband was indeed contrite in his apology and he believes he really regrets his behaviour and he has already started to change and intends to make our marriage a long and happy one.
That’s good and yes, marriage is until death do you part (I don’t understand how the annulment process works), if he cannot change though, you would be better to remain single.
I know this update may be frustrating for so many of you that advised me to leave my husband and I know this is only the beginning of a huge journey and there will be many more struggles before we reach our destination but I have a heart full of hope and determination.
I am concerned that you will spend all of this effort on your marriage, that you will live married to him being naïve and in the end he will simply divorce you anyway and by that stage you will have probably brought your own children into the mix.

Sometimes it’s important to know when to cut our losses and run.
So THANK YOU for all your help and advice You made a huge difference for me when I needed you most. God bless you, Sophia xx
All the best, God bless you Sophia.

True. I’m glad he clarified this because Jesus is very clear on divorce in the Gospels, it’s a hard teaching, but it’s very clear none the less.

However remember, if he cannot change, you would be better to remain single.

Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
I can hear the collective groan as I type and I do cringe at how frustrating I seem to you all. Sorry.
It’s okay, it’s only frustrating because it feels as if you are making a big mistake. How bad would it have to get?

I know what the priest is saying when he say’s “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” but I wonder, would he say the same for those who are telling a woman who has been brutally beaten by her husband to leave him? How do women get in those situations where they stay with an abusive husband? Often they use the same excuses that they are sorry or that they were drunk or not thinking straight and that it will never happen again.

God Bless you, I hope you and the priest are making the right decision and I hope your marriage works.

Thank you for reading
Josh

It would be highly unusual for any person with Holy Orders to state anything other than believing your marriage is valid (barring, say, the subsequent revelation of a diriment impediment). You were married in a Catholic Church, and your marriage is presumed valid. Period. Whether a marriage is truly valid or not is left to a Tribunal.

Furthermore, you and your husband have gone to the Church to seek guidance, indicating you are willing to work things out. A priest is never going tell such a couple that their presumed valid marriage is invalid.

With regard to privacy, I have to disagree on that point. I will state it is my own personal opinion, though others disagree. When married, there is no privacy. My wife has all of my account usernames and passwords, and vice versa. Both of us trust each other, and neither of us have anything to hide. In situations where trust is an issue, I believe it is essential that each spouse has access to each others accounts. Trust between spouse is that most basic element of marriage, and it cannot be rebuilt while hiding things.

I’m not going to ever tell someone to get divorced or that they must do something. OTOH, I often will state assertively what I would do given a similar set of circumstances. Ultimately, in situations like this it is up to the couple on how the situation will be handled, not us.

It should also be noted that there are those in this thread that are highly sensitive to issues like yours, simply because they been through them personally, and discussions of such things tend to lead to emotional responses.

All true. But, there are SO many issues I think a Tribunal would have to consider in this very extreme case. One of many extreme issues:
…- he convinced the pregnant woman to ‘keep quiet’ until after our wedding telling her I have substantial savings and wouldn’t mind sharing the money with her and the baby…

All true. But, there are SO many issues I think a Tribunal would have to consider in this very extreme issue. One of many extreme issues:
I concur. I’ve received a decree of nullity and my situation was not this extreme. However, since the OP seems to want to work things out, I’m not going to harp on the issue.

Make an appointment with a marriage counsellor immediately. If he is unwilling to put effort into this problem and dealing with his sexual addictions, leave him.

Don’t seek advice from strangers, go to a professional.

OP: I’m kind of taken aback at your belief that we would recommend that you stay in a bad marriage.

I understand wanting to give people 2nd chances, but you also don’t want to be a doormat. I understand we are Catholics, but I have to wonder if this guy was ever really committed to you and the marriage, given what he did. I’m not looking at what this guy feels or says, but what has been the pattern of behavior.

Love can make you blind to a lot of things - which is good when it’s things like snoring or picking your nose. It’s not so good when he’s sleeping around and acting like a porn star with other women on the internet.

Honestly, I would probably try to save my marriage, but I’ve also been married a lot longer than you have.

It’s just the real, practical problems that will come from this situation that makes a lot of us urge you, OP, to run to the nearest exit.

What’s going to happen when you get pregnant and you want your husband at home with you and your kid(s), instead of running around with “baby mama” and her kid? Things change a lot when you have your own kids. Remember how Sarah treated Hagar after her own kid showed up?

This lady and her problems are going to be a permanent fixture in your life, if you want him to be the father you say you want him to be to the kid. Also, what happens if your husband doesn’t stop sleeping around? What happens if he does bring home a STD?

You are inviting a lot of trouble into a marriage that doesn’t need to be there.

It really sounds like your marriage is based on lies, but again, I’m going on what you said in your posts. I’m not actually in the relationship or know the guy.

Again, I could be just wrong and the guy could be committed to do the work he needs to do to save the marriage. However, based on what you’ve told us, I’m just not that convinced.

People lie to priests all the time. They say what they need to say to get what they want out of people. Look at what he did and said to you. “No, honey, the lady’s psycho and it’s not my kid.” Well, now you know differently right? People have good intentions, but have a hard time following through. I would just have a hard time trusting this guy.

Good luck.
