Did you give the Priest all the information you gave us in your first post, Sophia? Including the fact that on the evening before posting you felt an impulse to use a razor on yourself. That is so serious and you need to give all the information to any Priest or Professional you talk to from now on. There is a way of giving only snippets of a situation in order to only get the response you want to hear and your not doing yourself any favours.

From what you have said, to me this bloke sounds to have a severe disorder and if that is the case, responding and reacting to him as you would a normal person is useless to your goal of loving him back to normal. I’m not a professional (although I’ve spent 10 years involved with a Catholic ministry that is devoted to pre-marriage education and post marriage counselling) so I could not offer a diagnosis based on your comments, however, you need to be prepared with information that could help you weigh all your options down the track. You’ve only been married two months and the degree of lying and deception so far is frankly mind blowing. No normal man could be so cruel to a woman. Especially offering only excuses and no apologies to boot. My suggestion is to have a bit of a cursory scan of the phenomenon of pathological lying and anti social personalities. Hold the signs somewhere in your heart just in case you need to make a critical decision at some point. There is always hope that most of us who’ve read your original post with that gripping feeling of dread, may be wrong, but you need to at least be forewarned about the alternative.

Take care, be as honest with the Professionals you talk to as possible and God Bless.

I know, this is exactly why I wont tell my parents. They will insist that we separate. I know my decision to work on my marriage is frustrating and disappointing for you all to read. I’m sorry. I can see the great advice you have all given me for what it is brutal, honest and for most people it would be absolutely the advice to follow. BUT I feel my soul is more precious than my body, possessions and my pride. I will forsake all these gladly for a chance to build a real and lasting marriage and the chance to help both myself and my husband to please God. I wont defend his past behaviour, he has hurt more people than just me, but I will forgive him, stand by him, stay by his side (hopefully) until God calls us home.

I can hear the collective groan as I type and I do cringe at how frustrating I seem to you all. Sorry.
Well…yeah because I assume they care about you. Did you honestly tell the priest everything that you told us here? I just can’t fathom that a rational person would tell you to work on this marriage. And if he did, then I’m just going to say that the priest is completely wrong. He is, after all, a human being.

Your husband is a liar who put your health in danger and who cheated on you. Wake up and get out of this. It’s not your fault that you were deceived, but if you stay after having learned all of this, then you’re making a huge mistake. It’s not like he did one questionable thing that you guys could possibly work on. He actively deceived you for months. It takes a certain type of mental illness to do what you did to you. It honestly sounds like NPD. Everyone makes mistakes, but most people don’t have the capacity to do what he did to you, and that’s why you should get out immediately.

People lie to priests all the time. They say what they need to say to get what they want out of people. Look at what he did and said to you. “No, honey, the lady’s psycho and it’s not my kid.” Well, now you know differently right? People have good intentions, but have a hard time following through. I would just have a hard time trusting this guy.

Good luck.
This is another good point. You need to keep in mind that your husband is a master manipulator.

There are other people in the world with whom you could build a real and lasting marriage. Do you really want to throw away your life to someone who quite honestly sounds sociopathic? I hate to be this blunt, but you need to find more respect for yourself. You’re worthy of much more than this.

I am so sorry all of this has happened to you. Et makes a very good point.
This is not one mistake made once. This is repeated behavior. Over and over again.
Please, remove yourself from the situation at least temporarily and think on this.
Think on YOU, your health, your safety.Please.
And yes, priests can be wrong. Speak to another, in fact; be blatantly honest, go without husband, do not tell him of this. Husband lied to you. He could have downplayed his side of the story to the priest, who would then not give the appropriate response. Husband is cunning; it would follow that he was this way with the priest also. Please. I am imploring you to get away and think on this.
I will be praying for you.

Yes, Cheezy is probably right. I would be willing to bet that your husband lied, downplayed, and manipulated the priest, too.

I am also going to chime in on the annulment answer the priest gave, The Church has very clear and defined reasons for annulment. From my own research into my own annulment I can tell you that you definitely have grounds for annulment and one would likely be granted. Annulment takes approximately 8-14 months and does not have to go to Rome. Annulment is handled by a tribunal locally.

I admire your willingness to keep sacred vows. You made those vows and you meant them. However, your husband deceived you for months before the wedding and the deception only ended when you caught him. You made your vows under false pretenses. You did not know he had a mistress, a possible child on the way (the only one that you know of, but with his sexual history there could be more children out there that he fathered), that he was promiscuous or that he was a chronic liar and manipulator.

Please, take some more time alone to consider what you are doing to yourself and any children you may have in the future. Talk to another priest without your husband there and tell your whole story. Please.

Do you want to spend years acting like a detective and snooping for evidence every time your husband is late or goes out with friends?

Do you want to risk having a child with a man who knowingly married you when a different woman was pregnant with what could very well be his child? A truly decent man would have delayed marriage until he knew for sure and at the very least would have told you about the possibility of a child with another woman. And consider the child’s mother! If she really does have mental issues and if the child is your husbands then you will have this woman as a part of your life for at least the next 18 years. Consider how that will effect you and your own future children.

Do you want to remain married to someone who admitted to another person that he has financial gain in mind? The longer you are legally married the more claim he has to your money. Frankly, he could be lying and manipulating both you and your priest so that he can later divorce you and get more financially.

God bless you and may He help you through whatever path you choose.

Just a sad sad state of affairs…No pun intended!
After reading the many posts advocating you run from this marriage…I could have predicted that…human nature being what it is…you would end up staying with this deadbeat.

You see…despite the advice…and there is a lot that is just dripping in truth and the undeniable facts supporting this marriage to be invalid…you only need a crumb of hope to stay in it.

It will be your pride and your inability to see the truth that will lead you down the current road that you have elected to travel. It will be one of heartache, betrayal, lies, infidelity, mistrust, anger, hate, denial and shattered dreams.
The next mistake is usually adding a child to the mix…cause that will fix everything and he couldn’t possibly cheat on me now! Pffft

Life doesn’t have to be hard. We make certain choices that make it so.

Your pride has stopped you from confiding in the two people who love you more than life itself…your parents! WHY! Shame? Embarrassment? Heaven forbid you should be deceived and have made such a mistake. The wedding guests, work colleagues, the church…how embarrassing!
You have chosen the path that has the least amount of failure…for you!..Its his failure and not yours you have to deal with. You’re the Catholic hero and will fix him and he will always be the sinner…the least of the union. This will be the new relationship and interaction that your marriage will based on. It can no longer be…or ever be the happily ever after that you wanted.
That exists with someone else I’m afraid. But I guess you will never know.

The Priest I’m afraid is human and subject to getting it wrong. Sexual abuse within the church is an example of just how wrong they can get it!

Your choice…and always has been. God works through everyday people and you have brought a number into your life through this forum. Their posts are heart felt and with only your best interests in mind. These are life’s whispers. Listen to them.
Think of yourself in the third person and re read your initial post. What would your advice be?

Live in reality and truth.
This is YOUR choice, YOUR life and always has been. The only person you control is you. Require more of yourself and of others. You’re worth it!

It should also be noted that there are those in this thread that are highly sensitive to issues like yours, simply because they been through them personally, and discussions of such things tend to lead to emotional responses.
My second post I questioned myself after what SophiaCra said the priest had told her, but I wonder if even he or her have the full severity of the situation as this man is a master manipulator to have had that many sexual partners and keep it concealed from her before marriage and even after marriage.

Your situation spells disaster, it’s flashing neon lights SophiaCra.

Absolutely.

Like I said SophiaCra I am very concerned that you will spend all of this effort on your marriage, that you will live married to him being naïve and manipulated and in the end he will simply divorce you anyway and by that stage you will have probably brought your own children into this same mess because you refused to listen to the warning signs, It’s important to know when to cut our losses and run.

He lied to you and manipulated you before marriage and after marriage, what makes you think you have the full truth now? you only have what you have found out for yourself.
Thank you Josh
SophiaCra, you are surrounding yourself with people who are telling you what you want to hear but not what you need to hear, this is why you won’t tell your parents, because they will most likely tell you what you need to hear. Like others have been saying, this guy is a master manipulator, the priest didn’t know the history of this guy before marriage, what makes you think you/him know even the severity of the situation now? You need to deal with reality.

Like I said, How bad would it have to get? How bad or how many warning signs would it take before you would leave?

I know what the priest is saying when he say’s “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” but I wonder, would he say the same for those who are telling a woman who has been brutally beaten by her husband to leave him? How do women get in those situations where they stay with an abusive husband? Often they use the same excuses that they are sorry or that they were drunk or not thinking straight and that it will never happen again.
Matthew 5:27-30
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Matthew 5:31-32
31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Matthew 7:6
6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Anyway I implore you to view these, if you still feel the same way afterwards, than so be it.

I am so distressed by the thought of how its all going to get worse when the child is born that last night I found myself in the bathroom with a razor. A thought I would have found abhorrent before I got married! Its all such a horrible mess I just want to go to sleep forever.
SophiaCra, this is flashing neon lights, you need to get out of this destructive relationship, it will only get worse, at least leave him until he can fix himself up and whatever you do, please I implore you, don’t bring your own kids into this mess, please don’t even think about having your own kids together it will not help this situation one bit, it will make it 100 times worse when kids are involved.

God Bless

Thank you for reading

Sorry.
I am sure that I speak for many, if not all, of the other people who replied when I say that if we give a collective “groan” it is only because we care what happens to you. As I said before, many of us are praying for you, and will continue to do so. Of course your soul is more precious than your body and your possessions. It is a duty laid upon you, and therefore necessary to the salvation of your soul, to take proper care of your body and your possessions, and your future children, if any. Is union with this man a proper way to take care of that which God has entrusted to you?

Of course we Catholics do not recognize divorce in the same way that the secular world does. A valid marriage cannot be dissolved by a piece of paper. However, if there were a serious impediment to the marriage, a legal divorce or simple separation is a necessary first step to sorting out the annulment. Please remember that an annulment is the statement that there never was a valid marriage, in spite of some appearances. The fornication and the pregnant girlfriend alone would have been impediments which would have needed consideration, but the vast deception was of a level that would seem to render the man incapable of making a valid promise. What does truth mean to him?

If all that you have told us here is accurate, and it is also the case that the priest “did not pick up on any of this during your pre-marital counseling” than there is a very troubling lack of awareness on his part. Either the priest is sublimely oblivious, and therefore is not fit for the role of marriage counselor, or the man of whom you have spoken is really incredibly good at lying and pretending, in which case this priest is not up to the unusual challenges presented by this man.

This is exactly why you should tell your parents. They love you, care about your well-being, and want the best for you. In any case, why deprive yourself of the advice of your parents? Their disappointment would be with your husband, anyway, and since you’re legally an adult, they can’t force you to do anything you don’t want to do.

All in all this whole situation sounds like a case of “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Your husband fooled both you and the Priest the first time around. Neither of you had any idea what this guy was really like. From what you’ve written here, this guy is not behaving like a typical guy and these are not typical marriage problems. Whatever is going on, you aren’t going to have a real and lasting marriage without your husband putting a lot of effort into it. And nothing you’ve said about him makes him sound like he’s capable of any sort of marriage.

I’d suggest you pray about this and at least separate and see if he’s actually sorry. At the very least, see if his behavior actually changes. That’s not divorce, it’s prudence.

Just a little note worth mentioning, our Priest expressed concern at the cry of ‘divorce him now’ that was advised a number of times in your replys, he reminds us that as Catholics there is no divorce, such a piece of paper from the courts is nothing more than a piece of paper. Divorced Catholics are still married until death parts them. He added that Annulment is almost impossible to receive and takes many months or even years of fierce debating and proving before it could even be considered by Rome. Annulment is only granted in extreme circumstances.
It is annulment people here are advocating, not divorce per se. If he commits adultery after the marriage, you could consider separation/divorce (a different issue here). But for the lies and unfaithfulness before the marriage, it is annulment that should be considered.

Your husband withheld relevant facts from you that may have changed your willingness to enter this marriage. Your ability to have properly consented to this marriage is questionnable. It is not our place to say that your marriage is invalid, but there seems to be many people in agreement here that the chances of a tribunal ruling against an annulment would be almost inconceivable (noting that your priest has another view).

As others have drawn attention to, these are relevant to this possibility:
  • he cheated with at least 8 women in the 10 months we were dating, 3 of them were sustained affairs lasting upto 2 months each the rest were one-night-stands

  • he convinced the pregnant woman to ‘keep quiet’ until after our wedding telling her I have substantial savings and wouldn’t mind sharing the money with her and the baby
The second factor here essentially amounts to fraud. Lying for material gain (on behalf of his child). This is potentially a criminal matter as well as an issue regarding the validity of your marriage.

Anyway, I just wanted to make it clear what is being discussed. You seem to have made up your mind about working on the marriage and we certainly wish you the best with that, and will pray for you.

If the priest has all of the information that we have here and he’s still telling you to work on this marriage, then I think it’s time to consult someone else. I’m sorry, but cheating with 8 other people, lying about a child, and telling someone that she could use your money are all sociopathic behaviors, and I question anyone who tells you to stay in this situation.

So what that an annulment might take months? Is it better to, you know, throw away your whole life? As I’ve said before, the fact that this man had the capacity to do this in the first place is the most glaring sign of all. These are not things that a mentally sound person would person would do. Separate from your husband and start the paperwork.

I also agree with the above poster who said that you are surrounding yourself with people who will tell you what you want to hear. Tell your parents and let them start to put some sense into you. Talk with some other priests, if that’s the route you want to take. I would also suggest a counselor or psychiatrist. At this point, it sounds like you need help with accepting that it’s okay to leave and get the annulment, and that’s where a counselor can come into play.

We don’t personally know you here, but on a human level, we do care. No one wants to see you be abused, lied to, and manipulated by this man. It’s frustrating that you’re seemingly only getting real life (name removed by moderator)ut from a few people who keep nudging you in the direction that you want to go, not the direction that you should go.

…and many years from now, as you lie broken and crying in your bed…would you be willing to give all the days…from this day to that!..for one chance!..JUST ONE CHANCE!!!..To come back here!..thank the forum posters and tell this spouse…that you’ll never take his lies…and he will NEVER take…YOUR FREEDOM!!!

Come on…it’s time you said “when” and kick him to the kerb!👍

RSD, I am safe and I do not feel any physical threat from my husband. I have never seen him act violently or aggressively, the worst he has done is raise his voice to me. I will of course bear your concern in mind. I promise to update you when we speak to our Priest on Friday. When we talked he just cried and said nice things, he didn’t shout or get angry.
This is another good point. You need to keep in mind that your husband is a master manipulator.
This. The definition of Narcissistic personality disorder:.

Please do not be charmed by him, or feel special from the attention. I urge you to seek help.

God bless you,

Your first decision to marry this guy was made, based on deception…HIS!

The next decision you make about this relationship is yours…and you make it with your eye’s wide open.

This decision, you are absolutely accountable for!

Please weigh it carefully. 😦

Absolutely.

Yes, thank you I already feel like the most stupid woman on the planet. Virtually all of his cheating occurred on evening when he told me he was at football training and then ‘going for a few pints with the lads’. He was actually meeting women he had met on dating sites or in nightclubs. We both lived with our parents before our wedding day and would text me to say goodnight every night without fail, I assumed he was tucked up in bed just as his texts had said.
Of course I NOW realise I was ridiculously trusting to the point of being stupid
Imagine how stupid you will feel when he ends the marriage himself and you knowingly staying with him? There is no shame in living a lie until you learn the truth.

Look, 2 months you are into marriage, only 2 months. I have never even heard of a situation as extreme as yours. People have tried to work on their broken marriages with ALOT!! less than this and their marriage has still failed, why on earth do you think this one will work?

Learn from this and move on with your life.

Remember, the worst thing you could do now is try and have your own children together and bring them into this mess, what ever happens, DON’T try to have kids together while you are in this situation, because having your own kids together with the relationship like it is will make the situation 100 times worse.

It’s what DL82 said -

It’s not like you have come to a secular place and people are just dismissively saying ‘ah, don’t worry, get a divorce, 2nd, 3rd, 4th … 84th time lucky!’ You have come to a forum where most people are Catholics of a more-or-less conservative and traditional kind, the kind of folks who believe that marriage (real, valid, sacramental marriage) is for life, and still the message seems to be the same from everyone.

It’s like HandyAndy said -

The decision to marry this guy was based on HIS deception and manipulation of you.

The decision to remain in this marriage is YOURS, all yours and you are doing it with eye’s wide open. This decision you are absolutely accountable for. SO make damn sure you get it right, because you cannot re-do it.

Should you forgive your husband? Yes, but as Christ say’s “6 Don’t give to dogs what belongs to God. They will only turn and attack you. Don’t throw pearls down in front of pigs. They will trample all over them.”

To give to dogs what belongs to God and throw down pearls in front of pigs isn’t love, mercy, forgiveness, compassion or Christ like. It’s irresponsible.

Your in a unique position SophiaCra, it’s a miracle that his unfaithfulness is so extreme that you could not remain blind to it even if you tried, that it’s only been 2 months into marriage and you have not mothered any children with him yet. The signs have been made abundantly clear, not many people get signs as clear as yours. But us posters can only lead a horse to water, we can’t make it drink.

God Bless You SophiaCra, I wish you all the best and hope you make the right decision.

RED FLAG! RED FLAG! RED FLAG!

You are seriously going to hide the circumstances of your marriage from your parents? When things are this serious? You are in delusion! You need help! You should be running to your parents for their love and support. You have made a terrible mistake but it can, at this point, be reversed with fewer consequences. The longer you stay with this man, the deeper into the mess you will get. Does it not alarm you that he told another woman that you have substantial savings and will support her child with him? That alone should give you enough reason to separate if not immediately file for divorce.

I’m sorry that you can’t see what we can. Many of us have come into contact with someone like your husband and have experienced consequences from that contact. We’d like to prevent others from being burned, but in your case, you’re on the top floor of the burning building and you’ve just closed the window and walked away from the ladder.

Seems we’ve seen the last of Sophia. I truly have my doubts about the whole story. I had a sister-in-law that could tell stories like you wouldn’t believe.(actually if you didn’t know her, you might believe them.) And she could make them up sooo fast it was actually entertaining.( she is entertaining the Angels now). My Uncle told her she should be a fiction writer. God Bless, Memaw

There could be doubts, truly. To err on the side of caution, let’s spend time in prayer for her, that she is safe.
