2009 Saginaw Catholic Men’s Conference
The Father’s Love in the Midst of Suffering

Fellow Bloggers,

Last year at this time I posted, telling you all about the upcoming Catholic Men’s Conference of the Saginaw Diocese. If you were there last year, you joined with 500 men from around the Diocese in a fantastic and rewarding time of prayer and fellowship.

Save the Date!! On March 28 the 2009 Conference will be held.

Check out my post at forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=305534. Or better yet, hop over to our new website at www.thecatholicmen.net. Read about the speakers we are having this year and order your tickets. Besides a inspiring and reverent Mass with Bishop Carlson, we serve up coffee, donuts, lunch, talks by Fr. Phillip Chavez SOLT, Ed & Eddie Reinhardt, Doug Barry, and Deacon David Jenuwine. Hey, and you get it all for only $15.

Save the date now! Please consider coming to Nouvel in Saginaw. I promise you a reverent, spiritual, and enjoyable time with many new and old friends. Bring a buddy, your father, brothers, sons, uncles, and grandpas. Get your tickets early, so our food order is sufficient.

I look forward to being with you on March 28.

Questions?? – Blog me or send an email to TheCatholicMenSaginaw@gmail.com

THE MEN’S CONFERENCE on March 28th, WILL BE POWERFUL! WHAT A BLESSING.

IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT SOME PRIESTS IN THE DIOCESE WILL BE OFFERING GENERAL ABSOLUTION TO THEIR FAITHFUL.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation was designed to heal, it is cathartic. Bishop Carlson has spoken/written often about this. I do not understand how some priests, take it about themselves, to blatantly go against the teaching of the church by offering General Absolution in situations that do not warrant it.

My concern is for the faith community, they are being cheated. It is arrogant, irresponsible, directly goes against the WILL of GOD. People are bound by their sins, their despair, their darkness. A general “you are ok and forgiven” doesn’t reach the depths of the intention OF LOVE inherent to this SACRAMENT. The implications to do less than what the Sacrament was intended for is far reaching. I say to these priest: are you sure???, have you given them the fullness of the Sacrament. WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT, these are people’s lives. You are minimizing the GIFT.

I would say to priests that take it upon themselves to DECIDE to offer this General Absolution: You are selfish, you are self centered, YOU decide more than The Bishop, the Pope, Jesus himself. You are not obedient.

What about the GRACE???

Lisa

Has anyone here been to the previous Saginaw mens’ conferences? From their website, it sounds like it might be a Charismatic conference in disguise.

I have an uncle living in Gagetown who is interested in going, but he would not go if it is actually a Charismatic conference.

Lepanto,

Per your question…

I have acted as publicity coordinator for last couple years on the conference. No, this is not a Charismatic Renewal conference. Though you will find those brothers in attendance…along with KofC, Serrans, priests, the new seminarians, the Bishop, and many other average Joe’s from across the Diocese.

The website at www.thecatholicmen.net is legit. I also suggest you read the blog which is being posted to each week from the conference director thecatholicmen.blogspot.com/

This is about the Holy Spirit – who is fostering the emergence of small men’s prayer groups in many of our parishes. Bishop Carlson and the Diocese are the key supporters. The men from these prayer groups are just the hands and feet to get the conference launched. Check out the speakers this year – good guys, great stories. For many of us, it is the Mass that is something not to be missed. Last year was pretty cool. Check out the conference website for pics and quotes from last year.

Your uncle would not be disappointed. And I predict he will come away very happy he attended and likely be looking forward to the next conference. If not, I’ll personally refund his 15 bucks.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for the clarification. I will forward your description on to my uncle. If he goes to the event, with his permission I will post some of his comments here about his experience.

Greetings all. I heard a rumor I would like to know if any one else has caught wind of. I heard the Religous Sisters of Mercy out of Alma are either relocating or expanding into the former Daughters of Charity convent of the grounds of St. Mary’s Hospital and will be working in that hospital ministry. Has anyone else heard this? Great news if it is true.

The upper story of the former Daughters of Charity is indeed being remodeled for three-to-four Sisters of Mercy to occupy. They are coming chiefly to work at the hospital. I’m hoping we will be seeing them often at Sunday and daily masses, as well as other Cathedral celebrations and liturgies.

That is wonderful! Deo gratias!

This sounds like a wonderful development.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Saginaw. Where is the former Daughters of Charity convent? Is it currently vacant? When did the DoC pull out?

The convent is behind St Mary’s Hospital campus and about two blocks away from the Cathedral. I believe it is currently vacant. I am assuming the Daughters just didn’t have the numbers to continue staffing ministries in Saginaw.

Thought I had responded to this Fri, but a return to the forum on Sat. revealed the absence of the post I thought I had made.

Must apologize for perpetuating some mis-information by not paying attention to what I was repeating in my former post.

The building that is being remodeled is the former convent of the Dominican Sisters that taught at the school from 1907-1982. That convent was on the east side of the school and rectory, all adjacent to one another, rectory, school, convent, and all in the same block along Hoyt Street. It is the upstairs that is being remodeled. The downstairs along with the St Dominic Chapel were remodeled 2007-2008. The parish/cluster offices are there.

Thank you for the info.

Time to start praying for a good Bishop to be assigned … Bishop Carlson is on his way to St Louis.

I guess the Pope also recognized how good he is and how many great changes for the positive he has made in Saginaw.

He, and Bishops Boyea and Vigneron would have been a blessed and holy trinity of bishops in this area.

American Papist has some info too… americanpapist.com/blog.html

.

Bishop Carlson’s promotion, while much deserved for all his hard work here in the diocese of Saginaw, seems premature, and will produce a bittersweet taste in the mouths of all the faithful who were pinning their hopes for a life-giving renewal on that good bishop.

Here at the Cathedral, all I can say is, Hey…we got a new roof!

Please pray for the diocese of Saginaw.

Hey…at least you got a roof…Holy Name in Chicago has had issues with theirs for two years now.

In all honesty, this isn’t much of a surprise is it? Something about a bishop going from South Dakota to Michigan never gave me much a sense that he would be around for long.

I feel bad we’re losing him, but good for St. Louis that they’re getting a good bishop.

At any rate, start praying up a storm for Bishop Carlson, and for us that we get a holy and humble bishop who supports church doctrine and dogma.

Hey…at least you got a roof…
Yes…a roof and a whole lot more. It has been a great joy the last few years watching God work through Bishop Carlson. Fr. Groeschel of EWTN fame identified Bishop Carlson as one of the finest of all the US Bishops, and I can attest to that. We all kinda surmised that we would only have him a short while way back in 2005 (way back…hmmm), and were caught completely off guard by the assignment of such a high-caliber servant of God to the lowly diocese of Saginaw.

A great blessing is on it’s way to the diocese of St. Louis, we wish them the very best. For Saginaw, well, our hope is in the Lord, He will provide, but like St Augustine said, “Pray as if it all depends on God, and work as if it all depends on you”, and so we have much work to do, many prayers to pray, and many petitions to offer up to Our Lady.

God is good. His mercy endureth forever!

I am broken hearted and afraid. The Bishop’s work here has only just
begun…what will become of us? Pray for our parishers, priests
and people. I feel abandoned after four years of “hope.” Pray hard that
a good and holy Bishop will be assigned to us and finish what our
good Bishop Carlton started. We must never go back to what it was
like before.😦

Don’t lament, Saginaw! I have all hope that His Holiness Pope Benedict will not allow you to fall into spiritual ruin; whether you felt that way prior to Carlson or not. I’m praying that the Holy Father appoints a good, solid, holy bishop to replace Bishop Carlson who can bring his good work in Saginaw to fruitation and fulfillment.

Pray daily for all priests and bishops, archbishops and cardinals, that they can be true witnesses to God’s everlasting and Ever-abounding love and faithfulness, and pray that they will continue to uphold the truths and teachings of Holy Mother Church as the Successors of Peter have entrusted her to us.

We must never go back to what it was
like before.😦
That is my greatest fear. 😦

Can all the reformation (and I use that word in a good sense) done in the past four years continue in his absence?

And will it continue when a new bishop comes?
