Nike takes sides, tapping Colin Kaepernick for new 'Just Do It' ad

People are already threatening boycotts and burning of Nike apparel. We shall see. It is clearly a political statement by Nike, as the safe money move would be to use the other athletes listed and fill in other slots with milquetoast replacements. Not sure why they would other than political leanings of ownership, but it is their company. I suspect it will backfire, but we shall see.

Even if I object to something, I don’t have the time or energy for burnings. Just don’t buy it. Nike doesn’t care if you burn their merchandise AFTER you gave them your money.

One athlete already started a campaign to ask people to donate their Nike apparel to certain worthy causes rather than outright burn the stuff.

People were burning and blowing up their Yeti coolers.

1. Buy Yeti cooler, and give Yeti $500.
2. Burn Yeti cooler.
3. Now you’re out $500, and your beer is warm.

If they’re doing that they could be looking at going to jail. The officers of publicly held companies have a legal duty to try to make money for their shareholders, not to lose shareholder money to advance a political agenda.

Stock prices fluctuate. I wouldn’t take a snapshot of today and extrapolate a trend from it. Over periods of time much longer than 24 hours they are doing fine.

I know nothing about Nike, or the stock market. Hard to imagine they lost that much just because of one endorsement, but I guess anything is possible. What do I know?

emotional selling can readily case a dip, as could institutional sellers trying to get out before it does become an actual issue.

If you google the stock, you see it dropped $3 over the weekend but is now stable at $2 down since last week.

In case you didn’t get the point of the ad, it was that you should stand for what you believe in.

Kaepernick opposes the disproportionate use of police violence against people of color. This is, unfortunately, a controversial position to take in this country.

I don’t really follow football, so I don’t know how good or not good he was. I know he put his pro career at risk, and he doesn’t have it anymore.

Given the level of commitment required to become a pro athlete, and the amount of hard work over years and years, I doubt that he thinks it ended well for him.

He was a good player. Not great, but good. He had no assurance when he did this action would be accepted by Nike. It is nice to his his courage rewarded, however I think he would rather be playing football than just selling endorsements.

ANY job that pays your bills is no small thing to risk. Mr. Kaepernick chose to be an unrestricted free agent rather than be let go and thought his talent was good enough that he could just pick up another quarter-back position. He found out that either he wasn’t as good as he thought he was or that he was dragging too much baggage with him and no team was actively looking for a giant problem. I’ve never once seen an add where the employer was seeking an employee that had all the qualifications with the stipulation that the MORE problems, trouble and baggage they had, the better chance of being hired.

Mr. Kaepernick could have found 1,000 other ways to draw attention to the belief that police are more unfair and brutal to People of Color. His choosing to do it while he was wearing the uniform of his employer, at his place of employment and while he was on the job was, perhaps, not the wisest addition to a resume’.

Now to have his face with the words of him having sacrificed everything…

I never liked or bought Nike to begin with. I consider them a marketing company that has a product line of shoes. I don’t object to Kaepernick kneeling because I oppose flag idolatry before events. But I do object to his racist reason for doing so.
