Nike takes sides, tapping Colin Kaepernick for new 'Just Do It' ad

People are already threatening boycotts and burning of Nike apparel. We shall see. It is clearly a political statement by Nike, as the safe money move would be to use the other athletes listed and fill in other slots with milquetoast replacements. Not sure why they would other than political leanings of ownership, but it is their company. I suspect it will backfire, but we shall see.

Even if I object to something, I don’t have the time or energy for burnings. Just don’t buy it. Nike doesn’t care if you burn their merchandise AFTER you gave them your money.

One athlete already started a campaign to ask people to donate their Nike apparel to certain worthy causes rather than outright burn the stuff.

I know – this happened when the makers of Yeti coolers apparently did something that angered the NRA.

People were burning and blowing up their Yeti coolers.

So it went like this:
  1. Buy Yeti cooler, and give Yeti $500.
  2. Burn Yeti cooler.
  3. Now you’re out $500, and your beer is warm.
Winning!

If they’re doing that they could be looking at going to jail. The officers of publicly held companies have a legal duty to try to make money for their shareholders, not to lose shareholder money to advance a political agenda.
“Since the Supreme Court’s ruling in *[Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission in 2010, upholding the rights of corporations to make political expenditures under the First Amendment, there have been several calls for a Constitutional amendment to abolish corporate personhood.”

They already lost $3.75B in market value on the news. It may be a blip, or it may not…
Stock prices fluctuate. I wouldn’t take a snapshot of today and extrapolate a trend from it. Over periods of time much longer than 24 hours they are doing fine.

I have to say it’s hilarious to see people invoking Tillman as some sort of rebuke of Kaerpernick knowing Tillman would be 100% on Kaepernick’s side.

I know nothing about Nike, or the stock market. Hard to imagine they lost that much just because of one endorsement, but I guess anything is possible. What do I know?
emotional selling can readily case a dip, as could institutional sellers trying to get out before it does become an actual issue.

If you google the stock, you see it dropped $3 over the weekend but is now stable at $2 down since last week.

"Believe in something,
Even if it means sacrificing everything."

Really Mr. Kaepernick, you’ve sacrificed EVERYTHING?

-You’ve sacrificed your health by donating both kidneys to help others and will go on dialysis?
-You’ve sacrificed all your money to help the poor?
-You are sacrificing your lawsuit and not going to go ahead and sue the NFL?

No Mr. Kaepernick, you have NOT sacrificed EVERYTHING, not even close.

Disgusting IMO.One of his apparel lines will include a t shirt stating" don’t be afraid to stand for something,no matter the cost"
What the heck is that supposed to mean?
May as well have said "Stand for anything,no matter the cost.
Jesus stood for something, no matter the cost.
Peter stood for something, no matter the cost.
Martin Luther King Jr. stood for something, no matter the cost.
Maximilian Kolbe stood for something, no matter the cost.
not a disgusting thing to do. Something to admire.

Kaepernick didn’t sacrifice everything, it’s true, but, whether or not you agree with his position, you’ve gotta agree that an NFL career is no small thing to risk.

And if you think there is an actual cost,
just sue for compensation because they disagreed.

It’s an inane statement Stand for something? Stand for what ?Taking a knee during the anthem. What cost? What sacrifice did CK make? Nike would have done better to choose any number of courageous individuals other than this guy.

And now we can add Colin Kaepernick to this illustrious group. In fact, he may exceed them, to my knowledge he hasn’t denied Christ 3 times, and Christ wouldn’t have a clue what to do with a football.

In case you didn’t get the point of the ad, it was that you should stand for what you believe in.

Unemployment.

Maybe they are “standing for something” too, just by running this ad, in which case I think they did very well.

He was a rather mediocre player form what I’ve heard. He has snagged a pretty lucrative gig with Nike .So for CK all swell that ends well

I don’t really follow football, so I don’t know how good or not good he was. I know he put his pro career at risk, and he doesn’t have it anymore.

Given the level of commitment required to become a pro athlete, and the amount of hard work over years and years, I doubt that he thinks it ended well for him.

He was a good player. Not great, but good. He had no assurance when he did this action would be accepted by Nike. It is nice to his his courage rewarded, however I think he would rather be playing football than just selling endorsements.

ANY job that pays your bills is no small thing to risk. Mr. Kaepernick chose to be an unrestricted free agent rather than be let go and thought his talent was good enough that he could just pick up another quarter-back position. He found out that either he wasn’t as good as he thought he was or that he was dragging too much baggage with him and no team was actively looking for a giant problem. I’ve never once seen an add where the employer was seeking an employee that had all the qualifications with the stipulation that the MORE problems, trouble and baggage they had, the better chance of being hired.

Mr. Kaepernick could have found 1,000 other ways to draw attention to the belief that police are more unfair and brutal to People of Color. His choosing to do it while he was wearing the uniform of his employer, at his place of employment and while he was on the job was, perhaps, not the wisest addition to a resume’.

Now to have his face with the words of him having sacrificed everything:roll_eyes:

I never liked or bought Nike to begin with. I consider them a marketing company that has a product line of shoes. I don’t object to Kaepernick kneeling because I oppose flag idolatry before events. But I do object to his racist reason for doing so.

Got to hand it to Kaep, he sure knows how to drive a certain segment crazy!
