Do you really want to quote pharisees on that? Not only did you quote half a verse, but you forgot one.
Mark 2:7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

Amen, and this is always what the Catholic Church has taught. What you misunderstand from scripture which states:Mark 2:7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
Rev.21:3
I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, **"Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people 4 and God himself will always be with them (as their God). **
The fundamental misunderstanding here between Catholics and protestants is that the Catholic Church is the mystical body of Jesus Christ, she is never a building or a protestant view of belonging to man.
The other misunderstanding here is the sacraments instituted by Jesus Christ which are visible signs instituted by Jesus Christ to part grace upon the believer. It is here when the finger of God touches our humanity.
If one is relating the Catholic Church built upon Rock by Jesus Christ to men is greatly mistaken here.
Addressing the Popes or the magisterium in the body of Jesus Christ reveals a great misunderstanding of what the bible teaches the Catholic church is the body of Jesus Christ. Saul who was persecuting the Church, was asked by Jesus; "Saul, why do you persecute me?
Do not run from what these successors from the apostles have revealed, what they reveal from the apostles about the Catholic Church deals with the mystical body of Jesus Christ living on earth and in heaven.
These revelations should not put fear into our hearts, but to wake us up to the spiritual realities that Jesus has revealed to his Catholic Church.
Let us lay down our pride, and listen or learn what these great mystics teach what was handed down to them from the apostles.
If you bring a 16th -21st century protestant protest to these ancient apostolic successors to the apostles, then you look but cannot see, listen but cannot hear and remain in a carnal understanding to the scriptures and revelations of Jesus Christ.
Attacking what God has built upon Peter and his Catholic Church, such as the disciplines of the popes and the magisterium in his Kingdom, does not at all address what the Catholic Church is in the body of Jesus Christ to which the Early Church Fathers teach. One is just swinging into the air…
We have here misunderstanding from babes on milk, from those who have tasted the Lord from the meat of the Gospels, to those who refute what they don’t understand in the infallible Word and promises of Jesus Christ placed upon his own body the Catholic Church.
Peace be with you and leave with this scripture;
1Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him,” 10 this God has revealed to us through the Spirit**.For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. 11 Among human beings, who knows what pertains to a person except the spirit of the person that is within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms. 7 14 Now the natural person 8 does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually. 15 The spiritual person, however, can judge everything but is not subject to judgment 9 by anyone. 16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?” But we have the mind of Christ. **
QUOTE=Robbinson;7006760]Indeed - simple and clear statement. I agree.
As to the early Church fathers quoted by Gabriel, this is certainly evidence of how these great and sincere minds understood “salvation through the Church” . However, these were not infallible teachings of the Church and the Catechism of the Catholic Church asserts the doctrinal position (salvation through the Church) but with a broader application of what that means. Ultimately, Thomas hit the nail on the head - The Church is the fullest expression of the faith and our best means of salvation. The rest is up to God who will be the judge of our hearts, and the level of revelation to which we are accountable.
Blessings,
I believe the Early Church Fathers faith is what separates the men from the boys. The Catechism of the Catholic Church never conflicts with these teachings of the Early Church Fathers, but give clarity and definition to a people of understanding in our day. The Catholic Church is Rock, She does not change from what Jesus Christ has revealed to Her.Brian
We know that the Apostles were not perfect. How can a man (pope) be Christ’s representative and forgive sins when he isn’t perfect as Christ was (on earth) and still is today? How can one get such a statement incorrect when he is the highest authority in the church? That is not only unscriptural but dangerous to ones salvation. These things should be cleared using the Bible, because we now see that when anything else is used it can be very misleading and wrong.

Christ First,
Yes, indeed Christ is First, But if you want to put Christ First in to your life then you must follow His teaching about His One and Only Church. And this is the First thing to do to follow Christ… Now did Jesus Christ leave the Bible to Guide us or His Church to guide us?
Christ First, Jesus Christ did not say: "And I say to thee: “That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my “BIBLE” and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” No! Jesus Christ did not say the Bible will guide us.
Here is the Correct bible verse: Matthew 16: 18-20 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock** I will build my church**, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven. 20 Then he commanded his disciples, that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.
Christ First, it is the Church you must adhere to and obey. The Bible is good under the Guidance, I repeat, under the Guidance of the Catholic Church and no other.
Matthew 28: 19-20 Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.
Christ First, Matthew 28: 19-20 the above bible verse, did Jesus tell the Bible or His Disciples to teach and baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit? It was the Disciples who were to teach and baptize all nation Not The Bible.
The New Testament was Compiled by the early Church Fathers who were Catholic for the Catholic Faithful and for those to become Catholic, and not for Protestants, Why? Well, it is only obvious that this Man made protestant church did not exist until 1500 years later. This being the Truth and can be backed up by Facts my point is if you want the Correct teaching of the Bible you must learn it from the the One and Only Church Jesus Christ established over 2000 years ago,not from a church that started 1500 years later or a church that started a week ago
Christ First, when did your church “Christ is the Only Way religion” start?.. Mine, started over 2000 years ago with a promise that the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.Therefore, what the Catholic Church Teaches about the Bible is the One and only Correct One! Amen.

You’re correct, I didn’t specify. It’s a very long discussion.Hello Newbie, you have not made it clear from your post of who and what the Catholic “universal” church is? Does your understanding of the Catholic Church agree with these particular Eastern and Western Catholic saints? Who all by the way in full communion with the Popes, many went to their martyrdom proclaiming this Catholic Faith. Does your “Catholic” definition or understanding agree with these Catholic Saints and martyrs?
St. Ignatius of Antioch “letter to the Smyrnaeans” chapt 8
(Shun schisms, as the source of troubles.) Let all follow the bishop as Jesus Christ did the Father, and the priests, as you would the Apostles. Reverence the deacons as you would the command of God. Apart from the bishop, let no one perform any of the functions that pertain to the Church… Wherever the bishop appears, there let the people be; as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church…
St. Irenaeus "against heresies bk. 3 chapt.24
But is has on the other hand been shown that the preaching of the Church is everywhere consistent, and continues in an even course, and receives testimony from the prophets, the apostles, and all the disciples… and that well grounded system which tends to man’s salvation, namely, our faith; which, having been received from the Church… For in the Church, God as set apostles, prophets, teachers (1cor.12:28) and all the other means through which the Spirit works;…. For where the Church is, there is the Spirit of God; and where the Spirit of God, there is the Church, and every kind of grace; but the Spirit is Truth.
St. Cyprian “on unity of the Catholic Church, chapt. 6”
The spouse of Christ cannot be defiled; she is uncorrupted and chaste…Who ever is separated from the Church and is joined with an adulteress is separated from the promises of the Church, nor will he who has abandoned the Church arrive at the rewards of Christ. He is a stranger; he is profane; he is an enemy.** He cannot have God as a father who does not have the Church as mother.** If whoever was outside the ark of Noe was able to escape, he too who is outside the Church escapes…He who breaks the peace and concord of Christ acts against Christ; he who gathers somewhere outside the Church scatters the Church of Christ…Does anyone believe that this unity which comes from the divine strength, which is closely connected with the divine sacraments, can be broken asunder in the Church and be separated by the divisions of colliding wills? He who does not hold to this unity, does not hold the law of God, does not hold the faith of the Father and the Son, does not hold life and salvation.
Lactantius “Divine institutes, bk 4. Chapt 30”
**Therefore it is the Catholic Church alone which retains true worship. This is the fountain of truth, this is the abode of faith, this is the temple of God; into which if any one shall not enter, or from which if any shall go out, he is estranged from the hope of life and eternal salvation…**But, however, because all the separate assemblies of heretics call themselves Christians in preference to others, and think that theirs is the Catholic Church, it must be known that the true Catholic Church is that in which there is confession and repentance, which treates in a wholesome manner the sins and wounds to which the weakness of flesh is liable.
St. Jerome “letters, No. 15”
(To Damasus, 374-379) As I follow no leader save Christ, so I communicate with none but your blessedness, that is with the chair of Peter.** For this , I know, is the rock on which the Church is built! This is the house where alone the paschal lamb can be rightly eaten. This is the ark of Noah, and he who is not found in it shall perish when the flood prevails**.
St. Fulgentius “On faith, to Peter Chapt 3”
… without the sacrament of baptism- apart from those who without baptism in the Catholic Church shed their blood for Christ- no one can receive the Kingdom of God or eternal life. Either in the Catholic Church or any old heresy or schism one can receive the sacrament of baptism in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and he receives the entire sacrament.** But he will not have salvation, which is the strength of the sacrament, if he has that sacrament outside the Catholic Church. So therefore he must return to the Church, not to receive the sacrament of baptism again…but in order that he may receive life eternal in a Catholic society, which no one can attain, who with the sacrament of baptism remains a stranger to the Catholic Church…**
(Chapt. 37)Firmly hold and never doubt that every baptized person outside of the Catholic Church cannot share in eternal life, if before the end of his life he does return and is incorporated into the Church…
(Chapt.38) Most firmly hold and never doubt that not only all pagans but also all Jews, all heretics and schismatics who finish this life outside of the Catholic Church, will go into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and angels (Mt> 25:41)
Peace be with you
I hope you don’t mind a different perspective. If a man other than Christ can forgive sins then that person that has been forgiven does not need Christ, right? That forgiven person can make it to Heaven through the pope, with no knowledge of Christ, right? How can that be? You are putting the pope in the spot of Christ. Once again thinking that one needs the Catholic church to understand the Bible is what took place in the dark ages and it led to persecution of Christians by the Catholic church.
ShinGive not that which is holy to dogs; neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turning upon you, they tear you.
Matthew 7:6
All of the quotes above express the continual Catholic understanding of these matters, and should be understood spiritually. Those who do not seek to, will not, and those who condemn them, will be weighed by their own judgement.
Your quickness to judge others does not become you - as I’m sure you are a sincere believer. No one was condeming Popes in favor of Judaism or anyone else. And I will simply reply that the statement above is a calumny and a lie against Catholic history, and a totally false context to place the quotes in.
A Catholic would not condemn Popes and saints in favor of Judaism so, but instead would seek a real understanding of the subject.
Thanks for that quote. Only God can forgive sin but he gave that authority to men to act as his ministers. Only Catholic priests have been given that authority to forgive sin in the “person of Christ”Not only did you quote half a verse, but you forgot one.
Mark 2:7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
QUOTE=Newbie2;7009519]You’re correct, I didn’t specify. It’s a very long discussion.See CCC 830 or so and following.
Hi, Newbie, have you read CCC 169 and 171? St. Fulgentius position is not stated emphatically in the CCC, but Jesus himself took care to declare the position of St. Fulgentius to which the CCC never disagrees with.I would say that St. Fulgentius’ position on the Jews is not consistant with Catholic thought on the possibility of the salvation of Jews.
QUOTE=Robbinson;7010240]Your quickness to judge others does not become you - as I’m sure you are a sincere believer. No one was condeming Popes in favor of Judaism or anyone else.
Peace be with you Robbinson; The difference here from what the Early Church Fathers and Popes quoted about no salvation outside the Catholic Church and the CCC deals with the Popes and all the successors of the Apostles who have the divine given power to bind and loose on earth.I, and others, have pointed to express teaching in the Catechism on this issue - you have ducked the direct question of whether you disagree with the Catechism’s teaching on invincible ignorance and, sadly, reverted to judgement and recriminiation. That saddens me more than whatever your answer would be.
