I’m absolutely stunned there’s never been a Pope called Francis before now

I like him - just an instinct.

I think he looks like a lovely, kind, intelligent man.

I hope all my Catholic friends have had their anxiety over these past weeks put to rest, and Pope Francis will do what’s needed to help their Church flourish.

I wish him well.

Sarah x 🙂
Thanks for the kind post and other non-Catholics here who have shared with us this graceful moment, that Habemus Papam, we have a new Pope. 🙂

Yes, it’s a wonder why the name Francis was not chosen at least for the last seven hundred years considering that St. Francis of Assisi was one of the great saints of the Catholic Church.

However, the new Pope being a Jesuit himself, the choice of the name is not surprising. I am still drowsy with excitement of the new Pope but with a little contemplation, like what God is trying to tell us as believing Christians with this development. Is the church responding to ‘the sign of time’?

We believe that God raise up men and women whom he chooses to do his work on earth and the new Pope Francis 1 is no doubt such person. Academically his resume attests to that but perhaps more importantly is his choice of name, if that’s a reflection of the nature of his incoming papacy.

Just saw a survey in the US that among other things, about 35 percents of Catholics are saying that the Church is not good. Is this an indication that this may be the thing that his papacy may try to address in the mould of St Francis? Though from a well to do background, St Francis gave all this up and answered the Lord’s call, “Francis, go and rebuild my church (which, as you can see, is falling into ruins),” in a spirit that embraced simplicity and poverty. In other word, he has embraced the basic call of Christianity. Will this be the thrust of his papacy?

I like a lot of what I’ve been reading and hearing about the new Pope. He appears to be a very genuine and wise man of faith. As a Methodist, I will be praying for him and my Catholic brothers and sisters as they embark on this new journey with a new Pope. 🙂

not poking fun at any group, but the fundies who ate up the “Peter the Roman” junk, how are they feeling? It’s time to quit worrying about WHEN Jesus is coming back and LIVE AND LOVE like he’s coming back any moment.

God bless our new shepherd on Earth. Very happy! I too was shocked no Pope ever was called Francis.

I tried to peek into the CARM forum, but I noticed they are locked now to public view. You have to register to read it.
Interesting…

I am thrilled for the Catholic Church. I pray that God will bless Pope Francis with a faithful and fruitful reign as the head of the Church.

One minor question – I see that people are referring to him as Francis I. Why not just plain Francis since there is no predecessor or successor by that name?

Amen.

You make sense there, pastor. News about this is still scarce at the moment but it seems that’s what the media quoted as how the name will be. 🙂

I wondered that myself.😃

We had Pope John Paul I made a precedent when being elected as Pope, he chose the name John Paul I, the first and only pope to use “the first” in his regnal name.

That seemed to be very prophetic as he died shortly thereafter and for his successor to take the name again as a symbol of continuation.

Edit: Goodness, not saying that this is again ‘prophetic’. :o

The new Pope is installed and within hours the CARM forum goes dark? :hmmm:

I like Pope Francis already!

I know nothing about him. But congrats, Catholic adelphoi, on having chosen a new pope. I hope he does well. :highprayer:

I must admit I was a little disappointed that they didn’t choose me. But obviously they weren’t ready for that much change. 😛

I wish the new Pope all the best. He has a tough job ahead.

Just wondering. Does anyone know if he took his name from St. Francis of Assisi (one of my favorite saints)?

I looked through CARM. So much hatred concentrated in one place. They need our prayers.

Maybe one of the brave CAF members who is also a member there can update us.
My guess? They are teetering on the edge of being a “hate site” like Stormfront or Westboro Baptist. If thats the case, some cable outlets may block them.
A smaller forum, Stuff Fundies Like, consisting of survivors of fundamentalism has a couple of very respectful threads there.
The trads are goin’ nuts on Fisheaters.
I haven’t checked the dinosaur forums like Baptist Board.

From what I have read of him he reminds me of St. John Chrysostom in outlook. May he have a similar impact on the church and world.
