Perhaps you will both appreciate this anecdote.

One time as I was driving through Virginia on my way to Washington D.C., I stopped for some coffee in a Waffle House. I was alone and so was sitting at the counter. A young man was the waiter and, asking where I was going, he exclaimed disdainfully “Washington is full of Yankees”.

About that time, a middle aged couple came in and sat down in a booth. As they started talking to each other I recognized that they came from “further south” than Virginia. When the waiter came and asked for their drinks, the woman said “Well ah think ahl have a cherra coke” and the waiter said “I’m sorry ma’am, but we don’t have any cherry coke”. The woman responded “You mean y’all don’t have cherra sirrup to put in the coke?” and he said “no ma’am”. So she said “Ok, then ahl just have a co-cola”.

The waiter went to get the drinks and the woman’s husband leaned over and said quietly “Dear, you have to be more careful. We’re up north now and these yankees do things differently.”
:rotfl:

My parents retired in FL. God grant them eternal rest, but not in the same room. 😃

When I visited them for the first time, I had never seen the real FL. I had only been to Disney and the like. I noticed that my Dad was feeling kind of lost. I asked him about it. His immediate answer was, “Someone turned the map upside down.” It cracked me up. The southernmost state of the USA is like a suburb of the Northeast.

My poor mother who was Israeli and spoke with a very strong Haiffa accent and has spent most of her married life in VA couldn’t find her way around K-Mart, because people didn’t understand when she said things like “Da yuns carry bottled vawter.”
If that doesn’t work, perhaps we can make Oct 4th a national holiday? I hear there are many non-Catholics who are quite fond of St. Francis.
That idea just sent the rest of the extreme Traditionalists running in the opposite direction. Did you forget that they do not like Franciscans? What’s the term that Iast heard them use? Help me out here, “Mealy toast” or something like that.
I’m definitely for this, on top of it being the Feast of St. Francis but October 4th is also my birthday!!
If it’s your birthday, that changes everything. I say bring out the fireworks. :dancing:

Born on his feast day, and came back to the Church thanks to his sons and daughters at Steubenville. Between those two things, I know that Francis has always been watching over me 🙂

I don’t know about other trads, but I adore St Francis and am quite fond of at least one Franciscan. 😉

Br JR, I caught some of them bringing their pets to get blessed on Oct 4th. Should have sent you pictures. 😉

He loves you too my child. :hug1:

If he’s ever in NYC, he’s going to make it a point to visit with you. 👍

You should have.

I’ve mentioned many times the SSPX chapel that we have in our town and the two priests. The one loves the friars and the other won’t speak to us. How those two live in the same house and have not killed each other is a mystery second only to the Trinity.

Last year, on the Solemnity of St. Francis, my buddy asked me if we could have a joint blessing of the animals. He said that the kids in their chapel have never seen a real Franciscan in 3-D. We agreed that since they don’t have canonical status, we could not have Father bless the animals at our house. Since his confrere does like us, I would not be invited to go there for the blessing. So we picked a nearby park, pretty neutral place.

The kids came with their animals and we had loads of fun. Besides blessing the animals, the kids were adorable. It’s so beautiful to see children who have not been tainted by prejudice. One little boy kept calling me St. Francis. A teenager asked me where I got my habit, to which I replied, “Lord and tailor”. He cracked up.

I saw all kinds of creepy crawly things that day, along with the usual array of cats and dogs. The only animal that I’m sure St. Francis would have had serious doubts about were the ferrets. They’re a little smelly.

Do you know that the other priest did not come out? I could not believe it. The brothers went and of course his associate too. It was beautiful. We did the blessing in Latin. I have the actual blessing of St. Francis for the animals in Latin and Italian, so I taught them both to Father. He insisted on Latin. I had no problems doing it in Latin as long as the kids are used to Latin. I sneaked in a few Italian blessings too. 😃

At the beginning, the adults were a little reserved with the brothers, probably because of the way we dress. But after an hour, they were OK. One brother has long hair down to his waist and another wears a baseball cap everywhere he goes. We call him the new Brother Hat. A third brother carries his skateboard and does all kinds of amazing tricks on that thing. The kids loved it. I think some of the moms felt it was a little “informal” for a religious to ride a skateboard. We had the blessing and a little fun for the kids. I explained to them how St. Francis would find great joy in nature, because everything in nature reminds us of how much God loves us. To which kid asked, “Even hurricanes?”

We call him the new Brother Hat.
This is the greatest nickname in the history of CAF posting.

“What’s up, Brother Hat?” “This here is Brother Hat”. “Hey Brother Hat, you’re on potato duty!”

In the early community, the chronicles speak about a Brother Hat, who later became a heretic, not because of his hat. Maybe it was on too tight, who knows. 🤷
