And it could be argued that SS and Medicare need to be overhauled. No doubt this could lead to greater savings or more benefits for people that actually need it.
There are better ways to manage SS and Medicare.

Read up on the Galveston Plan as a substitute for Social Security, which could be installed on a sliding scale basis AND with "Galveston 1, Galveston 2, etc … lots of variations that people could pick and choose from … choice in retirement safety net.

And another successful example in the Chilean Plan:

Let individuals have unlimited Roth IRA’s. Instead of the 100 page Pub 590 baloney limitations.

Instead of Medicare, use the Indiana Plan.

health–savings–accounts.com/plans-in.htm

Allow both tax credits and full tax deductibility for medical expenses, on a sliding scale based on income and allowing patients and health care providers to work on the cost issues. Tort reform to eliminate “defensive medicine” … meaning minimize the uncertainty from law suits. And use “loser pays” [you can buy insurance to cover you in case you lose.] Allow charitable funds to be fully tax-deductible to help cover truly chronic miserable cases. Allow hospitals to sell health insurance. Allow doctors to sell health insurance. We need a wide variety of plans that people can choose from. By the way, my Amish friends pay cash for health care.

Instead of government benefits for illegal aliens, use the Eisenhower Plan.

Fear is the driving force today. Threats of economic collapse and millions of jobs lost. The President is simply in the final stages of negotiations. In this case, “He walked away from the current version of the deal,” something business negotiators do all the time. There should be two more dramatic incidents between now and August 2nd. Threats to cut the credit rating of the US among them.

But the GOP knows that if Obama saves millions of jobs, his numbers will go up, and election time is fast approaching.

Peace,
Ed

:thumbsup:Thanks for this common sense post!
No compromise is juvenile, that is not the way real leaders operate in our Government.
The bull in the china cabinet, Cantor, is looking to be speaker!
The country’s best interest is not what he is about at the moment.
His interest is ideology and power!

Who said there was no comprise?

There just isn’t a compromise that Obama will agree to.

The democrats (and the media) remember beating Bush Sr over head with the “No new taxes pledge” after he “compromised” and signed a tax increase bill. It would appear they are hoping to repeat that tactic with the Republican House freshmen class. Beyond that I see no reason why they have taken such a strong stance on “needing” new taxes. If the Republicans simply rolled over and voted for a new debt increase without a fight does anyone think the democrats would be insisting on a tax increase? 🤷

It’s just politics, the democrats are hoping the Republicans will give them a club to be used during the elections. They can’t run on their records in 2012 any more than they could in 2010.

A family runs out of money to pay their bills. They still had reasonable credit, so they applied for several high-limit credit cards and then consolidated their debts onto those cards. They breathed a gentle sigh of relief.

One year passed.

The family continued to pay the minimums on the credit card bills and they began to feel great stress because their kids needed some new clothes and their house needed some repair. So, they opened another credit card and then they breathed a sigh of relief again.

One year passed.

Time for little Johnny to go to Catholic schoool, but mom and dad have no money–he will have to attend public school. The family car needs replacing…but it will have to wait. The family wonders why they have no money, they seem to make a lot of income–dad comes up with the brilliant idea of applying for more credit, he figures raising their family debt ceiling won’t hurt, they will just find a way to pay it off later.

This time the banks say no…what does that family do? Mom and Dad tell their kids that some cutting must take place, but the kids revolt against that idea…so Mom and Dad claim bankruptcy instead–their revolving credit is erased, but they will have terrible credit for years to come, but the kids get to keep all their internet and cell accesses. Woohoo.

Several months later they start the cycle all over again.

Saves millions of jobs by not destroying them? Well isn’t that big of him.

It’s like me saying “I’m going to save you thousands in medical bills because I won’t run you over in the parking lot”. I don’t think we need anymore benevolence like that in this country.

  • 63% of households have computers with internet access
  • 99% of households have at least one television
  • 56% of households pay for cable television
  • 70% of households have cell phones
  • 90+% of households have at least one car, and about 58% have at least 2 cars
And according to the government, these are features of “extended” well-being". :

*]appliances and electronic goods, such as possession of refrigerators, cellular telephones, and computers
*]housing conditions, including level of satisfaction with overall home repair, adequate living space, and sufficient privacy
*]neighborhood conditions and community services, such as: road conditions and the presence of abandoned buildings; satisfactory police, fire, and medical services; and attitudes towards local schools
*]meeting basic needs, including the ability to pay bills in full, to avoid eviction, and to have sufficient food
*]the expectation of help, should need arise, from friends, family, and the community

[/INDENT]Now, given these , are you really suggesting that the nearly 50% that pay no income tax cannot afford to pay any income tax at all? Even the top 10% of that group? Really? Do you think those with cell phones, multiple cars, cable television, internet access, etc, cannot afford a couple of hundred dollars per year in taxes?

Cell phones are a necessity now? You do know that you can get a land line for significantly less than a cell phone, even pre-paid plans? Qwest, where I live, offers basic phone service for only $12/mo.

If they are so poor that they need government assistance, they shouldn’t be spending their money on cable television. After all, Uncle Sam dumped billions of dollars into a coupon program for people to allow their analog televisions to receive over the air digital broadcasts for free. Why do they need cable or satellite television?
This is all nice. Let me see where I fit.

Have a computer. They’re not priced what they used to be nowadays for one without all the bells and whistles. But to save am still on slow dialup for < $10.

I have one 25" television and a small 13". No big screen, HD, wall mounted, no media room, or anything like that.

But my cable is included in my quarterly fee for my 1000 sq ft condo. Which incidentally has dropped in mkt value by 75% and is worth less than I pd for it. But that aside would be kinda silly to use rabbit ears or analog  and be paying for cable anyway. Of course my 13 inch doesn’t get as many channels because the cable co only provided one free cable digital upgrade box last yr and I refuse to pay $8 a mo for a 2nd to watch on such a small screen. My eyes aren’t what they used to be.

So can’t watch EWTN on that one.

Have one prepaid cell and drive a 6 1/2 yr old Hyundai.compact. Have a Hyundai only because it was the cheapest at the time. Would get a Ford or Chevy but not spending the money for a new one now. And forget those more expensive ones like the Prius. Fortunately I don’t drive a lot.

My frig is running on it’s last breath as it is 30 yrs old.

Could use some home repairs.

Don’t live in the most private environment.

And where I live basic landline is $25 local calls only.

Wow I’ve always felt blessed for what I have. Nothing at all extravagant or out of the ordinary of course. Fortunate not to have been on govt assistance yet except when I was a child and my father died and SS provided a benefit for my mother. But now you have me thinking I’m poorer than I thought! :

We just have to get the Senate under control, and it won’t make a difference if Obama is reelected or not.
You surely have heard about the power the minority has in the Senate, fillibusters, Presidentail vetos, and 2/3 to override.

Uh because that’s what compromise is. 🤷 Democrats agree to some cuts they might prefer not giving up. And in return Republicans agree to revenue increases for greater shared sacrifice from the rich and corporate elites that they don’t want to do.

Correct. He said that having to raise the debt ceiling was a sign of failure of leadership.
We should all appreciate the irony of that, but once we’re done laughing, i think the responsible thing to do is raise it. It was the responsible thing to do when he was running for president to. Generally it just shows that the main interest of a politician running for office is making the incumbant look bad.

:amen: Ringil, haha yeah isn’t that the truth. Sometimes I feel like a one person choir. So I sure appreciated yours and others voices tonight! 👍 It’s good to know not all Catholics have become Tea Party Republicans. I was beginning to wonder. 🙂 God bless!
I’m a cradle Catholic and I’ve never met folks like some on here in my whole life. Catholics are generally NOT like this.

Examples of some “interesting” sentiments here on CAF:
-Many slaves were actually happy and better off than before they were freed in the US.
-It’s a sin for women to wear shorts at Mass.
-Women who dress scantily are partially responsible when they are raped.
-The Inquisition wasn’t THAT bad.
-The world is 6000 years old.
-The Sun revolves around the Earth.
-Islam is voilent by it’s very nature.
-The God worshiped by muslims is a demon.
-Franco was actually a pretty good leader of Spain.
-Hitler and his regime was leftist.
-When species go extint because of human activities- it’s just nature- big wup. . . : Things go extinct all the time. . . . shrug:

I could go on and on and on. . . . . . . .

So no, the real Church isn’t like this. You should go meet some REAL Catholics at your local church and see how beautiful the faith is.

You could be sitting naked in a shredded cardboard box in the desert somewhere, picking grains of rice off the ground for dinner.
That’s why I’'m grateful and though I can’t help out as much as govt assistance could, I always tried to help out the poor homeless fellow, Mike, with a buck or 2 when I could and spend a little time chatting with him. Who according to the local newspaper no longer could perform his job due to an accident. I figured a couple bucks could get him a large soft drink and double cheeseburger once in awhile at the corner McDonald’s. Actually had seen him there. And ran into him at the grocers and he was not buying beer or cigarettes btw. He lived under a canopy up on the corner until someone hit him with their car, and then was back afterwards briefly but moved on.

I believe it is shameful with all the wealth in this country that we have so many poor. Apparently individuals, the Church, and other faith based groups can’t do it all themselves. The Church has had 2000 yrs. And yes I know the Church gives a lot for the poor and this particular priest was not at all representative of all priests, but this is why it upset me when the local parish priest at a Mass I attended said in his homily that day, that his answer to the poor was to get a job. While saying how good it was to beautify the sanctuary with new flooring, pews, a marble altar, various other decorative items.

Anyway because individuals and faith groups haven’t been able to do it all themselves, is where a govt role can come into play. And I seriously doubt the Lord would turn away any help for the poor He could get. But that is my faith. God bless you in yours and peace.

CMATT,

I’m sorry that you had to hear the priest speak that way. I will say that this is pretty uncharacteristic of how priest generaly are. Our clergy have love for the poor and marginalized as does the Church.

Hi Ringil, I know and I did edit my post to clarify that. I’ve only been back there once but after that incident, I called ahead to ask who would be celebrating the Mass I was attending. 🙂 He is young but I do still have this fear about where the direction of the Church is headed as I hear younger priests tend to be more conservative in their outlooks, if that’s true.

Obama knows what it means to compromise.
I’m sorry…this is the most outrageous / funniest statement made by you.
I’m laughing so hard - I’m crying.

Remind me of Mr Obama’s take on funding Planned Parenthood and shutting down the Government, please

They didn’t have to attempt to block anything as it turned out. Obama knows what it means to compromise.
What compromise did he work out with republicans?

The only compromise with with the democrats in his own party. We all saw how he compromised on the Health Care Law, billions were spent buying off members of his own party to lock in their votes.

Like how PP performs far more cancer screenings than abortions?
