Why did the media say Romney/Ryan would not be doing campaign events today? Paul Ryan was on the stump earlier in Florida, and Romney is on the stump in Iowa

I believe that is a self answering question 😃

Usual MSM conspiracy to destroy the GOP?? 🤷

It does? I’ve been living here 12 years. I wish someone would tell me where they are. :o
McKay’s Bookstore and the Barnes & Noble are both on Route 234 about 5 minutes from the Route 66 exit. They are pretty close to one another. McKay’s is huge!

Is that area code supposed to be special? I know that a Manhattan or D.C. or L.A. area code is desirable. Mine is 646, lower Manhattan, and has a greater cachet than 718, Brooklyn 😦 where my kids and wife live.

Glad I didn’t get a flyover land 501 (Little Rock) area code! 😃
As of 2011, at least, Fairfax County was listed as the 2nd most affluent county in the United States with a median household income of $105,797. I think the “703” is related to the kids’ lifestyle in Fairfax County.

Observer only posts about three times a year. I wouldn’t wait for a response if I were you, until at least the mide-term elections, which ironically, he also knows the outcome to.
I pop in this place from time to time and lurk here mostly because there are some interesting discussions. Of course I don’t agree with everything here, but I always like to try to understand where people are coming from. I’m happy to answer any questions, but I didn’t see any specifically from the poster you are quoting.

As far as transparency goes, I can’t disagree that I have been disappointed with Obama on this and some other things. But that doesn’t take away from the dozens of wonderful things he’s accomplished, such as improving health care, capturing Bin Laden, saving the auto industry, and creating steady job growth in a country on the edge of disaster from the previous administration. Also, I can’t tell what Mitt believes - he lies so much I don’t think he even knows what he believes. He said in the debate “I’ll create 12 million jobs…” and then in the same debate says “Government doesn’t create jobs.” He was for Obamacare, then against it, and now wants to keep parts of it. He changes his stance like the weather in the midwest.

I see a lot more pro-life plans being proposed from Obama than Mitt Romney. Romney wants to end Medicare and Medicaid - not very pro-life for our seniors. Mitt wants to allow children to get denied health care - not very pro-life. Paul Ryan wants to force people to have children that are raped - not pro-freedom, but rather a dictatorship. I know many of you on here see things one way, but I try to look at everything as a whole. Life and God has taught me things are not black and white, and simply voting for a party because they are supposedly “Christian” is dangerous and irresponsible. I’m not a democrat or republican BTW.

I was talking with my grandpa the other day. He was telling me how he’s been a life long republican, but changed his voting in 2008. I asked him why he voted for Obama, and he said “because the modern day republican party has become really nasty and violent. They are no longer the prudent Christians they used to be. We now have radicals who want to project their beliefs on everyone. Also, Obama had some great ideas, including the goal of saving medicare and social security.” If every republican knew today’s republican party is not like how it used to be, they would not vote republican.

Bookstores still exist?
Yes, sir, they do. Fortunately, I might add.

I refuse to go with a Nook or Kindle. I like the touch, smell and feel of a good hardcover book in my hands, or on my library shelves. My three volume biography of St. Josemaria Escriva (by Andrés Vázquez de Prada) looks quite handsome on my desk.

I like books, too, but the reality is that they will go away.

The true value in books are the words conveying the thoughts of the author. That value still exists in the digital formats. Hand written letters have all but disappeared, as well. It doesn’t make the warm writings of our loved ones less valuable, even though I still prefer a written letter.

I actually like hard books better as well but my kindle has been a godsend with my visual impairment. I can read about twice as fast as I could before.

The kindle is not good for “skipping around” a book and anything somewhat obscure is not going to be on it.

I would LOVE to have an app which sends the daily readings to me but oddly such a thing does not exist. Of course you can get the daily office but that’s too complicated and I just want the reading sent to me like a newspaper.

I am a long-time Rockefeller Republican, often referred to as a “Country Club Republican”. We are socially moderate, fiscally conservative, and nearly obsolete. Nonetheless, I find the Democratic Party an abysmal alternative. Thus, I remain a stalwart member of the GOP.

Such a thing has to exist. I get the daily readings from the Rule of St Benedict (w/reflections by a religious) daily, but it is emailed to me.

And our kids are not being taught cursive. That is absolutely unreal to me. I can hardly wrap my head around it.

I am thinking of just “bribing” my kid to learn it when she is older. Tell her I will buy her something big if she learns it.

I understand your point. However, I grew up loving books and I will die cherishing my books. No Kindle or Nook for this guy!

I run a prayer list that sends out a daily email with links to the current days mass readings and info on the Saint of the day. PM me your email address and ill sign you up

Check out the Laudate app for the Kindle. It doesn’t send them too you, but it does let you just read the daily readings.

Election Day Up in the Air?
Reporters received no comment from the Obama administration regarding whether the President is considering moving or altering Election Day as a result of Hurricane Sandy. This is the relevant exchange from the gaggle aboard Air Force One:
Q Jay, some of the utilities are saying that the power is going to be out in some areas for up to 10 days, which would obviously include Election Day. Is there any contingency planning to alter the Election Day schedule because of this?
MR. CARNEY: I think that is not something I’m able to address. The fact is the storm is just taking effect now and having an impact now and making landfall I believe tonight. We have to focus on not the campaign and not the election, but on making sure that all federal resources are both prepositioned and in place to help states and localities respond to the storm, to help Americans who are affected by the storm. That’s our focus right now.
Q Would the President have the power to adjust Election Day?
MR. CARNEY: I don’t know the answer to that question. I think you’re getting way ahead of yourself here.
Precedent for Delaying the Election?
Now comes NBC’s Chuck Todd, who tells us there’s precedent for postponing the election:
Look, there is some precedent to this. During 9/11 – on 9/11 – was the New York City mayoral race, and they delayed everything. You know, it would have to be up to a local authority to do that, but that local authority, I mean, I think, look, you’re going to be getting into all sorts of provisional ballot issues, I think that that’s the more likely scenario. You don’t postpone the day itself, but maybe you expand the types of ballots, maybe you’re more lenient on checking people in, but forcing provisional votes, so it’s going to take longer to verify the voters, I think that that’s the most likely scenario, is that you would have some localities that would have to move, change positions, maybe even delay, but that would seem the least likely option.
The president has no power to delay; change election date

One more small, but major point about Mitt. He’s often projected as a successful business man. However, he’s created many of the lowest wage jobs in the country. Jobs at Staples usually pay less than $10 an hour. For a multi-billion dollar company, this is inexcusable, especially when math proves they could afford to pay their employees $18 an hour or more. Greed fuels many of these people like Mitt Romney - that’s how he became so successful. Much like Sam Walton’s Wal-Mart, these companies destroy the middle class by providing lousy jobs and destroying all the other competition through lower prices. I never shop at Wal-mart because of this, and they provide awful food so I have no reason to go in there anyway.
