I think Obama was dissing Fox, don’t you?
I think that may would take that for granted, but he was careful to avoid saying that specifically, so as not to detract from his important, broader point.

We cannot function as a democracy without a common, baseline set of facts. We cannot function if we live in bubbles filled selectively with facts of our own choosing, We cannot survive as a nation without a common understanding of how we know something to be true or false.

I think you are right, but I would add that we don’t agree on what facts are important to the discussion.

43% of Nigerian Americans have a college degree. Is that important to the discussion of whether or not to allow people from Nigeria to come to the US?

I think most would agree that it is more important than whether or not Nigeria is a $h!thole.

But before agreeing on a hierarchy of importance it is crucial to agree on which of these propositions are facts, and how we go about making such a determination.

Having actually WATCHED the interview, President Obama was drawing attention that with the algorithms that work in our world, we are more divided than ever.

That what we are fed on our feeds and even our google searches is subjective to our own personal bias. That because of these, the divisions are greater and it ends up where those who consume news from one outlet live on a different planet than those who consume the opposing outlet.

We have to stop demonizing those with different opinions.

I think that the rise of the prime-time opinion shows on cable have blurred the line between hard news and whatever you call Hannity or Cooper. I won’t say they don’t have ethics.

Theo520:
When I was a kid, my family watched the news every night. We had 30 minutes of “World News”, at the end of that broadcast there might be a “commentary” segment. It was clearly established this was commentary. People selected which network to watch based on the commentary that best aligned with their world view, but, they did not have this virulent hate for the other commentators that we see today.

Now, everything is commentary. There is no line, we hate everyone who does not speak to our personal bias.

No. You inferred it, or, arguably, made it up. He did not imply it.
ROFL 😂 😁 🤩

Didn’t you read the news headline?

It’s clearly not presented as he ripped all the major networks for their polarization.

Didn’t you read the news headline?
FOX called Obama’s words a rip at FOX viewers.
But his comments are no more about FOX than they are about NPR.
Your inference is not his implication.

Please read more of the interview than just the FOX headline. I think that the point that the President was making is similar to the one that you are making.

Well, no one knows pretzel logic quite like a Fox News viewer.
Do the Democrats who watch Fox News (which make up a percentage of overall viewership) have “pretzel logic”, according to you? The disparaging of viewers is so unnecessary.

It depends: do they come up with disparaging stuff like “No ,not surprised here, nor am I not surprised by the pretzel logic from the usual suspects that disparage FOX as faux news”?

“One of the biggest challenges we have to our democracy is the degree to which we don’t share a common baseline of facts,” Obama said. "If you watch Fox News, you are living on a different planet than you are if you are listening to NPR.”
Here’s the thing. The reason President Obama believes that we have a different set of baseline facts is that he made up a whole other baseline saying for one thing, he didn’t need congress, he had his pen. There was nothing going on over at the IRS, nothing at all untowards… (didn’t the IRS recently pay a fine for some mishandling of the rules over there under Lois Learner?) I know a lot of you want to point out every time DT “lies” but the country sure put up with a LOT of mis-truths over the last…years. He told us that there was no more qualified person to hold the office of President than HRC when the …body language didn’t say the same thing.
Many people suggest that conservatives are just repeating talking points of Fox News but that’s not the truth. We have eyes and we have ears and we can add 2+2. Some of us went to college… (doesn’t mean we don’t make typos and grammatical errors…)

And what would this balance look like? Would it say, look like “President Trump said something outrageous, but here, for balance, is someone that denies he said it.”
To be fair, I heard that very thing on CBS news last night… 🙂

My point was, it wasn’t my inference.

The best quote from that interview with President Obama was “you are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts”.

I am pretty sure that we can take that as metaphorical.
Which is something that President Trump is not allowed to use in his language without deranged leftists screaming that he is a LIAR!!!

We cannot survive as a nation without a common understanding of how we know something to be true or false.
We finally agree on something, but this goes much deeper to whether our current president said this or that in a private meeting, or whether Hillary knowingly sent/received classified information on an unsecured server.

We cannot survive as a nation without common shared values and identification AS a nation, and we are losing that. Our schools (from grade schools through universities) are predominately leftists who focus on what is WRONG with America instead of what is RIGHT with America. Instead of teaching how great we are, despite our mistakes, they focus on our mistakes and instill in our children that America is somehow to blame for many of the wrongs of the world.

IT is THAT baseline set of facts that is destroying our Republic, and partially led to President Trump’s election, and the visceral reaction of the left who is hell-bent on destroying him.
