The Crusades very much resembled the war and peace of the time, both in Europe and in the Middle East, **until the very end, when large Turkic “nation states” made short work of both Crusaders and Arab rulers. The Arabs, of course, got the worst of that because they had no place to go. The Europeans could take to their ships and leave…and did.
This is what is left out of so many discussions. You can’t judge history with today’s lenses.

The good part of all this mess is there we now have a critical mass of people who know the real history and can fight back against the common(wrong) interpretation.

I did not express the view that the Crusades were a blot on Christianity. I only pointed out that even some some Catholics have that view. And they don’t think they are attacking their own religion by saying this.
I did not say that you viewed the Crusades as a blot on Christianity. I strongly suggested that you used selected perspective to virtually obscure the vulgar, clumsy and obvious equivalence that the President employed. That is your right, of course.

I have been listening to a lot of interesting commentary on the radio re O’s comments at the Prayer Breakfast yesterday.
One perspective is that O is indeed a closet Muslim.Theory being
his de facto father was Frank Marshall Davis,an avowed Muslim and a red diaper baby.
Another comment was both O and Michelle need to heed the advice of Barbara Bush, who once stated that" you don’t go into someone’s home, when invited, then proceed to insult the host".Basically what O odd yesterday by throwing Christians under the bus.
Thoughts?

Those were my thoughts as well. I live in St. Louis and we just celebrated the 250th anniversary of our city’s founding. The Catholic community of St. Louis celebrated our city’s namesake, King Louis IX, a leading figure in the Crusade and the only king of France to be sainted. We’re way ahead of the crowd in knowing the true story of the Crusades. 👍

“We are summoned to push back against those who would distort OUR religion for their nihilistic ends,” Obama
🤷 It could be taken either way.

In my mind, perhaps the worst part of Obama’s citation of the Crusades is that it affirms an entirely mistaken belief on that part of the Muslim world that’s Arabic. The Crusades were initiated at a time when the Turks were already destroying the vaunted Arab “Caliphate”. Ultimately, Turkic groups finished it off entirely and sent the Arab world into a desolate state from which it has never fully recovered.

It’s also true that the dying Fatimid caliphate had long allowed Christians access to the holy places and did not harm or harass Christian visitors or natives. It allowed Christian shrines and churches to operate as well as religious orders that tended to Christian pilgrims. Had the Seljuk Turks not seized the area, the Crusades would almost certainly never have happened. The Seljuks were cruel to Christian pilgrims and Arab Muslims and Christians alike.

And so, Obama picked the exactly wrong story to affirm; one that is a slander on Christians and which actually supports the idea that the cruel side of Islam (Seljuks yesterday, ISIS today) has a certain legitimacy because “Crusaders” are a never-to-be-forgotten threat to Arab Muslims.

Hi Jeanne S. Sometimes we females are ignored on these threads. So I will reply to your post! I did not know Frank Marshall Davis was a muslim. I have heard that he played a big part in Obama’s adolescence.

I also listened to a lot of radio commentary on what Obama said and many really singled out his use of the words “before you get on your high horse” and pointing out what was done in the name of Jesus. I am 62 and have never associated slavery being done in the name of Jesus!! Obama’s arrogance just never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks Rob!!! 👍

Good luck with your LPN school. It is time consuming, but in the end will be rewarding.

Is this thread about the news or personal matters??
“Amazing Grace” is a Christian hymn published in 1779, with words written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807).
Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life’s path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed (involuntarily forced) into service in the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel so severely that he called out to God for mercy, a moment that marked his spiritual conversion. However, he continued his slave trading career until 1754 or 1755, when he ended his seafaring altogether and began studying Christian theology.

Christians helped act against slavery.

I think these conversations can take place in the back fence or personal messages.

Agree,he is a real piece of work.I fear that we are only just beginning to see what he is really about. As others have said,he is such a bitter and angry man,who obviously detests much about America. Next two years can’t go by quickly enough for me,!

I think Obama knows that if he cites something more recent, it may be more incendiary, like this photo (Omaha, Nebraska, 1919)

If one goes down that path, what it has to do with religion I don’t know,

But Obama said “God Bless Planned Parenthood”.

Yet, we know how many abortions a year happen in the United States, worse than racial strife, 3 days is worse than the racial strife in America and President Obama is a big supporter of so-called reproductive rights. Reverend Clennard Childress’ website speaks of this.

So President Obama supports worse.
