Ohio St. Vincent DePaul food kitchen upset about Paul Ryan photo op

I’m not sure if this belongs in world news or catholic news, since this involves both.

If you click the link, you see Paul Ryan, wearing an apron while washing a pot at a St. Vincent de Paul food kitchen in Youngstown Ohio. Here’s the problems with that:

Now, the Republican vice presidential candidate is in hot water over the impromptu campaign “photo op.” The director of the Mahoning County, Ohio, St. Vincent de Paul Society says he was not contacted and that the food kitchen does not serve up candidates.
“We’re a faith-based organization: We are apolotical because the majority of our food is from private donations,” Brian Antol told The Washington Post. “It’s strictly in our bylaws not to do it. They showed up there and they did not have permission. They got one of the volunteers to open up the doors.
“The photo op they did wasn’t even accurate. He did nothing. He just came in here to get his picture taken at the dining hall.”

It’s true that the St. Vincent de Paul Society operates under the general dictum of " … don’t let the left hand know what the right hand is doing …" a scriptural admonition to giving charity secretly. And now Mr. Antol ( who is … a SVdP official? A registered Democrat? A media critic or professional pundit?) weighs in that the photo op was improper.

OK. He weighed in. Ryan’s group freely took his photo. Antol criticized not only Ryan’s group’s supposed opportunism - which possibly put SVdP in tax exempt jeopardy our somethng (?) - but added a personal take and critique that Ryan “did nothing.”

If he “did nothing” … he did nothing wrong. If his doing nothing other than posing for a photo was something Antol thought was a lie … he has addressed it quite publicly and negatively … in effect confessing another’s perceived sin. That too could be seen as uncharitable - as Ryan’s calling attention to the good work SVdP does could substantially contribute to the charity’s getting more donations and volunteers as well.

If this is Paul Ryan’s greatest public sin … perhaps he should be a candidate for his Wisconsin parish’s married Diaconate program. Or his Washington DC’s parish’s.

We’ll see what happens to this soup kitchen and its bureaucrats when the HHS mandate hits.
