Only 31 deaths of children under age 15 involving COVID-19. Common flu-related child deaths from 37 to 187 during regular flu season. Should Governors

No excess deaths from Covid found in new study.
It is not a “new study.” It is a “new opinion piece in a student newsletter.” And it is not even by a medical professional. It is by a director of the Applied Economics department. So let’s not give this opinion more cachet than it deserves.

As for the data itself, I refer anyone interested in a more authoritative analysis of excess deaths to the CDC:
Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19
Why would she need to be a medical professional when she is dealing with statistics and not therapeutics? Her expertise is in statistics.
The methodologies in using the correct statistics involve technical medical expertise. That is clear from reading the CDC reference I cited.
Your response both misrepresents the article as an “opinion piece,” because it simply presents data you don’t like…
No, it is opinion, because it draws opinionated conclusions from the wrong data.
You are losing “cachet” by the minute.
I never claimed any cachet, but the CDC, which contradicts her, has plenty of cachet.

Anyway, the article has been retracted because the editors realized it was being misinterpreted to spread dangerous misinformation.

Nah, it has been retracted because everything has been politicized by the left and big tech who will not permit anything that goes against the narrative that we are being coerced and bullied to accept.

933 children (under age 13) were killed in 2016 in the US.

Traffic accidents.

Driving to school is much more dangerous than the Corona virus.
The grandkids of the woman living two doors up from my mother in law were kept in school. There were limited restrictions in the area where they live (so many complaints about wanting to ‘get back to normal’). Very few limits on travel. No quarantine when you get back. Hardly any limits on group gatherings. No easy testing facilities. No signing in and leaving contact details if you went to a restaurant or a pub or a cafe. So…one of the kids gets it. And passes it on to his gran.

She died three days ago and her husband is now in Intensive Care.

What do you tell the young kid? 'Hey, don’t worry. Do you know how many old ladies got run over last year?

Who is politicizing this? Most people are trying to tell you to listen to medical advice and you claim that you are being ‘bullied and coerced’. That medical advice is a restriction on your freedoms.

And you say that the advice is political…

The problem with anecdotal evidence like yours is that it cherry picks a bad case and portrays it as the rule, while completely ignoring the negative effects on the other side.

Like all public policy decisions, such a hyper-focused, emotionally disturbing case skews analysis by avoiding the big picture cost/benefit analysis.

Yes, Covid can kill the elderly, but school shutdowns and lockdowns have a far reaching impact that you are avoiding in your skewed assessment.

CDC Director Robert Redfield.
“We’re seeing, sadly, far greater suicides now than we are deaths from Covid. We’re seeing far greater deaths from drug overdose, that are above excess, than we had as background, than we are seeing deaths from Covid.”
For example…

Of course the medical advice being promoted by the media is politicized. There is an equal, and likely far larger, body of evidence on the other side that the media ignores or censors.

See my last post. I can provide a myriad of articles and columns from highly credentialed medical experts who will argue precisely the opposite of what you are claiming. And, yes they are being censored, silenced and ignored for political ends.

WHO calls lockdowns “catastrophic,” but authoritarian politicians like Whitmer and Newsom and Andrews still impose them.

The far reaching effect is more people dying. One a minute in the States. Get a grip on the numbers for heaven’s sake. How’s this for a cherry picked fact: More people have died in the USA from covid since I logged in that post above an hour ago than have died in total in the whole of New South Wales since this epidemic started.

And I’m not just talking about schools. What’s the quickest you can get tested and get a result (and is there any cost to you)? Can you travel anywhere in the continental US? Can you go overseas? Is there compulsory quarantine if necessary? Is there contact tracing being done where you live? Are there compulsory limits to the number of patrons in shops and bars and restaurants? Are there limits to family gatherings? What’s the likely uptake on the vaccine?

What are you doing to prevent the toll hitting a half million? Those are honest questions and I’d appreciate a heads up. Forget what the Dems are doing - they’re not running the show yet. Give me some data on what’s happening over there right now.

Anyone feel free to post some facts if you could.

Lord rest her soul and have mercy upon her husband, father and grandfather! May her loved ones receive consolation in this, their time of sorrow. Amen.

Sadly, it might have been the same with the flu - since both target the respiratory tract. I am on anti-viral and anti-pneumonia meds. Not because of Corona, but because of a suppressed immune system. Long story, but I’ve been wearing mask and gloves for five year now. Kinda strange to appear ‘normal’ in public.

Evidence like mine? Let’s slow down just a bit, huh? I provided only a sense of perspective. Traffic deaths do not cause massive increases in government power , worldwide panic and multi-national plans (since March!) for controlled/planned economies. Ask any Eastern European how planned economies work.

At least 24/7 Corona death tolls have replaced GLOBAL WARMING!!! - for the time being. Once the vaccines kick in, it’ll be right back to melting glaciers and drowning polar bears. Exactly why I do not allow the media to program my thoughts.

Cancel the media!

The death toll will certainly rise, but a good portion of that will be from individuals in questionable health who stayed home because of the first lockdown and did not receive timely health care for very serious heart issues or cancer or some other treatable condition which did not get treated.

Those people will contract Covid and die with it because of their compromised health due to the first lockdowns, resulting in another spike. If new lockdowns once again stop people from receiving appropriate care there will be more unnecessary deaths in the future.

This is what happens when negligent or unreasonable autocrats who cannot admit they might be wrong continue to double down on their inept prior decisions. Cuomo messed up badly the first time resulting in the highest death rates of any jurisdiction, he is awarded for it, and will continue to act along the same vein causing more deaths.

I was responding to @Freddy.

I edited that post to remove the confusion.
Can you edit the last post to include some details of what’s being done to protect Americans where you live? As I type this I’m watching news reporting on the opening of the Queensland border and watching family members who had been separated for literally months being reunited. Zero comments from anyone on the politics of the matter. Just everyone glad to be together again and healthy.

So lets have some details if we could. From anyone at all.

Australia is noting the disastrous results of their government’s heavy-handed lockdown.
We are? Not being an economic expert, but I think our figures are comparable to yours. And as I said earlier, life is getting back to normal. The whole family came back from a long weekend away today. Golf, vineyards, bars, restaurants. Felt like we’re getting back to normal.

Do you want to give some details of the measures being taken where you are?

Dunno which part you live in, but there has most certainly been extensive controversy over border closures and other measures taken.

As well, there is left, center and right in Oz as well. I mention a source, you shoot it down. Nothing’s the gain.

Comparable numbers? Yes, especially since it has been in a similar manner. New York closes schools only to open them one week later. The logic of this escapes me.

I would say some disgruntlement and frustration rather than ‘extensive controversy’. The overwhelming thoughts of everyone involved is that we’re all in this together so we just need to do what we can to get out of it asap. We (NSW) thought that Queensland could have opened up earlier but you accept it and move on.

As to being comparable with the US re the financial situation, as far as I can see it’s pretty much the same or similar. But your covid figures? Off the scale compared to ours.

So again, what are the procedures you have in place to combat it? Anyone?
