True. And Miss Jeantel showed a complete disconnection to the cultural life of court behavior. There is something missing in our government and educational programs that this generational disconnect is being perpetuated.
It’s prosecutions job to educate their witnesses on correct behavior in court. I doubt they really wanted her to come off as hostile and not credible. And she did improve her demeanor the second day she testified. Someone gave her a talking to.

I probably only find it funny because my kids are adults so I haven’t had to deal with it IRL recently. So this thread is like flash back time to the same old antics. Ahh the memories.
My kids are adults now too. All I can say is, it was worth it. Time has a way of filtering memories.🙂

Oh come April it’s kind of funny. It’s like when your kid keeps saying the same thing over and over again just to get attention.

are we there yet?

are we there yet?

ARE WE THERE YET?
stop asking those existential questions !!

True. But watching her testify, I got the distinct impression she thought she was being cool by bringing in her “attitude.”

I imagine there was a deposition. That’s called basic legal procedure.

Good cross-examination will often seem like badgering, especially of a blatantly hostile and prevaricating witness.
I agree with you here. Her deposition I believe was 9 hours long if I recall the time frame.
On her behalf she didn’t seem remotely educated well enough for her educational status.
I think it was very difficult for her to answer in a way the jury could understand.

One of the jurors noted they could barely understand her or knew the meaning of some of the phrases she used which is really sad because she was an important witness.

I don’t think so; I think the whole testifying experience just was way too much for her.
The Prosecution said t hey have to deal with the witnesses they are given and most people would agree (even here) she was no help to the prosecution.

Great post. This is why we have to get past the “ebonics” and start sharing in a common culture.

I am foreign born as is my mom, she had to learn English to take her citizenship test. There is no way we can connect to the many cultures represented in our country. We need to focus on what we have in common.

When I am around Germans, I speak German. We have kept German culture in our family. I don’t expect American-born people to understand or “get into” it. Becoming a mainstream American does not mean losing your culture.

What facts are there that TM was the aggressor? The fact that TM had NO defensive wounds and GZ had plenty…the testimony given by GZ himself…and the testimony given by Rachel Jeantel stating that TM threw the first punch.
Now you really going to be on RS list.

That’s great you have been able to keep your German culture in your family. It’s fun to hear a little background on our posters here.

Peace in Christ,
Mary

Even expecting someone to adopt parts of a common culture is today viewed as imperialistic, because all cultures and values are basically considered equally good, so to teach her and expect her to read cursive and speak clearly is imperialistic at best and insensitive and racist at worst. The sad part is taxpayers have paid well over $100,000 for such an “education.”

Very wrong-headed and divisive. We have created generational underdogs. Very sad.

I wasn’t really trying to talk about myself as much as to lay ground that I know what people from other cultures go through.

Actually, we sometimes have a Christian duty to do violence. Not all violence is sin…not all inaction is commendable…sometimes it’s a sin to NOT act.
All senseless violence, such as that seen in this case, is a sin to condone.
