graciew . . .
I answered : yes, there is suffering.
And suffering comes with life…
To graciew . . .

Fair enough. I misunderstood you.

Where does your friends who disagree with you think there has been no suffering associated with lockdowns?

Mainly the discussion is same as here the economic. And lockdown and that we are tired somehow…
But then we are living kind of different realities, they have remained in one of the hardest stricken areas ( where I also have my house)and my husband and I were caught near two little town in the countryside…where we have our farm/ ranch whatever it is…
Two different perspectives. Interesting .
Anyway we really try to keep each other spirits up. And we are managing…
Hope you are doing well too, Cathoholic. Sursum corda…

The argument does not consider the reality that " going back" without restriction, would not work at this point. It assumes," if you build it, he will come."
People are not going out just because you open, any more than they would venture into the water just because it was summer in Amity, in the old Jaws movie.
Everyone is aware of the " sneaker leg" floating to the bottom then, as they are danger conscious now.
Small business is demand driven, and demand exists only with a paid working class not afraid via uncertainty to spend money. The margins of the economy we had, like it was with Clinton last time we had it, are small.
I recall the engine was a little used statistic.
" People willing to leave a present job, without having a replacement job lined up first. "
Clinton had the high water mark then( unemployment got to 3.9% at its best)
I imagine Trump’s economy approached Clinton’s. This created," irrational exuberance" if you will, to spark consumerism.
We lost it for now. It will have to cycle back. And the truth is holding on to small business right now is a pipe dream for many.

The majority of deaths in Illinois are people that are >=70 years old - 68.5%. It’s 86% of those over 60.

In the county I live in almost 73% of the cases are from those >=70 and 91% of those over 60. 44% of the deaths in the county are from nursing homes.

Doesn’t make sense that you have a problem with data. I think the more data we have the better.

So, everyone wear a mask. How hard is that?
I hate wearing a mask. I actually wear it below my nose because it keeps fogging up my glasses. It blocks much of my peripheral vision and I’ve tripped twice, and that scares me to death because once at work, about five years ago, i tripped and ended up falling and breaking my knee cap–that was awful.

I can’t wear an N95–I tried at work when they passed them out, but I couldn’t breathe–had to take it off after every 4 breaths. It was so tight I felt like I was choking. Thank goodness they relented and allowed lab people to wear the homemade cloth masks, which is what about 85% of us wear. I’ve always had a problem with tight clothing, especially around my neck or waist.

I honestly don’t think the mask makes a difference. I think the more important practicie is washing hands and not touching our eyes. JMO, and yes, I know, it’s not what the experts say.

There are people who are excused from wearing a mask because of panic attacks. I’m not saying I’m there, but I’m definitely near that.

We had a pandemic virus.
Nobody wanted to loose jobs. I don’t get these threads. What are they saying?

That a large portion of these deaths are permanent, causing permanent damage, destroying lives.
State Governors should take a step back and evaluate the data.

Too many people with their heads in the sand for no good reasons.
And we’ve wrecked the economy pursuing a tactic that is categorically based on misidentifying where protection needs to be and how it needs to be applied.

These people are fools…
I know. But what can we do about it? They have taken away our rights.
I look at Taiwan who did a great job
Yes Taiwan did a great job with NO lockdowns.
No lockdowns and 7 deaths due to corona virus in Taiwan.
USA has lockdowns with 33.5 million people filing for unemployment and 90,000 deaths due to corona virus.

Taiwan began taking measures before the problem got out of hand.
Plus
Their people accepted disciplined behavior right at the start.
They employed tracing rules we would consider unconstitutional.
Their leaders and people made it happen.

More poverty created, and more lives destroyed:

More than 2.4 million laid-off workers applied for unemployment last week, the Labor Department reported on Thursday, as the coronavirus pandemic, and the economic catastrophe it’s triggered, forced companies to continue slashing jobs.

The new report, which covers the week ending May 16, pushes the nine-week total of job losses since states directed residents to stay at home and required nonessential businesses to nearly 39 million.

Good catch. I meant a large portion of businesses closings (and job losses) are permanent.

And by the way, as Yogi Berra said, “Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical.”
