Hell of a lot easier to criticize in hindsight. The first several weeks of quarantine enjoyed massive bipartisan support. We simply DID NOT KNOW how deadly or not deadly it would be.
But with the flow of time, the Fear and Anger peddlers (like MSNBC and Fox) need something else to sell.

I stopped listening to Dr Fauci the day he said it was okay to hook up with a stranger for a sexual encounter during the pandemic … That is not a safe action - ever - any day of the week for any reason - pandemic or no pandemic … this doctor/scientist had been telling us all to stay home - no work, no visiting family, no handshakes, no school , no dinners and drinks out, no vacations, no beaches … but hey - sex with a stranger during a pandemic 
as long as you are comfortable with your own personal risk assessment…
However, your own personal risk assessment does not count for any activity except causal sex . … well except - a couple weeks later - there is no harm in protests followed riots and looting … but the protest must be followed by riots - you are not allowed to protests stay at home orders … NOPE!

There have been suicides and murder/suicides directly related to the shutdown already … there has been marital stress and strain - permanent broken families are a distinct possibility related to job loss and isolation. And the pandemic’s negative and unconsidered consequences/impacts will continue into the recovery years … in my humble opinion

If this is true, then I don’t understand why Roman Catholics like Dr. Fauci would be advocating this. He attended a Roman Catholic college in New England which had required theology courses.

I do not know if Fauci is a Catholic or not. Nor did I ever think he was only speaking to Catholics … this position that he espoused is unsafe - pandemic or no pandemic IMHO it is inherently unsafe in every instance…
The scientist doctor who said people should never shake hands again, and was telling people to stay home, not go to work, not go to school, not attend religious services because to do so put yourself and others at risk could not answer that question with “Stay home and stay chaste, Leaving your home to meet a stranger for a hook up during the pandemic would put you and others at risk” …
That response would not have addressed the immorality of meeting a stranger for a sexual encounter in general - but would have been consistent with the messaging around the stay at home orders he was strenuously advocating. But instead, Fauci said a sexual encounter with a stranger was up to the individuals personal evaluation of the risk - Ergo, why is not going to work, school, church or out to dinner also left to the individuals personal evaluation of risk … And do not say that it is because you are putting others at risk and you have to take that into account … because that “intimate hook up” involves one or both of those people leaving the safe confines of their homes - thus putting others at risk. And last time I checked, I do not think that having casual sex is an essential service, or a necessary emergency response the community at large needed to survive. Unless I missed where prostitution workers as being listed as essential.

Oh, I don’t deny that this sort of behaviour is bad either way, but I was responding to AING’S reply to why as a Catholic Dr. Fauci could be saying this and I’m just reiterating the fact that he isn’t talking to a Catholic audience or on behalf of Catholics.
And whether he’s Catholic or not is moot because as you said you don’t need a moral argument.

We knew by the end of March that Covid-19 was disastrous for long term care facilities after witnessing what happened in Kirkland, WA and Italy.
We knew by the end of March that the hospital overloads witnessed in Italy were coming almost exclusively from the care facility population. Which was decimated there.
We knew by the end of March that Covid-19 had a very disproportionate effect on people with comorbidities. Particularly if they were over 65 and in long term care facilities.
We knew by the end of March that we had to concentrate our resources on the long term care facilities to keep their residents from overwhelming the local hospitals.
We knew by the end of March that asymptomatic infected outnumbered the symptomatic infected. That knowledge came from the closed environment created on the Grand Princess cruise ship anchored off of Yokohama.
We knew by the end of March that immunity to Covid-19 was likely far more common than initially projected. Not only that, but also that anti-bodies from having had it before isn’t the sole criteria for immunity. Again from the Grand Princess cruise ship.
The Grand Princess findings were confirmed by the USS Roosevelt aircraft carrier.
We knew by the end of March that the lower latitudes were less sensitive to Covid-19 infestations and that has been posited to be the degree of sunlight exposure and vitamin D levels.
