Personally, my only problem with Cardinal Peter Turkson succeeding would be the conspiracy theories shouting ā€œMalachy’s prophecy! Malachy’s prophecy! Petrus Romanus!ā€ I don’t want to hear about that hogwash anymore; it’s tiring.

It’s nothing against the Cardinal himself, of course.
You’ve just said the same thing I am thinking. I’m practically worn out over the whole December 2012 Mayan Calendar nonsense, Nostradamus, Y2K, Dan Brown, Tim LaHaye, the Voynich Manuscript, and all the lesser doomsday prophets who frequent the various TV ministries. The last thing I want to see is more fuel heaped on the fire with the ā€œfulfillmentā€ of a prophecy made in a document supposedly ā€œdiscoveredā€ (meaning probably forged) hundreds of years after it’s namesake saint’s death: the election of a Black Pope, Peter the Roman.

Up until now I always interpreted this bogus prophecy of a ā€œblackā€ pope to mean one with an evil heart. I never considered that it could be ā€œfulfilledā€ by a righteous dark-skinned man named Peter.

I can tell from reading his bio that Peter Cardinal Turkson is a superb candidate who could be a strong pope, and who (with his background) would likely start his papacy by taking strong action to resolve the Vatican banking scandal. I have nothing personally against this man myself. I’ll also say right now that, with any other pope at the helm, Peter Cardinal Turkson as current head of the head the Vatican’s peace and justice office can still be delegated the responsibility to address that matter.

I just don’t want to spend the next two years watching the doomsday conspiracy theorists take over the media and panic the gullible the way they have for the past several years. Enough is enough.

Agreed. And you can scratch Bertone off the list for the same reason. We’re only a week into the pseudo-interegnum, and I’ve already had it with the Prophecy followers. enough already. Of course it is always hard to do away entirely with such nonsense, particularly since the manuscript leaves an inconvenient ambiguity that could be interpreted any of a hundred different ways to mean the doomsday Pope could be much later.

But at least if this Pope comes and the advocates have to twist themselves into knots to make anything even remotely fit, we can put this stuff where it belongs.

The problem we have with dissident groups has already started in that country. Proof of that is the enactment of anti-family legislation which was sponsored/supported by Catholics, in a predominantly Catholic country. That being the case, have those obdurate Catholic politicians been reprimanded? Worth noting that dissent in this country isn’t exclusive to Catholic politicians/laity.
I agree with you that the Reproductive Health Bill was a terrible piece of legislation that harms families, marriages and women rather than empowering them. I also apologise if I misunderstood you, but the tone of your question regarding whether the politicians were reprimanded also sounds a bit skeptical. I would like to inform you that the entire Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines - bless their courage - did more than just ā€˜reprimand’. They were collectively the architects and leaders of the campaign to oppose the bill, calling upon all their resources and influence among the people to put a stop to it, even floating the possibility of excommunicating the president himself. So yes, they are very orthodox, Cardinal Tagle included.

That being said, I have never said that churches in Asia do not face issues with dissident Catholics. Anti-family ideologies and liberal Catholics are a problem everywhere. The existence of the Reproductive Health Bill is proof of that. However, I have already said that that the challenges being faced by the Philippines are not the same as what Call To Action is trying to impose in the UK, which are same-sex marriage and female ordinations.

Further to that, I have already shown that Cardinal Tagle has expressed his clear and strident opposition to such anti-family ideologies as the funding of contraception and abortifacients, which - whether you agree or not - are considered ā€˜less major’ issues to most lukewarm Catholics compared to radical ideologies like female ordination and same-sex marriage, so obviously it would daft to think that Cardinal Tagle could somehow be compared to Call To Action.

These reasons are why it is completely misplaced to believe that Cardinal Tagle tacitly supports Call To Action or similar groups because both of them happen to use the same word (ā€˜listening’) to describe the future direction of the Church. šŸ™‚

šŸ™‚ Indeed. Do we imagine the pope might be heterodox? If so, then I have a couple documents from Vatican I to show you… šŸ˜‰
I’m sorry, but this is quite silly. Are there not reams of papal history in which a person could find example after example that exposes this sort of commentary as naive? That former popes have been heterodox is without doubt and beyond all question; and it is far easier to compose a list of utterly depraved Bishops of Rome than it is to form a list of uncontested ex Cathedra papal statements.

…
We are familiar with the Bishops’ campaign and had hoped that they would go further with positive action more than just. ā€œfloating the possibilityā€¦ā€. That being the case, the impression they give is that they are no different to what is demonstrated over here. And, it is worth noting that dissent is at its infancy in the Philippines and it will be naive to believe that support for artificial contraception does not springboard into the issues which we face with Call to Action. Also, I understand perfectly well what Cardinal Tagle implies. We already suffer the results of a ā€œlisteningā€ Church over here

I get what you’re saying, but I sincerely hope these alleged prophesies play absolutely no role in the conclave whatsoever – one way or the other (and I suspect they won’t). I’m sure the cardinals will elect whoever they fell is the best man for the job, regardless of whether or not his name is Peter.

Thanks for this link. I thought this was particularly interesting:

**On the plus side, many cardinals have said they’d like a pope with a global vision, sensitive to the church outside the West where two-thirds of Catholics today live. O’Malley has a Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese literature, and has long experience of ministering to both Hispanics and Haitians. He worked in Chile as a priest, and served as the Bishop of St. Thomas in the Caribbean. He’s deeply attached to many of the devotions popular at the Catholic grassroots across the developing world.

O’Malley has at least a basic command of Italian, seen by most as a prerequisite for serving as the Bishop of Rome**.

It seems like he brings experience in the developing world, a command of the languages and apparently was tapped to clean up the sex abuse mess left by his predecessor. It’s interesting to learn about these Cardinals, one of whom will be the Pope.

I heard this morning that while Malachi was a real figure the prophecies are fakes and written long after his death. (Priest on Seize the Day). He said this doesn’t stop conspiracy theoriests who then claim that they are called fakes because the Vatican is afraid that once we realize they are true it will impact the conclave. IMO total baloney but given the standards of the media these days I’m not surprised this silly issue keeps getting ink.

This might have already been posted, but has anybody seen this? A bookmaker has given the various Papabile odds and you can bet on them
Short Turkson.

That may be true ā€œsmaneckā€, but I feel sure that ā€œScienceā€ will consider itself fully informed on the subject after the Resurrection.

And without a doubt Cardinal Tagle will be the next pope .
Good heavens!!! God forgive us for all the politicking over the Papacy…

For all the eight years that Pope Benedict XVI has steered the barque of St Peter, moored it to authentic Catholic spirituality and taught us how to BE Catholic, it is with utter disbelief to come across a statement which grieves against the Holy Spirit.

I agree. We have been so blessed with a Holy Father who is truly, as he said upon election, ā€œA humble servant in the vineyard of the Lord.ā€ I will truly miss him no matter who is named Pope.
