Now they are leading into another song. It sounds like it’s in Spanish. They are trying really hard to represent various cultures, Now the song is in English. This song is rather boring.

The music for the Mass in Yankee Stadium is going to reflect the tradition of The Church. 🙂 This just in according to Father Neuhaus.

God is Great,
DCD
Yes, I just heard that myself. I’m a big Father Neuhaus fan, and I’m sure that what he said will be true. He didn’t refer specfically to the Mass in D.C., but he said this Mass would satisfy musically, spiritually, and traditionally. Do you know what time the Mass will be?

Now they have a Latin American type song. Hmmmm, they really are straining to be multicultural. I agree, it’s overdone. The ‘theme’ seems to be multiculturalism. It’s rather syrupy.

Now they have an opera sounding traditional sounding song. I think it’s in Latin.

I really question the artistic choice of throwing a hodgepodge of different styles like this together.

Now they have a real highbrow opera style piece. Very classical.

All I can say is, they get an ‘A’ for effort. Lots of clapping after this one.

Now The Holy Father is doing the concluding prayers. Now he is blessing some religious articles.

I have never been to a large Mass like this, so I have nothing to compare it to.

Now the Mass is ended. The Holy Father looks very nice and satisfied.

Frankly, I doubt if he’s as intolerant as some in this thread say. I’m sure he knows that Americans like to be creative and innovative.

I like the closing song. The rest of it was overly ambitious and eclectic.

The commentator says it’s an overpreening exersise in multiculturalism, probably not an entirely inaccurate analysis.

Yippee!! I read in the Breaking News thread that the Mass in DC will have much more appropos music. Thank God we won’t be embarrassed like this a second time. Looking forward to participating (via television). 😃

I don’t think anyone accused the Pope of being intolerant. Just that he finds that type of music distasteful and that during the loud and clanging parts he looked visibly uncomfortable.

How do we know that it was a distasteful musics for him yesterday? QUOTE]

Because you go to a bookstore or a library or the internet and you google ‘Benedict XVI and Sacred Music’ and then you read it.

Or his Autobiography.

Or even on this blog, we’ve had several passages from his writings.
I know I said I won’t be back to this thread but I need too. I have been thinking and digesting my thought a while ago am I wrong and I must admit I am wrong. I still believe their intention is good and I did go back and watched yesterday MASS and yes indeed I think the second song ( communion) is not appropriate. How could I miss that, caught in the moment I guess.

I really don’t want to disobey the truth and got me to think that anything that the Holy Father said is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Thank you janet_baker76 for waking me up. Yes I read his writing and I admit I was derailed for this two days. Drawn by my own intrepretation. Music of course it is music but we must not left the tradition behind. I suggest everybody need to read his writing before we say anything because remember anything He says is inspired by the Holy Spirit just as Peter and the rest of his successors inspired by the Holy Spirit.

This last Mass WAS in DC - tomorrows Mass is in NY - and I agree - less eclectism and showing off and more consistency!

1157 Song and music fulfill their function as signs in a manner all the more significant when they are "more closely connected . . . with the liturgical action,"22 according to three principal criteria: beauty expressive of prayer, the unanimous participation of the assembly at the designated moments, and the solemn character of the celebration. In this way they participate in the purpose of the liturgical words and actions: the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful:23

How I wept, deeply moved by your hymns, songs, and the voices that echoed through your Church! What emotion I experienced in them! Those sounds flowed into my ears distilling the truth in my heart. A feeling of devotion surged within me, and tears streamed down my face - tears that did me good.24

1158 The harmony of signs (song, music, words, and actions) is all the more expressive and fruitful when expressed in the cultural richness of the People of God who celebrate.25 Hence “religious singing by the faithful is to be intelligently fostered so that in devotions and sacred exercises as well as in liturgical services,” in conformity with the Church’s norms, “the voices of the faithful may be heard.” But "the texts intended to be sung must always be in conformity with Catholic doctrine. Indeed they should be drawn chiefly from the Sacred Scripture and from liturgical sources."26

Yes I heard a while ago on EWTN, they say it is going to be beautiful. I am not going to miss this.

1157 … and the solemn character of the celebration. In this way they participate in the purpose of the liturgical words and actions: the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful…

You nailed it, Aloysuisg! It was missing that solemn character of the Mass, one of the three principles.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Dominus Vobiscus

It’s too bad. That cathedral makes classic music sound positively grand. It’s a step closer to heaven and they missed the opportunity.

Maybe it will give the Pope a clear idea of what a large amount of Americans practice, thus helping him form an effective way of working with us?

lol - you’re welcome

I think I’ve taken this as far as I can go with it - enjoy Sunday’s mass

Seriously, the choirs sounded fantastic - thank YOU for your work Aloysiusg, it must have taken an incredible amount of time and effort. May God bless you all the more!

Dominus Vobicus!

I agree with this. I appreciate the time and effort that ALL put into the Mass, I just disagree with the appropriateness of the timing and choice of many of the songs, not the performance or genuine goodwill and sincerity of the singers.

Just want to say also, if knowing then what I know now, and I was offered a ticket to the Mass in DC, I would GO!! In a heartbeat, BUT I would bring earplugs so as to receive communion with the proper disposition.🙂

Oh I’m sorry I didn’t use your exact words 🤷 by saying “singing” instead of “take part in music”. I assumed that a choir member taking part in music at an event was actually singing the music, silly me.
Sorry; but you’re STILL taking it out of context…my question did not wonder why a Papal Choir Member would be proud of singing…OF COURSE they’d be proud of their singing…and we who hear their beautiful voices are proud FOR them…that is out of context…my question is why they’d be proud of taking part in music that specifically OFFENDS the Holy Father. I am trying to be clear; but you really don’t seem to understand my question.

Sorry, I thought he has only done ONE PAPAL MASS so far. I must have missed the PAPAL MASS held at the National Shrine, and other locations.
He did not celebrate Mass at the Shrine…He led Vespers.
