Park Police Tear Gas Peaceful Protesters To Clear Way For Trump Church Photo-Op

The article states that the area they wanted cleared was federally owned. On top of that it states that use of force should be used only if the protestors became violent:
When Barr arrived at Lafayette Square just after 6 p.m. in a scene that was captured on news cameras and elicited heckles from the large, peaceful crowd, the attorney general saw that the area had not been emptied, and told police to clear the area, the official said.
If federal law enforcement was met with resistance by the protesters, crowd control measures should be implemented, Barr had said, according to the official.

It also says that there is no evidence that happened:

“Barr had been told that police believed protestors were gathering rocks to throw at law enforcement, and while he was in the park, water bottles were thrown in his direction, the official said. CNN did not witness any water bottles being thrown at the attorney general. Camera footage shows him standing and watching the crowd for several minutes, flanked by a security detail and two senior department officials.”

Above I shared a link to footage of the area being cleared. There was no evidence in it that there was any violence in the crowd.

The Archbishop was right:

“Saint Pope John Paul II was an ardent defender of the rights and dignity of human beings. His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth. He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace,” the archbishop said in a statement.

Nice try. No cigar. I said nothing about Abp Gregory, as you know. Nor did he say what the Dem party evidently holds, which is that moving a crowd is worse than killing children. I very much doubt he would say that.

Did he know the crowd was told at 3:00 to leave? Did he know it was smoke, not tear gas? Evidently he was misled by the usual misleaders. Does he know the officers were getting things thrown at them?

Probably not.

Ridgerunner:
So, flawed man though Trump is, he seems more like a Catholic to me than Biden does.
Seriously?

I recall St. Paul murdering people for Communion.

It also says that there is no evidence that happened:
You’re reading what was planned before things reportedly got violent. What I quoted was the plans afterwords.

Another reporter is saying that the “tear gas” wasn’t tear gas at all:

No one else did either. But I, and many others did criticize Trump for gassing peaceful protestors for a photo op. You said:
Pretty small stuff compared to supporting abortion, wouldn’t you say?
Then you added:
Compared to your guy supporting the killing of children, this is nothing.
It seems that the Archbishop pretty seriously disagrees with you. This is most certainly something. You have the right to gas people for a photo op because you’re kind of anti-abortion (remember, Trump isn’t pro-life - among other things he supports abortion in cases of rape and incest).

Let’s see. Looks like Abp Gregory was lied to by the usual liars if, indeed, he really condemned the president for using tear gas for a photo op (which is doubtful in itself)

"a local news outlet in D.C. reported Tuesday that sources at the U.S. Park Police told them the park was cleared because some protesters were attacking police officers.

And while many critics claimed tear gas was used, the Park Police told WTOP it was smoke canisters that were deployed.

Later Tuesday, the Park Police went on the record to deny that tear gas was used, while also saying “violent protestors” began throwing projectiles including “bricks, frozen water bottles and caustic liquids” before officers dispersed the crowd."

Looks like the Knights of Columbus asked Trump to visit the shrine, which they support. Too bad Abp Gregory didn’t talk to them before condemning Trump going there, if he actually did.

Of course, it wasn’t gas. It was smoke the officers used because the crowd was throwing things at them.

But I do understand criticizing Trump, even when it’s fake, is more important than human life to some. Hard to understand that, but that’s the way it is nowadays.

Couldn’t agree more. I seems every debate comes down to abortion on these forums far too often. it’s used as a deflection tool in lieu of any real discussion constantly.

It is a bit crazy to read these things on a supposedly Catholic forum. Its perfectly fine to use force to throw a priest and seminarian out of their own church so that it can be used as a photo prop? A Catholic Archbishop strongly condemns those actions and Catholics just shrug? I guess it is true that politics is more important than religion to many posters here.

Here is a link to the Archbishop’s statement from the Archdiocese’s website:

Oh, I hadn’t heart THAT bit of news… Who forgets to tell us the whole story??? Thanks for reporting…

Death is fairly serious as things go.

Apparently the Archbishop was lied to, if he even said what he’s claimed to have said. A priest? This was an Episcopal church.

But I do understand that throwing things at police and security people is more important than standing up for religion to some. Was that Episcopal minister okay with the crowd setting the church on fire too, or was it only okay with her that officers got hit with rocks and bottles?

So, everyone is lying except for the Trump Administration? I linked you to the Archbishop’s statement, on his OWN website. He said it.

The Episcopal church has priests, you know. The priest says the crowd was peaceful.

So far you have taken up with Trump against both the clergy of the church involved, and against the Archbishop of DC. Is there some limit to your support for him?

Is there some limit to your support for him?
I think we are seeing here that in reality there isn’t.

The new line is that everything being reported is a lie (it took almost 24 hours for them to come up with that?).

Isn’t both using force to drive away peaceful people, including driving clergy away from their own church so that it can be used as a photo op?
Based on the report, these people were far from peaceful.

The rector of the church actually wasn’t that upset about the fire. He was grateful it wasn’t in an historic part of the church, but he knew that whoever started it didn’t represent the bulk the protesters.

According to the reverrend who was an eye witness to the event, water bottles were only thrown once the tear gas started. And I believe the reverend when she says it was tear gas. I’ve got no reason to have any confidence in the park police, especially after what they did to a group of peaceful protesters, all for the President’s photo op.
