This isn’t the 19th century where a deer has to provide a family with food for the winter. Odds are if they can afford ammunition they can afford food.

Now for poor people, that’s a different story.

There are a lot of families that do not have wealth so deer hunting is a way to help provide for their families.

High taxes and high heating costs so yes, deer meat is food.

I’m a leftist that lived in Wyoming for about 20 years. Many of those years, we hunted deer or elk for our winter meat as we were poor with small children plus the meat is very lean and healthy. We also hung and butchered it. I’ve killed, skinned, quartered and carried the meat out of the prairie as well. It’s hard work. I’m proud that all my kills were clean as well. All this is normal behavior for those living in the Wild West. Large city folk from back East just never grew up with that type of lifestyle so when they complain about the poor little deer, I tell them what happens if we don’t cull the herds. Starving deer aren’t a pretty sight either. It keeps the herds healthy and my license fees go towards wild life management. When all of this is explained, they will sometimes change their tune and sometimes not. Some people think meat comes from grocery stores so there’s not much I can do to further educate them…and they aren’t all Democrats, either!

Ted didn’t do anything wrong except post it. He should know better!

He can post it if he chooses. Let’s hope he donates it to a shelter or food kitchen.

I did include a disclaimer regarding poor families. And I’m not ‘big city folk from back East.’

Sorry, didn’t mean to imply you were…just telling about members of my own family as they are all eastern city slickers! :hugs:

Yes, most people that come to Wyoming to hunt game, many city boys and girls, will donate the meat to charities set up for it. They usually just want the trophy racks or heads…but us locals usually hunt for the meat and could care less how big the rack is…we prefer the younger more tender meat.

Have you ever had moose? It’s absolutely delicious. No gamey taste, tender and flavored very similar to beef. I never drew a moose permit so I never hunted them but would have loved to.

Ted Cruz should know that he would get heat for the photo so I assume he did it on purpose to get exactly the comments he did. Even I know better than that! I assume he’s more politically aware than I am…so, he did it for exactly that reason.

All good. Wasn’t really offended.:hugs:

I’ve just met so many hunters who really didn’t need to do what they did. I don’t really care if they do, it’s not my scene, but whatever. But the majority I’ve met were not poor people who needed the food for winter, even excluding the big city types who did it for sport.

Moose, you be in big trouble in New England because the herd has been decimated by winter ticks.

Don’t even say that!

Ted Cruz can post what he wants same as the man who posts the biggest bass fish. We all the price of fish. Down South they eat squirrel. Each to their own. We have wild turkeys and pheasants.

I agree that many do it for the love of hunting. As long as the meat doesn’t go to waste, it still helps to fund a lot of tourism and the parks/wildlife refuges. Sometimes, if the eastern city slickers don’t have a guide, they ruin the meat. I believe Wyoming corrected that by making out of state hunters require a guide…more jobs! The first people that will raise a big stink about mishandling and ruining the meat of a kill will be the hunters. They don’t want the meat wasted anymore than others do. Hunting in Wyoming is big business! We all want healthy herds and good opportunities to hunt whether for the poor or rich. Before I moved to Wyoming, I knew nothing about hunting and how beneficial it was. My husband is a native Wyomingites…I learned a lot from him and my hunter safety classes…not something typical of a nice ex Jewish girl from back East! 😂😂😂

They should visit the slaughterhouses to see where the meat comes from. I posted a video of that once and it was flagged and deleted and I was reprimanded for violating community standards.
More people are becoming vegans or vegetarians for various reasons.

I used to not be able to figure out why anyone would hunt and eat squirrel…in Wyoming they are those little gray ones. Down south, they are huge compared to the west…a bit more meat and worthy of eating! Quail still have me baffled…it takes about 14 of them to feed a family! 🤣🤣🤣

In terms of animal welfare, surely hunting animals in the wild must be the most humane way of sourcing meat. The deer lives a completely natural life in the wild, then you come along and kill it with one shot. That sounds a lot better for the animal than the methods used in a lot of modern farming, especially in the US, where animal welfare is less tightly regulated than in most of Europe.

Oh, I think they really know…it’s just a joke. No one should visit a slaughterhouse unless they aren’t squeamish around blood and guts. The old saying about don’t look at what goes into sausages if you want to keep eating it are true for many people. Most have just never seen or been involved in any way with how their food gets to the store…and many should stay ignorant of it.

My city has a huge slaughterhouse. I’ve visited it. It got shut down for a few weeks due to Covid violations but they straightened back out and are in full operation again. It’s grueling work for mediocre pay and many workers on the floor are immigrants hoping to work their way out of the place. No one really says, “This is what I want to do the rest of my life!”

Deer populations are fine and it’s common to see areas with overpopulation.

I’ve never hunted deer. Only rabbits at age 12-13 with adult family members.

I would never shoot a deer because I have no intention of eating one. I have never tried deer meat and don’t want to. That said, anyone who wants to hunt deer for food isn’t doing anything wrong as far as I’m concerned. I don’t care what their Financial State in life is.

Oh, and I’d wager most of those who are so angry Cruz killed a deer are fine with those who kill babies in the womb.

Deer are very pretty, but they’re a freaking nuisance.

I live in a suburb of a major city and the deer are everywhere including running around on our lawn. Sometimes one will stand in my driveway when I’m trying to leave for work.

But if I approach it, it runs away. 🙂

I hope you do realize as a self-proclaimed liberal that you do not speak for the majority of liberals who see deer or any animal as humans and are opposed to not only hunting but fishing and I won’t even get into trapping for pelts

Ted Cruz again can post a picture of a deer as long as he has a permit and has taken the deer during licensed hunting season…

He could post a picture of the deer even if he didnt have a license or killed it out of season or had killed it illegally in some other way. Peolle can voice objection or support for it, condemn or praise it, and express their opinion about it.
