Pope Benedict has his own perfume! The news article says he will be the only person to wear the scent. Think he’ll send out swatches and save us a trip to Rome for the holidays? Personally, I doubt it, but I must remember scripture about doubt. Matthew 14: 30-31, … Lord, save me!” 31. I remember some years ago when I first got my laptop computer and was surfing the 'Net, I saw something on the former ‘American Papist’ blog about ‘The Pope’s Cologne’.

The perfume is a good idea. It shows the world that Catholics need not be stoics. Jesus did not ask us to be stoic and refuse all pleasures and wonders of the natural, God created world. The perfume has a scent of nature, which is a wonderful thing to behold.

Now, of course a left wing Trotskyite rag like the Guardian or HuffPo will try to spin this into something negative. If the Holy Father is not blowing the budget on this, but probably getting it for free or from his allowance, I don’t see a problem.

I would hope that thus has been mis-reported. I agree with the posters who say this is scandalous. This is another example of tone-deaf PR on the part of the Vatican. If the pope wants to do something like this, I’m sure there is a vast array of existing products for him to choose from in the fine shops of Rome.

Cologne is not only used directly on the body for others to smell, but is used on things like sheets and linens, towels, furniture, in bathwater, etc. because the person themselves like the smell. Why does everyone assume that the pope buying cologne equals the pope trying to get scandalous attention by giving off an attractive smell? Would it be horrible if he had candles burning in his rooms of which he liked the smell? He’s pope, but that doesn’t mean he’s allowed no pleasure in anything.

EWTN’s “The World Over” with Arroyo reported on the report. Im guessing if they were unsure of it’s credibility they would have made that known. But based on how it was presented, they seem to think it’s a credible story.

He is also a secular priest (ie he has taken no vow of poverty). He is allowed to make money, and even spend it.

He has written prolifically over the years. A great deal of it goes to charity, but he does see revenue from it as well.

Did I say I thought it was inexpensive? My point is that him owning it leads to no other fact than he owns some custom-made cologne. It’s not a sin to own cologne, even if you’re a Pope.

As far as how expensive it is, no, I don’t know. Do you know? Really? Exactly how much it cost? Let me know. You don’t know how much it cost, if it was a gift (many times these kinds of things are, it’s free publicity for the maker), or if he actually paid for it (because last I checked the Pope was still allowed to have this own money).

I don’t know what the “average Catholic” has of anything, and I realize it’s important that he appear to be wise with his money. But I would want to know a little bit more about the situation before accusing the Pope of scandal. Especially when the info is coming from publications like the Huffington Post, because, you know, they’re so pro-Catholic. I’m thinking that maybe you could calm down and disregard the media spin. You’re reacting exactly how they want you to.

Exactly. We actually have several diocesan priests in our diocese who entered the seminary later in life and had high paying careers prior to becoming a priest. One worked in finance and the other was a doctor (a specialist). If you consider that they were single and worked these jobs for ten years or more, you’d think they’d have money saved up. And they do. There’s nothing wrong with that.

So I see it as a bad move from an image perspective, rather than a statement of the man’s underlying priorities or values. Remember, the Pope isn’t just a priest, he’s the Vicar of Christ, here on earth.

Well the Pope lives at the Vatican. You know JimR, if we sold it we could feed a lot of poor with that money. I’m sure guys like Bill Gates would buy up much of that Vatican art. Lots of money could be made.

Maybe your parishioners should help pay for your parish, u know. And if they can’t afford one, travel to a nearby one.

Austerity measures? Well the Pope just helped create work for some people by requesting this cologne. A newspaper sold more copies because of this story. This is all work.
It stimulated the economy.

The Church has preached against materialism and it is materialism and greed of governments, individuals and corporations - such as Goldman Sachs or Lehman Brothers which led to this mess.
