Do you remember what kind of movies were unapproved and why? My guess is that the Catholic authorities felt that many people would fall to the temptation of following bad examples from some characters, just like Eve and Adam fell to the temptation of the Serpent in the Garden of Eden.Well, that’s what my rabbi friend felt. He said that many Christians are woefully ignorant of genuine Jewish beliefs and customs (just as many Jews are also woefully ignorant of Christian beliefs and customs). He felt perhaps if my presence could educate Christians a bit, it would be well worth the while.
His only concern (if I’d been an uneducated Jew) was that I could be confused or led astray by some of the Christian understandings of our Scriptures (which, as you know, can often be quite different from our understanding of them.)
Basically, his concern was similar to the reason why Catholics for many years were forbidden from reading from a King James Version of the Bible—because it contained Protestant mistranslations (at least, as Catholics saw it.) Perhaps also why Catholics for many years were forbidden from watching unapproved movies, esp. those rated C for condemned (any Catholics here old enough to remember those days? My mom remembered them!)
