Philadelphia public school teacher worries about 'conservative' parents listening in on virtual classes

I had the same question then as I do now.
Exactly how is a condom on a banana going to stop AIDS?
At the time it got me sent to the principal.

Ah yes, I remember when I thought “That’s what she said,” was the epitome of humor.

We’re talking about material being taught in class. If parents should somehow not know about it, then I absolutely ask “why?” This is not about doctors talking with girls…this is about material taught in class.

Why is the teacher uncomfortable with “conservative” parents listening in? Unless of course they don’t want what they are “teaching” to be challenged.

Exactly this.

You can convince a teenager who is trying to differentiate from the parents of anything.

And if you can do this in private, where nobody with different evidence is allowed to present a more nuanced side, you can successfully socially influence the kid.

reminds me of my oldest son’s health class in high school about 12 years ago. They were teaching about global warming, but were providing a very one sided perspective. I sent the teacher an email stating that I had no issue with what they were teaching, but that they needed to provide contrasting viewpoints from respected scientists. The teacher decided to just not teach about global warming anymore. I found that very interesting…it seemed the teacher’s position was either they were going to teach what they wanted unchallenged, or they weren’t going to teach it at all.

No more than I usually do. And thanks for the tour. And the Assyrian burial monument.

This would infuriate me, but for a different reason than what many have expressed here. The time a student spends learning is short enough as it is. A teacher has no business wasting his students’ time by injecting his opinions, whether or not parents would agree with him. The teacher is hired to teach a given subject and that is what he should do. No more, no less.

Knowing more of Wilde, bio, than of his oeuvre, I hadn’t read that one, though I know of the cyclical attraction that Rome had on him. That one comes from his tour of Italy in 1875, when the draw was strong. Ellman quotes 4 lines from it in his bio, Part 1, chap.III.

Maybe the problem is more of the childrens’ reactions than the teacher. That’s the point I was making.

Maybe the teacher wanted to teach settled scientific theory rather than a political version of science.

actually, the idea of “settled scientific theory” is itself unscientific. Science is always in a state of learning. Einstein thought it was “settled” that the universe was eternal. Lemaitre proved to him it had a beginning. Lots of new science learned after a majority thought something was settled.

But we must remove politics from science and scientific reasoning. Conservatives refuse to do that.

You’re making assumptions without any information to back it up.

Tell me…what is my educational background?
Tell me…what were the issues I had with the teacher?
Tell me…what was the name of the respected scientist I suggested she consider?

You seem to the one with a preconceived bias…

Not me. I just go with the opinions of reputable scientists. Conservatives refuse to do so if it does not fit their purposes.

Who are these conservatives? How does that relate to the comment I made, which you challenged without having any information as to the what the teacher was teaching, and what my challenge was.

The family, since it is a society in its own original right, has the right freely to live its own domestic religious life under the guidance of parents. Parents, moreover, have the right to determine, in accordance with their own religious beliefs, the kind of religious education that their children are to receive. Government, in consequence, must acknowledge the right of parents to make a genuinely free choice of schools and of other means of education, and the use of this freedom of choice is not to be made a reason for imposing unjust burdens on parents, whether directly or indirectly. Besides, the right of parents are violated, if their children are forced to attend lessons or instructions which are not in agreement with their religious beliefs, or if a single system of education, from which all religious formation is excluded, is imposed upon all.

The family is prior to the state.

Because you taught “truth.” When speaking truth, you have nothing to hide or worry about. So the question is this: Why is the Philadelphia teacher worried…aren’t they teaching the truth?
Why when girls are over 12 do they have to talk with the doctor by themselves? Sometimes supervision can hinder discussion and openness.
My doctor never did this. Why would I trust some doctor alone with my teen daughter? After Nasser? I would trust virtually no one completely alone with a teen, sadly.

That is reasonable too.

The students should not have to put up with explicit “sex-talk” in this environment.

Not only does it destroy the child’s latancy period, but it is embarassing to the kids. Not only because of the teachers but because of their fellow students being present.

I am against “educational flashing” of such ideas to children.
Just like I am opposed to the sick physical “flashers”, that do this to children too.

Both are a form of child abuse.

Says the guy whose party spent the last few decades arguing whether life began at conception.

And who has members who support mandatory mask wearing in the privacy of one’s home.

Science?
