Mike WM. There isn’t a 3 mile anything in Stockwell. Its a very tight neighbourhood and no where in Stockwell is 3 miles from the tube. Its only just about a mile from Stockwell to Brixton (next station down line; and a mile from Stockwell to Oval (next station down). I know because I was a social worker in those parts for many years and I have walked down just about every street in the place. So, like you I am puzzled if the initial story of his walking out of premises in stockwell that were under surveillance, is true. At most it would be a short bus ride from some parts of Stockwell to the tube.

Clapham would be more like 3 miles but then, Clapham has three tube stations of its own so why travel to Stockwell ?

Ani, how nice to hear from you. Why only earlier on I had a call from Sir Ian to tell me what to do in the eventuality that I should be passing through a tube statiuon when Armed Police draw their weapons. [No, only kidding; this is British Irony on my part]

Advice and information are coming only via the media where words like ‘common-sense’ and ‘acting sensibly’ and ‘co-operating with police officers’ are being bandied about.

There are no rules that have been imparted to us mere citizens as yet although there is some pressure from politicians on the Police and Home Office to publish such rules of engagement quickly. We will see.

And yes, Brazil is pretty upset with Britain. Brazilian Ambassador on BBC Radio this morning throwing stones.

All I can say is that thank God I live in the only part of London which has no Tube system. God was so good to place all those water springs and underwater aquifers down here so the engineers couldn’t make tunnels!

Yes, indeed, now I think about it, this is rather odd. I have a friend who used to live on Clapham High Street, he used to use Stockwell all the time.

It seems he got on the bus at Tulse Hill, and the journey took about 15 minutes. I’ve no idea how far this is though, seems about 1 or 2 miles at a very quick look at google maps.

Gilliam says that the lad lived in Brixton, South London.

What’s Stockwell close to?
Cockney Clive:
Ani, how nice to hear from you.
D-oh! The pleasure is all mine.

Does this mean I have to take the bullseye off my jacket?

Are those sorts of instructions understood by most?

Really what kinds of things are being said?

Location, location, location. 😃

Some may recall that after the Rodney King beating the LAPD Police Chief, Gates, actually said – on national telelvision – that there should be a training program for citizens, to teach them how to behave when arrested.

Gotta love Gates; one of the forward thinker’s in the history of law enforcement.

To Cockney Clive, An Ibi, and Vern Humphrey:

Thank you all for your observations and insights into this tragic event. One cannot, IMO, fault the police for acting recklessly or with malice given the circumstances or the environment in which events transpired.

Having said that, it seems that both we and the British ought to be prepared for more events like this.

As long as our governments insist on policies which make terrorist acts such as this more likely, we are going to get more terrorism and more innocent people will be killed. Just my opinion.

Right. It’s OUR fault these murderous thugs exist. WE somehow created them. They would never have attacked us if we had simply surrendered to their reasonable demands.

I expected to find Catholic Apologists here, but not apologists for terrorism.

Fatal subway shooting wasn’t a “mistake”, its the RESULT of an illegal resident behaving suspiciously enough to draw the efforts of the legal police (whether in uniform or not) to apprehend him and his effort got him shot. End of story!
Let me hear some caring for the victims of the terrorists who caused this deplorable mess of anguish. Maybe the people who have entered countries illegally and are evading any authority that will expose them, will get a message that its not a safe status to occupy. As for anyone who is more than illegal and wishes to terrorize and kill, take warning - you will not end in a mistake but a RESULT!

I don’t see what was reckless or malicious about the police’s actions. Can you explain?

**Last I read his Work Visa for USA was rejected but he had a VISA for UK…so where was he illegal? **
*Menezes’ father, Matuzinho, **said his son selected Britain because he got a work visa there after being rejected by the United States. **The father warned his son that it might be dangerous living in England, but Menezes told relatives in his first visit back to Brazil last summer that he was happy, working hard, had friends and felt safe. *miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/12214435.htm

He did have a visa for the UK. A student visa which expired after 18 months and which was not renewed.

Oh ok…guess UK then also has the same issues with keeping track of VISA holders as the USA.

gilliam:
I don’t know of that being particularly dangerous in the UK
Neither did I…perhaps you are trying to imply something else though

The guy’s immigration status is unclear. The UK foreign minister has said he believed he was here perfectly legally, but it still doesn’t seem entirely sure.

I don’t see it makes a vast amount of difference either way, really.

Mike

Dear Karin - it matters if he was an illegal resident because that was motivation for him to suspiciously run from the police. See?
