It hasn’t been derailed, the thread is about a poll showing many Americans **think **Obama is a Muslim. Since there’s nothing to discuss regarding Obama’s actual religion (since it’s just a fact that he is not a Muslim), the only logical route this thread would take is discussing how and why so many Americans have come to think this.
As a Muslim why would you think there is anything wrong with people considering Obama Muslim? If I were to say Obama is a vegetarian and it turned out it wasn’t true people would not be accusing me of try to smear him, would they?

"Mystery solved! Why Americans think president is Muslim
‘Obama bears the lion’s share of the responsibility for any confusion’

His campaign blamed “shameful, shadowy attackers.” The media actually blamed the media (and human nature). But the only person to blame for the surprising number of Americans who think the president is a Muslim is Barack Hussein Obama. "…

Anyon see the Today Show yesterday. From what I understand he appeared and discussed this openly as a topic yesterday?

Absolutely.

I’m guessing he thinks it’s wrong to call Obama a Muslim because he is not a Muslim. Just that simple. No analogy needed.
The original question is why are so many Americans misinformed.

But why would people considering Obama a Muslim upset anyone?

It’s wrong because the people pushing the idea of Obama being a Muslim are not doing so innocently; they are dangerous far-right demagogues who say Obama is part of a sinister Muslim plot to conquer the US; while depicting Muslims as all-powerful evil connivers who can’t be trusted (parallels with early 20th Century anti-semitism are there) and who (with the help of their underhand influence over the government) use ‘our freedoms’ to destroy us from within, and so the only way to save the country is to take away their freedoms.

I’m only concerned by this because of the potential consequences it has for American Muslims and the US in general; the people who push such conspiracies afterall don’t really hate Muslims, they’re just using them as a scapegoat to scare people into giving them the power to take away people’s rights, and once you give people that kind of power pretty soon they’ll be using it against everyone. I have no interest in protecting Obama, who I have a very low opinion of.

If there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a Muslim then why would it be a problem if you push it- innocently or not?

If he is a Muslim, (it’s of course irrelevant to the Office of the President of the United States, which has no bar against that, but was still a bit disingenouous to the voters), then he’s not a very observant one. I would think that if he practiced his faith at all, that by now at least one meeting might of been interrupted, or some aide, or secret service, or congressman, or page, or somebody would have seen him during one of his 5 times daily prayers to Allah while prostrating and facing Mecca, si no? Just saying.

I have no beef with Moslems. I’ve got some problems with elements of their faith, as I’m sure they have with mine, and I have some definite problems with their extremists, but hey, good Moslems have problems with their extremists as well. Most that I’ve known or spoken to anyway in the U.S… I just wish that nobody would lie about their faith.

Of course, being a Catholic Christian with orthodox values and a hopefully genuine submission to the Church on issues of faith and morality, I’d love for a politician to become President who shared those views, and was guided by them in their decision making. Then at least I’d have a pretty good insight as to how things would go confronted with most situations. If nobody knows or understands what guides a President’s moral and ethical compass, or it’s simply the platform of some political party, then you don’t really have much idea.

We’ll never have a sincere Catholic President in this country. The ones in politics have this partitioning in their minds, and think it’s cool to be able to implement heretical ideas for the masses, because it’s the popular or (small d) democratic think to do. I guess that’s how it’s supposed to be around these parts, but we can still hope dream and try to elect an orthodox guided Christian, or even Anglican, or orthodox Orthdox. Something. We did have Jimmy Carter who was fairly religious, and GW Bush, but they had other problems, and presidents still must deal with a congress that’s hostile to orthodoxy of any stripe. Modernism, and an irrational faith in man over God has caused the worst case of relativistic groupthink since the reformation.

Or, I could just be venting some frustration at my election choices every couple years. In which case, just move on. Nothing to see here.

😉

God’s blessings on all his children,

Steven

On the other hand, how can anyone who knows the foundation of this country and the magnificent benefits that have accrued from this system, actively support socialism and call its detractors (of socialism) (meaning us conservatives) un-American?
That’s just the thing… a lot of people hardly know anything about the foundation of this country and how unique we are compared to others. In their minds, they take for granted everything we have and assume it just falls into everybody’s laps normally.

I just answered that question read my post again.

There’s also Pamela Geller who’s all over the American media on this story. She also seems to be a fan of English neo-fascists (the ‘English Defence League’), best known for causing anti-Muslim riots up and down the country (although they once attacked a Hindu Temple mistaking it for Mosque).
I ask you again-why would anybody care if somebody referred to them as something there is absolutely nothing wrong with being? Why should Obama or anybody who supports him care if people think he’s a Muslim?

This is ridiculous, you asked that question already and I answered it at length yet you just repeat the same question pretending I haven’t given you an answer. Either that or you’re suffering from a severe brain disorder. I’m not responding to you again while you behave like this.

Do you think there’s something wrong with being a Muslim? Shouldn’t Muslims be pleased people think Obama was a Muslim. It would appear to me that those reacting with outrage over the suggestion Obama is a Muslim are buying into negative stereotypes of Muslims.

There IS something terribly wrong with someone possibly being a stealth candidate, Bob. BO's hostility toward Netanyahu, and the covering of Christian symbolism at Georgetown before a Presidential speech there make me ill. This guy is either Muslim, OR he shares the hatred of Christianity that radical Muslims do. :bighanky: Rob

I understand why people who think Muslims are out to do us harm would be upset if Obama was a Muslim but what what I can’t understand is why those who say that Muslims are benign would care in the least if somebody thought Obama was a Muslim

I remember thinking about this at the time it occured. I looked at the stage and saw the different posssibility of camera angles and thought that the last thing Obama needs now is to have an IHS over his head. The right wiing media was articulating the messiah message. Maybe the public relations people saw the same thing I did.
The choice you are giving is a false choice.
