I would enjoy a debate regarding married priests, and birth control, but nothing further.
It is a misconception for Catholics like you regard more progressive Catholics as “cafeteria” ones.
Oh pick and chose like a sweety shop ? well they can debate all they like, the Pope will have the final say !

I agree, Micheal Voris talked about this on Mic’ed Up and mentioned this poll. He said
the majority polled, went to church WEEKLY.
I’m getting more and more interested in hearing from this person. He seems to talk my language. Is that on the internet?

While I know many here dispute such polls because they don’t distinguish between levels of practice among Catholics. And I personally believe there’s no chance of a liberal pope considering the current make up of the College of Cardinals. As many of the conservatives were elevated to the College during JP2 and Benedict’s papacies.

But according to this CBS News/NY Times poll, “As the College of Cardinals descends on Rome this week to select the world’s next pope, most U.S. Catholics want the new pope to be younger, to have new ideas, and to liberalize the church’s teachings on issues like birth control, ordaining women, and permitting priests to marry”

Yeah, many Catholics really just want a non-Catholic Pope. My favorite take on the subject (from some Lutherans via Fr. Z): wdtprs.com/blog/2013/02/another-amusing-video-on-choosing-a-new-pope-this-one-is-from-funny-lutherans/

The Cardinals pray that God will guide them in the election of the new pope. God knows who will be good for the church and will answer their prayers accordingly.

Well, em, maybe the birth control issue.
I think the Church will take into consideration that they would prefer having long happy married young couples than divorced ones brought by friction due to an early child. Also, young couples may not have yet be able to provide for the future of their child.
God bless!
I have no satistics back this statement up with, only personal knowledge, and experience. Every catholic I have known that follows the churches teaching on birth control have had long and very loving marriages, they tend to depend on each other more than your average secular marriage. just an observation.

I’m a U.S. Catholic and I want the Pope that the Holy Spirit wants.
Quick, somebody poll me. 🙂

When it comes to understanding the office of Pope, Penn Jillette *gets it *and he’s an atheist. Piers Morgan dosen’t get it and he claims to be Catholic.
I offer this as proof:

Don’t you wonder how many people in the liberal world who claim to be catholic’s really are. It would seem that to get ahead in politics, show business, or television you have to be a catholic who is against every teaching of the church, but say you go to church weekly. I never see them in my church.

Seems to be de rigeur for a certain demographic to ‘demand’ a new Pope who won’t be, well, at all Catholic.

I think most U.S Catholics who are polled are greatly uneducated and believe that the Church is a democracy and if we exert enough pressure, we can change the truth into whatever we want…

This ain’t the presidential elections, folks!

This exposes how poorly so many Catholics understand the Truths and Teachings of our faith. This isn’t a democracy, conservative vs. liberal.

Great find!

I would say that Penn has something in him that likes to solve puzzles; he is a thinker. He obviously has an orthodox understanding of the Church, even if he doesn’t worship.

Morgan is a typical media blowhard who likes to wine and get his way, and would rather offer his opinion than do a little basic research.

Although there are probably a number of people who just need to be catechized (and would then change the way they believe), I also think there are an equal number of people who would still believe the way they believe even if you told them exactly what the Church teaches. I think we often excuse the American dissent as ignorance of the Faith and I’m not convinced that is always the case (I’m not even convinced that is even the majority of the cases).
Indeed. They have been catechized, all right. But in false doctrine. We have a half -Arian church with a significant no. of Arian clergy and laity who have devoted their lives to spreading what they think the true faith. Compounding this, they have driven an unknown number of sincere persons into the hands of the evangelicals. Karl Barth’s treatise on Romans, in which he shows the effect of liberalism on the reformed churches, is useful in measuring the disenchantment of many Catholics with the liberal reforms that followed Vatican II.

By their fruits, you shall know them.

Check out the diocese which have had traditional bishops who have worked to foster a renewal of the liturgy and catechesis and compare them to those who have not taken these steps. Also, compare parishes within a particular diocese between those who have good solid catechesis and a sense of sacred in the liturgy and those who do not. Then, look at the number of vocations to the priesthood or to be consecrated religious. Take a look at Mass attendance and the average age of those at Mass.

If you do all of that, you will see quite soon that this poll is completely wrong. The diocese and parishes who have stronger Mass attendance and the ones who are fostering vocations are those who are going in exactly the opposite direction as this poll suggests. They are preaching the truth, they provide faithful catechesis, and they are working towards a sense of the sacred in the liturgy. The diocese and parishes who are dying out, have few vocations, no young families, etc. are the ones who where modernity has run rampant and no one has yet stepped up to the plate to stop it.

Young people who are serious about their faith want the real deal. They don’t want watered down Catholicism which apologizes for the Gospel more than it proclaims it. There are many stories about this in the last year or so, when one takes the time to look beyond the secular media. patheos.com/blogs/badcatholic/2013/02/the-catholic-church-young-people-actually-want.html

By their fruits, indeed.

As for the rest, are we really surprised? Disobedience and pride has been popular since day 1. But here’s the thing, heresy doesn’t stop being wrong, just because it has become accepted. Its still heresy, and thus still wrong. No poll, vote, discussion, etc. is ever going to change that.

I agree. Since I’ve been a CAF member I’ve often seen on CAF people blaming dissent on ignorance or poor catechism and if only people were properly catechized. But I’m not convinced of it either. I think they overlook the concept of belief and faith and that people can actually be very knowlegeable and properly catechized.

In my life time we have gone from honoring and respect older people who may, and generally do have more knowledge and experience that younger people. Do we really wanted apope because he is younger. I didn’t realize we get dumber with age.

The polls can say whatever percent, the church is not a democracy to fit our likes, nor will the scriptures change which is what our teachings are based on. It seems as if we MUST be tolerant to anything and ‘be nice’ or we’re bigots and whatnot. ‘anarchism will tolerate a hundred heresies, but will not tolerate orthodoxy’ comes to mind.

That’s very interesting. Since the majority polled attend Mass weekly, that alone puts them in a relatively small percentage of Catholics who do so according to polls I’ve seen. What is it? Less than 30% or so of Baptized Catholics who practice enough to attend weekly?
