Abortion has nothing to do with liberal or conservative or libertarian or totalitarian; it is just plain immoral. And the Church now operates in a three (and arguably four) dimensional world; deal with it.
I have nothing to deal with except truth…The Church operates in one world, the world in which God created. It is the job of Mother Church to teach truth in every spectrum, disenters must deal with truth.

So looking at this poll data on the CBS web site. 56% of those surveyed (a little more than half) think the new Pope should continue opposing the death penalty and legalized abortion. 54% would like more liberal teachings, 62% would like to allow same-sex marriage.

In my opinion, the killing of the unborn or murder of another person is against God’s will, and it is clearly stated as such in scripture. It is also my opinion that scripture clearly states that a man is not to lay with another man, which would in turn forbid same-sex marriage because approving this marital status would be approving of the result of marriage, intercourse with ones spouse.

Looks like 4 to 5 out of 10 Catholics surveyed are Catholic in name only, and don’t even believe in two of the most basic fundamental tenants; protecting life and traditional marriage. And people wonder why the culture in our country has gone downhill so quickly over the past generation. If people who “believe in God” poll with these kinds of percentages, I sure wonder what those that don’t believe would poll.

Something would tell me that the Protestant/Evangelical wing of Christian Americans would not poll nearly as low on questions on same-sex marriage and protecting the life of the unborn. We are losing the war against evil…

Yes but one thing to note is that there are many what I call “ethnic” Catholics who were born and baptized as Catholics, maybe never went to Mass after their first Communion and just might show up Christmas and Easter. In my travels I’ve been astonished at the number of people who say well I was raised Catholic and still think of myself as Catholic…but you wouldn’t have a clue they were Catholic other than self identification.

I don’t think Evangelicals so self identify if they are not involved in their church anymore. OTOH if you asked the same questions of mainline and liberal Protestants you’d get answers far more liberal than these self identified Catholics. IOW saying “Protestants” agree with gay marriage or abortion depends almost entirely on whether they are from the liberal Mainlne faiths or the Bible based evangelical churches, many of which are “non-denominational” along with the better known Four Square and some of the conservative Baptists. Ask a bunch of Episcopalians and you’d probalby get 90% support for gay marriage and 80% support for abortion. But hey they recycle and drive electric cars so they are supporting life 😉

While I know many here dispute such polls because they don’t distinguish between levels of practice among Catholics. And I personally believe there’s no chance of a liberal pope considering the current make up of the College of Cardinals. As many of the conservatives were elevated to the College during JP2 and Benedict’s papacies.

But according to this CBS News/NY Times poll, “As the College of Cardinals descends on Rome this week to select the world’s next pope, most U.S. Catholics want the new pope to be younger, to have new ideas, and to liberalize the church’s teachings on issues like birth control, ordaining women, and permitting priests to marry”

LOL. They might as well have said they want the Pope to have two heads, be born on Melmac and/or Dagobah, and be able to fly. Most of what they want is impposible, which simply highlights their ignorance or hubris, the need for properly educating them in the faith, and the irrelevancy of their opinions until they known what they are talking about.

Well, “conservative” IS more liberal than “very conservative”, and 76 IS younger than 85!

Still though, think of the Catholics they poll. Probably most of them are people who see the inside of a church 2 or 3 times a year if they are lucky

“U.S. Catholics Want a Younger, More Liberal Pope.”

They got neither. 😛

Surprise! 😃

I am so glad!! Love our new Holy Father, Pope Francis! So humble, faithful to the teachings of the Church he the loves the poor.

Yes, and once again it was hilarious to watch MSNBC. Thankfully, George Weigel quickly disabused the typically overenthusiastic Chris Matthews from fantasizing that the Church is going Left doctrinally. Weigel corrected the imis(name removed by moderator)ression Matthews had that a Jesuit would necessarily bring the Church Left. Au contraire, said Weigel. As a Jewsuit, our new Pope has rejected the heterodoxy of some of his brothers and was quite clear about that.

Further, Weigel had to remind Matthews that this is a man very much in keeping with the JP2 Papcy of traditional Catholicism and a return to orthodoxy. (Matthews, typically, seemed suprrised by that.)

Regarding social justice:
I’m thrilled that he may begin to tackle that problem, particularly in Latin America, but everyone should be prepared for the fact that he and the gov’t of Argentina are oppositional, which I take as a very good thing.

So again:
An orthodox Pope regarding all doctrine, including but not limited to social justice. Plus, a man of God, as Weigel appropriately noted.

The one thing I will tip my hat to Matthews for was that I was waiting for someone to voice what I’ve been thinking since late morning: not just “the south.” The Western Hemisphere. I agree with Matthews that that is as important as “below the equator.”

Anything on where he stands vis a vis the liturgical reform?

God bless.

Don’t believe the poll is what I’d have to say. You will always see a great difference between people who are self-identified Catholics and those who practice their faith

I keep hearing this “begin to work on social justice” stuff and I am deeply confused by it. Since has the Church not been working on social justice with great urgency? Since when has the Church not been working for the poor?

I’m not trying to start a thing, and I am not trying to accuse you of anything (I have heard this sort of thing from more than one person in recent days), I am just confused.

Thoughts?

I have not heard anything yet, Paul, because EWTN’s coverage (which is where I would expect it to be, if anywhere) is on Encore mode from earlier today. The secular channels are more interested in “political” kinds of issues, less interested in “insider” stuff like liturgy.
🙂

That is one of my main questions at this point as well. I am actually considering calling in to EWTN live tonight and asking Fr. Mitch if he knows anything regarding Pope Francis’ thoughts on the liturgy.
