Well which life is more important? Those of the unborn of those of the living and suffering? Not a question I can answer but the problem that people have is that the perception is the Church is obsessed with gay marriage and contraception but doesn’t come out enough on other more pressing issues.
One other point that hasn’t been mentioned, is which of the “living and suffering” are having their lives directly–and legally–threatened? Only the unborn are targets of legalized murder.

The right to life is a prerequisite for other rights. Concern over food, shelter, comfort, etc are contingent upon the right to life. For what use is food if life is not protected? Or shelter? Or comfort?

As far as a younger Pope is concerned… I guess that’s just a preference.

If Americans want a ‘liberal’ Pope, I guess the Church is already as liberal as it can be.

As Catholics, we have two “Pillars of Faith;” as it were. We have the Sacred Scriptures, and we have the Sacred Tradition. Since a pope SHALL NOT go against God’s Word (Scripture) or God’s Tradition. That leaves very little wiggle room.

With homosexuality, we only need look at Romans 1:24-27. A clear condemnation of that behavior. Any Christian should see that the inerrant Word of God forbids this. How can the Pope change this? He does not have the authority to do so. There is also nothing in our Sacred Tradition that could be even loosely interpreted as condoning this devience. To condone it would be heresy. Anyone who would still condone homosexual behavior clearly does not believe that the Sacred Scriptures are the inspired Word of God.

Women Priests cannot happen, either. Jesus commissioned 12 Apostles (who were all men) in Matthew 10:1-4. Although Jesus had many disciples who were women, it is clear throughout the Gospel that Jesus only shared His authority with the Apostles (Scriptural Law). The Apostles, in turn, followed Jesus’s example and continued to only ordain men (Tradition). Again, the Pope is powerless to change this in any way. Women have many roles in the Church; parish councils, education, Eucharistic Ministers, Religious Life (Nuns), and a multitude of other ways to participate in the Church.

I honestly think that the number one reason people clammor for a ‘blessing’ of homosexuality, and the ordination of women, is because the Church has said that they can’t have it. They want to bend God’s law to their own will. They think the Pope can change God’s rules. Hardly. The Pope is a teacher, and a caretaker. He is not, nor has he ever been, God.

The Catholics who want these things do not know their Faith.

The Church has been acting out in the real world Matthew 25 since day one. Nothing will change here, there is nothing to change. What hopefully will change is the factions of the Church that forget about the “least among us”, the “least of my brethren”; those who cannot do anything what so ever to defend themselves; the unborn and the aged. There are none poorer than the child in the womb forgotten by his/her mother, none more hungry, none more in need of clothing, none more deserving of ours and God’s mercy.
Abortion is not a Catholic thing. Everyone should be opposed to it.

Thanks for clearing that up for us…:D:rolleyes::cool:

Not sure I get the purpose of your comment, but ok yes…we agree. Thanks.👍

Rail on you angry, frustrated and disillusioned people – you are to be pitied. Your earnest desire to change that which God has proclaimed is an irksome thing causing contention where there should be peace. You are a spoiled segment and if reports as to your numbers are to be believed, they do not matter at all for God has always known His faithful ones – His remnant from the beginning of time. We pray for you that you may be given eyes to see the ruin you desire and perpetrate. You would ravage the very thing that is your salvation just to satisfy the gluttony of your self-proclaimed intellect and subjective understanding. May God have mercy on those consumed with hubris who are utterly unable to see their demanding self which dares, in its blindness, to pit itself against the infinite wisdom.

sorry…stepping off my soap box now!

I think many people simply don’t understand the Roman Catholicism, and how she views these issues. Even if the Church went “liberal,” there would NEVER be a change on positions regarding ABCs, abortion, gay marriage, and females receiving Holy Orders.

LOL. That was absolutely eloquent, friend. 😃 Sounds like something from one of the great spiritual masters of the Middle Ages. Truly inspired.

(Or as contemporary-retro lingo would say, “Right on, Sister!” :D)

FYI: Your first sentence is my favorite.

I sometimes wonder why these American critics even want to be Catholic. They seem to hate all of what has sustained it for over 2000 years.

Bravo!! My sister, BRAVO!!! 👍👍👍👍

That is true but what happens is people see the church with an ultra obsession with gay marriage, contraception and abortion (granted all topics that have their own merit) yet they don’t come out, visibly, with the same fervor and passion on things like immigration reform, climate change, women’s rights (not reproductive), and for the poor. To many people those issues are more important or more pressing than it is whether or not we should use condoms or not.
Not that I am putting blame anywhere but at least in my town I don’t see any of our religious leaders (priests, bishop) standing with the ProLife Group protests or taking any stance on contraception or gay marriage (they are too afraid of offending anyone and losing $).

On behalf of myself only, as a member of the clergy responsible to preach all of the Gospel, that fact is embarrassing.😊

I am able to and do preach the truth on these subjects and so does my pastor. Guess what, the people thank us for preaching it!🙂

I just noticed you were from Houma, LA. My son is in the Coast Guard and was stationed in Houma for 3 years. He attended St. Pius X and loved it.

Sad but I think this may be a local issue. Not that yours is the only one but in this Archdiocese with a low number of Catholics and a VERY secular populace, our Priests and Bishops are very much outspoken and participate in ProLife activities (praying in front of abortion clinics, leading the Respect Life committees at Parishes). Our former Archbishop was VERY outspoken with respect to our Legislature which led the way on Euthanasia as well as being Pro Abortion. Further our former Governor who was raised in a Catholic home for orphans and claimed to be Catholic but supported not just Planned Parenthood but NARAL  the Archbiship called him out in public for supporting such merchants of death.

BTW what do you mean they will lose $$? Do you mean your Parishes will not tithe if the Priest speaks against abortion?

I am encouraged that Pope Francis went head to head with his country’s President on these issues. I suspect he will be very outspoken on life issues.

I have said often that older married men should be allowed to become Priest. But to think that allowing young men to become priest and then they could marry would somehow flood the seminaries to foolish.

As for birth control, the church does allow at least one form of it and it seems to be effective. As for condom and chemical solutions, condoms are not going to stop the spread of aids in africa. (That is the example that is always used to support the use) Why? Because the men that are not using them now, Are having sex with any young female they can get into bed. If they were having sex with just their wives, there wouldnt be an AIDS problem in Africa.

The pill caused auto abortions, so it has two evils attached. Murder is one that might happen and two, if your not married and having sex, that is the next.

Female Priest, never going to happen.

Yes - our parishes are always worried about offending its members not so much on the abortion issue but on contraception or really any moral subject.

We recently have a new bishop who I love already. He has visited soup kitchens and has been on prayer sites for victims of physical crimes where someone has died. And by his example we now have priests showing up to the prayer sites where they never came before. There is hope!!

Yes indeed. As to the contraception issue, I think if only more priests would simply EXPLAIN it, there would not be such hostility when the subject is brought up. OTOH the discomfort with the subject means that people know it’s wrong…but it’s so uh…easy to engage in this practice. Heavens Obama even makes it FREE!!! So most Catholics are barraged with promotion of ABC (probably pushed by the drug companies behind the scenes) and they don’t get any pushback from their Priest.

Happy to hear about your new Bishop! We have a wonderful and holy Archbishop and although he’s retiring, everything I hear about the new Archbishop makes me have even more hope

I guess they will have to be disappointed. With the exception of married priests, which is not likely to happen, the other things simply cannot happen, no matter how “liberal” the pope.
Sums it up perfectly. Married priests could conceivably happen, as it would be a change of discipline, not doctrine. Such a change is highly unlikely, however.

The other issues mentioned in this poll and by countless commentators on various news outlets are doctrine and will never change. It’s frustrating that these commentators and their superiors continue to try and demand that the teachings of the Catholic Church bend to suit their own agendas.

Anyone who “demands” anything from the Church should be on the Church’s ignore list.
