Obviously, I wasn’t clear in what I said.
I was talking about the political objectives for which MMGW is the foundational proposition. I wasn’t talking about abortion or profanation of marriage.
Addressing your practices as you name them, I think “making utility bills skyrocket” as a political objective (promised by Obama) exceeds what you’re talking about. I am aware parts of Spain are mild year-round. I am also aware parts of it are bitterly cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. I’m vaguely aware that in the central part, one could die without adequate heat in the winter. A much larger portion of the U.S. is deadly cold in the winter.
And is there really a lot of good sense in the U.S. government shutting down the coal industry, which is the world’s cleanest, when Germany burns increasing amounts of lignite to keep its industry running?
“Political MMGW” at least in the U.S. is, as I mentioned before, rather like Sharia. Very few people despise Islam as a religion, but almost no westerner wants to live under Sharia.

The pope should not be writing controversial political encyclicals. The Catechism already contains teaching regarding the responsibility of good stewardship regarding God’s gifts on earth.
He needs to stick to faith and morals. It is embarrassing and makes spreading the good news about the Church all the more difficult.

You see this “American denial attitude” because most Americans have lost interest in AGW because it hasn’t happened.
Industrial CO2 output by countries like China, Russia and India are increasing while the U.S. is showing marked reduction. Why are these countries not pressured into reducing their industrial products? After all, this is supposed to be a world-wide problem.

Granted, burning the forests emits CO2. But it’s also true the trees in the rain forests fall and rot, emitting CO2. It’s also true that if young trees grow up in the space, they absorb much more CO2 than did the mature trees they replaced.
All the same, it’s probably much wiser to judiciously harvest fully mature trees in rain forests and replant younger trees, but only if the mature trees are turned into things like furniture and building materials, and not just burned or left to rot. That is, if one is worried about CO2.

Thank you. Excellent point. All of this will get hashed out eventually - surely the encyclical is not Anti-American, but Anti-Americanism is really coming out of the woodwork.

The U.S. can’t even keep Russia from conquering its neighbors in Europe or keep China from building islands in international waters and claiming those waters. Why would anybody imagine any of those countries will impoverish themselves just because the U.S. seems determined to do it to itself? They must truly find it astonishing.

I might have come across that way about Ukraine on another thread but believe me that was more of an attack on Obama. I might have referenced past events but in the main he has been the most destructive President in US history.
The democrats seem to wallow in Anti American feeling. I really have no clue what their aim is but the sooner they get voted out for World stability the better

I think it will thin out the Church, and I think that is a good thing. We need to get rid of people in the Church who don’t understand what the Church teaches.
Using that logic, we didn’t need rerum novarum either. But the Church is richer because of that encyclical.
Like I said, it is time for division, not to make people feel good.

Well, I can certainly agree that people often exploit scientific concepts for political purposes or political capital. That does not in itself invalidate the science, however.
I have frequently seen people on this forum conflate MMGW with Marxism, neo-Malthusian population control and the culture of death. These are all separate concepts, such that while there undoubtedly are Marxist, Neo-Malthusian, pro-choice global warming activists, their adherence to these originally distinct ideas does not make them all of a piece and part of some elaborate, global leftist plot to create phony science so as to destroy the worldview of right-wing Americans.
There are plenty of scientists warning about MMGW who are politically conservative in their own countries and who are religious.
It is my perception, certainly basing it on my own experiences in various European countries, that over here there is a societal consensus or rather social conciousness that man-made global warming is a reality, hence why the overwhelming majority of scientists - even those working in the Vatican - subscribe too it. There is no political agenda that I can see in my neck of the woods.
