Does that mean we can ignore the Church’s scientific opinion about the Pill? Or when life begins?
We all have to self examine and seriously consider this encyclical.

I am making an educated guess that if this was declared infallible teaching that most on here that are now talking against it, would change their thinking and follow church teaching. I know I would. But it is not, so disagreement is allowed.

Do all liberals ignore what the church declares as an infallible teaching? Yet another attempt to ease ones conscience for supporting the pro death party.

There have only been two infallible teachings, both about Mary.

Pope Francis is not likely to take the risk of being proven wrong and humiliate the Church.
He just did. As the years progress with warming taking place and finally scientists have to admit they were wrong it will take generations for them to regain their credibility and when people criticize the church they will always mention Gallileo and the global warming fiasco.

Quite the opposite. It’s precisely the denialist attitude that may remind people of the Galileo affair – and thankfully the Pope has done the opposite, for he has embraced the concensus of the scientific community in order to promulgate a more responsible lifestyle, instead of issuing an encyclical at odds with the current-day science.

Perhaps you can add that to your list, since the Church is wrong about Galileo (btw, they didn’t dispute his science, just his theology) and the climate, they could be wrong about the beginning of life.

Encyclicals are how the Church helps us know how to live our faith, not what to believe.

The church doesn’t have a scientific opinion about the pill. It condemns contraception . If the pill did not provide contraception it would still be a sin to use it if the intent of using if the was to prevent inception.

One is allowed to disagree with the church on when life begins. They just are not allowed to support abortion at any stage of development , whether one considers the unborn child to be “life” or not .

In fact in this encyclical the Pote specifically stated the church was not going to try and settle matters of science. I am sure that those are invested in AGW will ignore this as they will ignore the Popes ringing condemnation of abortion and population control in the same encyclical As I am sure in the next election people will tell it’s perfectly okay to vote for Democrat nominee even though they support abortion, ,homosexual marriage and forcing businesses to provide abortificants to their employees because their opponent does not enthusiastically enough support AGW and they will use this in encyclical as justification to do so

Exactly. We called to protect God’s creation whether AGW is correct or not. There is nothing in this encyclical this says we have to support the tax and regulations schemes propose by warmists to mitigate this “problem” In fact there is nothing in this encyclical that binds a Catholic to support AGW as fact. AGW is not the focus of this encyclical- protection of the environment is. One could disbelieve AGW and still work to protect the environment.

2270 Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.72

This is true. On the other hand, there are those on the other side who claim that these tax and regulation schemes are socialism. That is equally as false as saying we must support tax and regulatory schemes. There is a lot of misinformation on both sides of this debate.

Agreed. . Under socialism there’s no need for taxes as the government controls all the means of production .

That’s not true. That Jesus is God is an infallible teaching. The resurrection is an infallible teaching. The true presence is an infallible teaching. In fact every doctrine of the church is an infallible teaching .

What you were speaking of is the fact that only twice has the Pope specifically spoken under the doctrine of infallibility and you are correct that both were used in reference to Mary, Immaculate Conception and the Assumption

You are trying to say that the Church’s teaching on abortion is not an infallible teaching?
No. I am saying encyclicals are how we are taught about the faith. Only two issues have had an ex-cathedra statement made. Other issues, just as true, are discussed in encyclicals. However, if one can say this encyclical is wrong, how are we to say that others can’t ignore other encyclicals.

We seem to be going in a circle. We can’t ignore teachings declared to be infallible.

So what is the purpose of an encyclical?
newadvent.org/cathen/05413a.htm

From the definition…

“As for the binding force of these documents it is generally admitted that the mere fact that the pope should have given to any of his utterances the form of an encyclical does not necessarily constitute it an ex-cathedra pronouncement and invest it with infallible authority. The degree in which the infallible magisterium of the Holy See is committed must be judged from the circumstances, and from the language used in the particular case.”

How do I know which is which? I am not a Church scholar.
