Well said my friend. To see a convert to the Catholic faith who is not willing to compromise is very encouraging in a way I cannot describe! Thank you! 🙂
No prob, thank you too 🙂

It’s encouraging to see other “conservative” faithful Catholics on here, too.

Um…I think by the standard of two very top leaders of your religion?

The pope doesn’t feel it’s good to judge people.
“Who am I to judge a gay person,” he said in July.

And Jesus doesn’t feel it’s good to judge people:
“Judge not, that you be not judged."
(Matthew 7:1)

But, naturally, you have free will. And even though you are a follower of both Jesus and the Pope, you don’t have to feel and do the same as they do.

But. If they teach “the full truth” and you don’t agree with what they are saying here about judgment and you say your perspective is still “right” because it’s what you yourself believe and feel to be true…is that not–gasp!–“moral relativism”?

🤷

.
Except that the first quote doesn’t show everything that Pope Francis said, and the scripture verse is about hypocrisy

The problem with the abortion issue is that, society doesn’t support marriage anymore, birth fathers have a right to interfere with a potential adoption and take the baby if the mother doesn’t want it. This backs the moms into a corner with abortion their only apparent recourse out of a sticky situation. Or single motherhood with a never ending tie to a possible total jerk.

I know single, unmarried moms who can’t move out of their county without permission from the courts. The FOB (father of baby) continuously disrupts their lives. Who can’t blame them for wanting an easy way out, since the FOB would also nix an adoption.

The abortion issue is a complex one. You just have to have compassion for people above all else and not demonize people
Spot on Country Gal. I like the real world examples you use for abortion and homosexuality. It brings the conversation down to earth and illustrates the difficult situations some people have to deal with. Showing compassion and understanding for people’s circumstances is **not **wrong. In fact it is exactly what Jesus commanded us to do. By understanding people and showing them love and compassion, you have a better chance of helping them than beating them over the head with cold dogma.

That’s what it sounds like to me.

So those of us who are conservative don’t also live in the real world? While you may be happy tonight, there are a lot of us out there who feel lost and borderline abandoned right now.

There is no good reason why a Papal interview should inspire headlines about the Church accepting abortion. It is inexcusable.
The Church is not embracing abortion. …and the media is not saying so. If you think beyond the deadly 3 perhaps you will return to Pope’s first beginnings when he said the Priests and Bishops need to go out among the people…when he chose not to live in tbe Papal Palace…when he cbose a reliable modest car…when the first feet he wasbed were women prisoners… all tbis has led up to what he said have become “obsessions”. Perhaps he believes change comes from “within”… Berating people never works…if you want Catholics to come home or bring new converts in. Scare tactics and guilt trips worked on uneducated immigrants during the early part of the last century. It doesn’t work in this century. This Pope is startiing from scratch. To teach as Jesus did.

Why, thanks! 🙂

I’ve been here a long time and read countless posts, but this one wins the prize.

What an insult to each and every pope, including Peter, in the Catholic Church.

Your post is a disgrace.
Jesus always said those that speak the truth will be hated.

I obviously was not alive during Peter’s papacy, so I do not know if he acted like Christ or not. All I know is that Benedict did not. JP2 was better, but I think Francis is the best pipe we have had in decades. Watch church membership skyrocket in the next few years.
Name me a Pope that didn’t believe in compassion. Name me a Pope that wore outlandishly flashy clothing. Name me a pope who didn’t focus on charity. You can’t.
Seriously? A gold hat isn’t flashy?

I’m sure Jesus wrote a hat just like that.

Don’t blame the media…because Francis isn’t as conservative as some of you thiink he should be. This is a Pope who lives in the “real world” with all it’s sham and drudgery…it’s still a beautiful world. He sees the hope and is not out there beating people over tbe head with Canon law.
Moral law is not canon law. Please learn the difference.

All I know is that my husband has worked in a major crime lab for twenty year and that the media does not put all the true details on the news of the rapes, murders, and crimes against children because people simply couldn’t handle it. If you knew what happens to the children born to some drug addicted, mentally ill, unfit parents you could not sleep at night. It is evil you cannot imagine.

The Pope is NOT condoning abortion he is simply focusing on things about are faith that need to be focused on also. Why do you continue to say things as you do, for shock value or to stir things up? That is what seems disturbing.

Read it people. Read it. I say it again, READ IT. It’s not the Holy Father’s fault that the media is going to twist what he has to say. They’re going to twist it no matter what. So should he be silent?
.
Perhaps better care should be taken to ensure that the twisting is kept to a minimum. I.e. don’t say words that are easily taken out of context and twisted.

Hmmm… I wonder what the Pope would think of the rules regarding discussions of clerics.

That said, it occurred to me that the Pope is well…divinely inspired. He addressed the holier than the Pope folks more focused on rules and regs than charity and invited back the fallen away.

If anything this Pope has reminded me of the TRUTH of the Catholic Church, I bet Benedict is bemused and in awe of the way God works; floored by the guy he ushered in with his unprecedented retirement. God is working, God is real, and MY GOD knows how to get in the headlines and into hearts. And to think Francis is only Pope because of the Pope once known as the Vatican’s pit bull, RETIRED. When do POPES RETIRE? Think about it. This is amazing.

FINAL WARNING

Before I start suspending and closing accounts I want to make this extremely clear:

If you make disparing remarks against Catholic clergy, your account is at risk.

Perhaps he is saying what the Holy Spirit gives him to say.

And where does that leave us who uphold 2000 years of doctrine and moral teachings? We’ve been hung out to dry.
Part of his message is that there is more to 2000 years of doctrine and moral teaching than abortion, homosexuality, and contraception. And that’s obviously an accurate message. It seems he’s simply speaking the Church’s truth.
Teach as Jesus did, and don’t cause media firestorm after media firestorm. Pope Francis has shown the world a beautiful Christ like image of humility. That cannot be denied, but the fact that after every interview he gives, people have to dig through his words to seek clarity isn’t good.
I’ve gotta disagree with you there – any time a pope’s words can cause a thread like this one to blow up so quickly and fervently, I think we’ve got a thought-provoking, challenging vicar on our hands.

I’m really sorry you’re feeling abandoned – but I truly think you’d feel better if you focused on this one word in his interview: balance. The pope is not in favor of abortion. But we’re called to be Christlike in many, many ways. Keep fighting the good fight against abortion – but understand when others fight the many other injustices that exist.
But. If they teach “the full truth” and you don’t agree with what they are saying here about judgment and you say your perspective is still “right” because it’s what you yourself believe and feel to be true…is that not–gasp!–“moral relativism”?

Ouch. And :yup:
Ask yourself: Why would that make you feel lost? It should have the *opposite *effect.
Gotta agree with that, too.

I don’t think the Pope need be a politician who worries about saying things that others may distort and take out of context. In being the preeminent voice of the Church, he is far removed from that ilk.

I got the feeling, when I left the Church a few years back, that the Church was retreating into itself and downsizing. It was to be only for the strict legalists, focusing on liturgical correctness, strict interpretation of Church edicts, and a legalistic approach to the faith.

Now I have hope again. No, I don’t support abortion. No, I don’t think homosexuals can have a real marriage. But, I think there’s so much more to the Catholic Church that these issues.

I’m saying, as an adoptee myself, that when I was surrendered for adoption, it was much simpler. 1) There was a severe social stigma attached to unwed motherhood 2) Abortion was illegal 3) FOBs could not interfere with the mother’s right to surrender her baby

All those factors encouraged adoption.

Today 1) Little stigma to single motherhood 2) Abortion readily available 3) FOBs can run interference in an adoption

This leaves most women with 2 choices, either keep the baby, or abort. In keeping the baby, you have a child born into a single parent home with all the disadvantages of that, and more strain on the social welfare system. The other obvious choice for women is to abort and hush the whole thing up, and not have to deal with ex-boyfriend and his witch of a mother for the rest of her life.
You’re right to a certain extent - have heard many testimonials about women recounting their experiences as an unwed mother and saying that their boyfriend was most adamant about getting the abortion. In many cases, the women’s parents are advocating abortion as well - there must be immense pressure to have the abortion in many cases. That should help us be compassionate toward women who have had abortions.

However, those factors do NOT minimize the moral gravity of the issue and the necessity to both do everything we can to stop the abortions and give the unborn the protection of the law. But we must communicate effectively - point out the moral issue while not condemning those who have made the wrong choice in difficult situations.

But there is so much confusion on this issue and I fear that this will add to the confusion.
