It astonishes me to see the gross misinterpretation of the Pope’s words by people from both the “left” and “right.”
I think that Cardinal Dolan put things in perspective very well:
“What he’s saying is that we have to think of a more effective way to do it, because if the church comes off as a scold, it’s counterproductive,” he said. “If the church comes off as a loving, embracing mother, who periodically has to correct her children, then we will be effective.” tinyurl.com/of4lzw6

This seems to boil down to what my mother used to say: “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”
