What do you think we are suppose to do with non-renewable energy? Save it and never use it. That’s the whole point of it. You use it up, it’s non-renewabel. It does no one any good sitting in the ground or in a museum. Oil runnin out. take look at the new oil formation in North Dakota. Biggest one yet. Oh no! oil is running out.
At this juncture, it's astonishing that people such as Fran cannot accept that the entire "enviro" movement is about power and robbing citizens blind. Follow the money! The people who ostensiby CARE, such as the Obots on Inauguration Day, and the Greenies on Earth Day, leave behind a cess pool in the Capitol area. The right to lifers and tea party folks, the "enemies" of the environment, leave the place spotless! Everything you hear is a scam to persuade the gullibe, "unwashed masses", which may make up a majority of Americans today, tragically. Rob :sad_yes:

burning crude oil to heat and power automobiles is just as resposible as burning firewood or coal or cow pies. Have any better ideas how to stay warm if Al Gore lowers the Earth’s temperature by 20 degrees?

We’re suppose to use the earth, it was given to humans to use. To keep warm, to build houses and animals to eat. Humans are not to succumb to dumb animals and trees, we are suppose to use them for are benefit. It’s the homosexuals and abortionist that turn people into things to be used and exterminated.

The fleet of humvees is doing more than producing CO2.
Certainly, but this topic is about climate change and whether it is a moral issue and the theory of global warming turns on the question of whether CO2 is the culprit.
They are consuming fuel that is non renewable. The US, like many other Western countries is an oil based economy. What do you think is going to happen to those economies when the oil runs short? What do you think happens to environmentally sensitive areas when oil drilling begins?
Whether good or bad things would happen in the situations you mention have nothing whatever to do with the question of whether CO2 is causing global warming. This is not an environmental issue; the issue is solely whether a specific scientific theory is correct or incorrect.
As you point out, this is not (just) about AGW.
No, I tried to point out that it is solely about AGW … which is why all the other environmental concerns should not be part of the discussion because they don’t deal with the specific question of the affects of increased CO2.
It is about stewardship of a finite planet. no one is asking you to wear a hair shirt, drive a donkey to market and live in a medieval agrarian society. What you are being asked to do by Pope Benedict amongst others is to think about how you spend your dollars and to consume responsibly and considerately. It’s not that hard!
If that is what the Pope is asking then it cannot be said that he has made any statement calling for action on climate change because none of the things you mentioned - while they may all be necessary (or not) - have anything to do with climate change.

It seems that we have been two different conversations. However, if Climate Change is anthropogenic (either wholly or partly) then those things are linked to Climate Change and it is a moral issue. It seems that there are posters here that cannot see past the bonnets of their SUVs to the wider issues and consequences of their lifestyle choices. That is a tragedy and you are all morally culpable. Just as Pope Benedict says.

Non renewable fuel is meant to be used so we’re using it… you’ve got to be kidding me! Global warming will mean no starving kids in Africa? That post has to be a poor taste joke. Get yourself an education.

I’m appalled and I’m out of here.

I had joined this conversation during its early stages, because I thought it was interesting. Then the tone began to get harsh, so I pulled away. I have come back to see how it’s going and what interesting ideas are being put on the table and I’m in amazement.

So many posters here have interesting insights and opinions. Many have opinions that are provocative. But there is one thing missing, good manners.

Is it possible for Chatholics to speak to each other as they would speak to Jesus, especially as we prepare to celebrate his birth? Even if someone accuses us of something that we’re not guilty of, we can respond in charity. We can ignore the accusation, if it does no harm to our good name.

If someone says that we’re wrong, we can ask for a clarification or we can gracefully show why we believe that our information is correct. When we are wrong, there is great humility in stating that we stand corrected.

When someone posts, it is charity to acknowledge the valid points in their post, not just select the ones with which we disagree. It may be the greater charity to tell the person what we admire about their post, before we point out what we find objectionable.

Climate change can never be before the perfection of charity. Let’s discuss this important topic with the wisdom of Solomon and the humility of Mary.

Have a Blessed Christmas!

I am sorry if I have posted anything uncharitable or been rude. The tone of my last post was harsh.

The issues are ones that I care passionately about. I would not speak that way in person. I guess that I need to take more care in my posts.

Thank you for reminding me JReducation.

God Bless

Once again you use the word if which reinforces my point: since we don’t know whether climate change is anthropogenic we cannot know what we should do. Since we don’t know what should be done there can be no question of morality since morality presumes there is a right choice and a wrong choice and that it is possible to distinguish which is which. That is not the case with regard to global warming therefore it cannot possibly be a moral issue.
It seems that there are posters here that cannot see past the bonnets of their SUVs to the wider issues and consequences of their lifestyle choices. That is a tragedy and you are all morally culpable. Just as Pope Benedict says.
There may be valid reasons to change our lifestyles based on “wider issues”. If that is so then make the case for it, but there is no case (yet) for doing so because of climate change since we do not know that our actions have any affect on the climate. Your arguments consistently revolve around fixing (perceived) problems other than “climate change” which may in fact need to be fixed; what I object to is being told we must make drastic changes to fix a problem that may not even exist.

I think we should all go to our parishes a light a candle for His Holiness’ intention.

The reason that Americans have larger cars is due to larger families. One unintended consequence of a country going greev and squeezing one’s personal space to a minimal footprint is to squeeze the possibility of children out of your life.

To the point that this is a moral question then, the greater morality is with those who do not follow the global warming agenda. One must leave oneself open to the possibility of new life, and the green agenda has no room for such possibility. The green agenda in fact poses such behavior, and the technology that allows such behavior, as being immoral. When SUV’s are posited as immoral, as has been done here, then so to must the children which rely on SUV’s to transport them to the soccer games and dance practices be immoral.

Smart cars may be moral according to the adherents of the the climate change crowd, but they lack even roof racks to strap the toddlers to.

What will be the unintended consequences then of the papal intention for action on climate change? If he is truly jumping on the bandwagon against SUV’s, then what will happen to the children?

There is nothing greener than the childless families of Ratzinger’s native Europe. Is that the kind of world he is now advocating for the rest of us?

Fran, you are appalled b/c people are telling you that you and millions of others are victims of believing a massive HOAX. The truth may hurt, but it should be reason for celebration. More polar bears will NOT drown! Merry Christmas! Rob :D

P.S. Fran, you are obviously a very kind lady. It kills me when people of good will are conned by those who wish to fleece them. God bless!

On the other hand, many Inuit and First Nations people of the Canadian North will be robbed of dignity as their livelihood in the recreational polar bear hunts dries up. Just like the moral do-gooders robbed the Inuit of a livelihood by spreading the lie that the cute little seals were being endangered by hunters, so too now doesthe myth that polar bears are unsustainable due to global warming rob the natives in the North of the ability to guide southern hunters.
Government policies of the south, using bad science, are destroying any economic bright spots that there may be for the natives of the Canadian north.
Southern environmentalists and do-gooders may think that they have the interests of northerners at heart by following the global warming and environmental agenda. The reality is actually quite different.
