Yes, I second that. I mean, if we’re talking 2nd or 3rd world countries that are say exclusively Muslim, I’d bet neither the women NOR the men in Catholic communities would have much opportunity for ‘chairing committees’. But I was checking around and Googling “Peru” (not a 1st world country), and seeing documented articles in say the Register (this site’s ‘parent’) speaking of various lay organizations and women doing just exactly what LD says they are NOT doing outside the great big wonderful 1st world, so I’m wondering where he or she is getting these claims FROM.

Sorry I’m not saying there needs to be a male majority. I mean when it comes to choosing between an alter boy or alter girl, the boy should get the position. Being an alter boy is the stepping stone to becoming a priest, the majority of priests have served as alter boys. Since there is a severe priest shortage, we should focus on encouraging boys to be alter servers, because having girls alter serving won’t fix this shortage.

How you came up with this based on what I posted is beyond me.

It seemed like your general tone was diminishing the role of women in the Church over the past 2000 years because you felt that they were not in positions of public prestige within the Church’s hierarchy.

There is no difference in God’s eyes between the value of religious men and women.

A nun is worthy of great respect. She devotes her life to God and provides great service to the world.

Just because she might not be on EWTN’s Vatican News every evening does not mean that nun isn’t making a real difference in the world.

A soul can be in heaven long before the church canonizes it. Theresa of Avila was a Doctor of the Church in God’s eyes long before the church recognized it.

We should be encouraging young women to fill the convents once again. Thinking of their contributions as being scullery maids does not help the church. It sells them as short as would thinking of your parish priest as a stable boy.

I’m addressing the topic of the thread and how things have change in the Church over the course of history.

Women today seek a bigger share of decision making within the Church and Pope Francis is listening.

This upsets people because they fear that women will be ordained to the priesthood.

Jim

Women are never going to be priests as men are never going to be mother superiors of convents.

Each has their own vocations.

One is not greater than the other.

As long as they don’t interfere with one or the other, where is the problem?

Circumstances like Mother Mary Anne Blondin endured should never be repeated.

Are you really saying that there are so few sufficiently capable, competent women in the whole of Canada that Trudeau can’t possibly recruit the required (low) number from among them without automatically having a drop in.quality?

You seem to think it can’t be a both/and situation here. And are probably underestimating the quality of the female.candidates and/or overestimating the generally not especially impressive males who have usually been chosen. THAT (the notion that you can have a gender balance without suffering in quality) is probably what he meant by ‘it’s 2015’

I’m not about finding the most competent men or women, I’m about finding the most competent people, regardless of gender.

Because his response to why his cabinet was 50% women was “because it’s 2015.” not “because they were the most competent people for the position.”

So you think it’s OK to just assume that the female members of his Cabinet aren’t qualified because you don’t like the way he phrased something? did you even read LilyM’s response to you?

No, I’m arguing against the idea of appointing female members to the cabinet just for the sake of having women on the cabinet.

Well, women are, at least in the West, getting the same or more.in the way of formal education than men, so on that score are equally or more.highly qualified.

Having fewer children, and making more use.of childcare, so the old interruptions in working life are happening less. And by the way both men and women are changing jobs much more often, and employers have much less of a need for enployees who will stick around for decades. So ‘you’ll be leaving to have kids’ is getting to be a non-issue.

So what exactly do you think women are lacking, compared to men, that it shouldn’t be the norm to have an equal or near equal split?

I’d bring up the fact that Mitt Romney has binders full of women, but I don’t think that would be helpful to the situation. 😉

Not everyone with formal education is competent enough to fulfill such a roll.
