Says the Spanish daily, Hoy:
Lejarraga wrote to the pope last year, saying he had been “marginalized” by church officials in the city of Plasencia in the Estremadura region. A practicing Catholic, he said local clergy had rebuffed him and said one parish priest had called him “the devil’s daughter.”
It was then Lejarraga reportedly wrote to Francis, hoping he could explain to the pope transgender issues and even possibly receive a papal blessing.
“After hearing him on many occasions, I felt that he would listen to me,” Lejarraga told Hoy.

Hoy reported Francis phoned Lejarraga twice in December, and during the second phone call, invited him to come visit at the Vatican. A date was arranged for the meeting.
According to Hoy, Francis told Lejarraga in an initial phone call that God loves all his children “as they are.” He went on: “You are a son of God and the Church loves you and accepts you as you are.”*
The message of hope reportedly bowled over Lejarraga. He was even more surprised when Francis invited him to come to the Vatican for a personal meeting and offered to pay for it.

You can accept a person and still not accept the behavior, which is what this paper appears to be leaving out. You can be kind to someone, and still disagree with a behavior. Please, try to understand that in the future.

Yes, Pope Francis is telling the truth: God loves all people as they are. The problem? A lack of policy changes, according to The Advocate.

Yes, exactly, “as they are”, before alterations. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and life is a gift from God. Pope Francis is truly loving and always has been. God probably understands all our wounds in need of spiritual healing though and waits for us to turn to Him hopefully before we do serious damage to ourselves. It is sad subject, actually, and I don’t think it should be a case for gloating or boasting that Pope Francis has said this or that as there are people who probably struggle with these sorts of things and it is hard for them, no doubt. Okay to make assessments, not okay to judge. Leave that to God. And Pope Francis would always mean well.

I don’t think friardchips is implying God loves people conditionally. “As they are” can also just mean that God is pleased with their bodies as He made them.

But seeing as you did, self mutilation is never good because it doesn’t just harm the person it sets an example to others that doing this is okay, as if to excuse the lack of consideration for said-person on the part of the person’s neighbours before they did what they did. Such is the case in a culture in which a lack of duty-of-care fails to support people with such troubles, the same society / culture that promotes abortion, euthanasia, genetically grown humans etc…because we are too lazy or messed up to tackle the real despair that is prevalent in our world, lying beneath the skin. But I agree with you: God is always waiting to heal, for us to turn back, no matter how far down the line.

The problem, I think, is that finding out what, exactly, transgendered rights means. If that means the right to love, respect, and freedom from discrimination in healthcare or the workplace then the Catholic Church should be on board. Every human is made in the image and likeness of God and must be treated accordingly. Transgendered rights, however, usually means something beyond that. Those are the kind of rights that Pope Francis might object to.

By this I mean that WE, as in ALL people, who are in fact ALL sinners - as it is only God who is good, and the saints in Heaven of course, thanks to His grace - are guilty of neglect in some way or other on a daily basis to some degree, or other. That is not to say that every single individual has made such turns of event come about directly, or ever agreed with such things, but that all of us can always do more, and even if we have done a fair amount to help, our ancestors at the least have let these things come about, because We - humanity - haven’t / hasn’t tackled the issue of love to our neighbour as well as we could have done over the years, and this is the result: a form of communism.

It is about looking at the bigger picture and reading behind the lines (and between them). If we look at each case only on an individual case-by-case basis then one cannot see what is the root cause. Stands to reason.
