Pope met with Kentucky clerk Kim Davis during his US trip, according to her lawyers

Regardless of whether it’s true, the way Pope Francis reaches out to people reminds me of all the criticism Mother Teresa received for the people she reached out to. They’re both indiscriminate in trying to love each individual. To heck with politics.

There’s an article about this in the British newspaper, The Guardian:
When the Guardian spoke to Staver last week, the activist and attorney said he knew the pope was “personally following the Kim Davis situation”. Asked how he knew, Staver replied: “I just know, trust me, I just know. He is very aware of it, and no doubt his comments [in his Congress address, about religious liberty] refer to that, and also Obamacare. These issues are certainly behind his comments.”
For now, the Vatican is not shedding any light on why the pope would have met Davis and why it would have chosen to keep the meeting secret, but Francis sought to avoid any meetings that could be interpreted as controversial during his trip to Cuba and the US. He declined, for example, to meet with Cuban dissidents.
The surprise news of the meeting will raise eyebrows within the Vatican bureaucracy – where press leaks can serve the interests of one faction or another – because it was revealed just days before a meeting of bishops to discuss issues related to the family.
The synod of bishops will pit conservative forces within the church against more progressive officials, who are trying to get the church to adopt a more lenient approach on issues concerning divorce and the treatment of children of gay couples.
If Francis was trying to portray an image of a pope that was floating above America’s culture wars, his apparent meeting with Davis puts him right back on the battleground.
Andrew Chesnut, a professor of religious studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, said the apparent meeting with Davis, coupled with his remarks on the plane, put the pope “squarely in the camp of conservative Christians in the US, both Catholic and Protestant, who believe their faith has been persecuted during the presidency of Obama”.
He added: “One of the great ironies is that Kim Davis’s Pentecostal faith has historically viewed Catholicism as an idolatrous abomination of Christianity. In the pope’s Latin America, one of the first things many Catholic converts to Pentecostalism do is to make a bonfire to incinerate their Catholic ‘idols’, such as the saints and Virgin Mary.”

The part at the end is especially interesting: “One of the great ironies is that Kim Davis’s Pentecostal faith has historically viewed Catholicism as an idolatrous abomination of Christianity. In the pope’s Latin America, one of the first things many Catholic converts to Pentecostalism do is to make a bonfire to incinerate their Catholic ‘idols’, such as the saints and Virgin Mary."

The fact that Kim Davis is Pentecostal and that the Pope would give her and her husband rosaries (something not used by Pentecostals) makes this story kind of fishy, too.

The cognitive dissonance on this from the political left is astounding.

I think the problem is that to the political left, politics is everything. They loved the Pope when he seemed to agree with some of their views on capital punishment, income inequality, global warming, and opening relations with Cuba. They cannot understand why this man whom they have embraced still speaks out against gay marriage, abortion, and the ordination of women, and why he speaks in favor of conscientious objectors.

The left (and probably the right) sees everything through an ideological prism.

The Church sees issues clearly, by comparing them with Christ’s teachings and examples. The Church is neither Left nor Right.

That can be hard to accept from both sides. I tend to a politically conservative stance on many issues, but the Church’s teachings on issues such as capital punishment have caused me to reconsider that. It’s been said that egotism is the hardest sin to break, and part of that is the belief that I must be right and the Church isn’t. Political beliefs are a good example of that.

The rosaries were for her parents who ARE Catholics.

He met with Fidel Castro. I hardly think he would avoid meeting a Pentrcostal especially when that person has been a prominent activist for a concern that the Pope strongly shares.

If the Pope strongly supports her cause, then why meet with Kim Davis in secret and then refuse to confirm the meeting afterwards? His meeting with Castro was not a secret.

This meeting by Pope Francis is a big deal. A close relative with a liberal mindset had his hopes dashed (he’s in favor of gay marriage) when he found out the story is legit. Needless to say he didn’t have much nice to say regarding the Pope or the Catholic Church - too vulgar to post here I’m afraid.

I am quite sure it is true, as several articles state they agreed to keep it secret “so as not to over shadow the rest of his visit.” They met on the day he spoke to congress. His visit is now over. I’m sure he knew full well she would eventually say what happened -human nature being what it is. And I’m quite sure he is not at all upset by the revelation, its how Pope Francis preaches without using words, his actions speak louder. Just like the meeting with the Little Sisters of the Poor. Her parents are Catholic. This is totally he style. Considering I’ve seen some crazy things on facebook about Pope Francis during his visit from the same protestant groups that hold Kim Davis in huge esteem -I think this is an added bonus. Maybe the Pope hasn’t started the New World Order at the UN after all…😉 If it didn’t happen I’m sure the Vatican would be stronger about its message than “we will not confirm or deny”. Why is everyone so upset is what I don’t understand.

But Kim Davis’ mother was raised Catholic which dulls the point a bit about Davis’ own views.

Vatican spokesman has confirmed:

Hopefully this experience will help her rediscover her Catholic faith (the article says her parents are Catholics, so I assume she was at some point).
“For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary.
For those who do not believe in God, no explanation is possible.”

The Vatican will likely keep a low profile, when the Holy Father met with the Little Sisters of the Poor, was one as skeptical?

Robert Moynihan of Inside the Vatican, who broke the story of the secret meeting, said that Vatican officials had privately confirmed that the encounter took place.
👍

Good link.

The story also has this explaining why she in Washington D.C.
…She had been visiting Washington at the time of the papal visit to receive an award from the Family Research Council.
The news that the Pope met with Davis sheds new light on a comment that he made to reporters during his return flight to Rome on September. Responding to a reproter’s question as to whether a government official can be a conscientious objector, the Pope said that conscientious objection “is a human right and if a government official is a human person, he has that right.” At the time, many reporters interpreted the Pope’s statement as a reference to Kim Davis. The knowledge that he had met with Davis, and offered her his encouragement, lends support that interpretation of his remark.

What scares me is that it is surprising. And the fact that it had to be so hushed.
Why all the secrecy and all the “private” confirmations (but no official public ones) and the refusals from the Vatican to confirm or deny? It all seems rather silly. 🤷
