VATICAN CITY (CNS) – God did not choose perfect people to form his church, but rather sinners who have experienced his love and forgiveness, Pope Francis said.
The Gospel of Luke’s account of Jesus forgiving the sinful woman shows how his actions went against the general mentality of his time, a way of thinking that saw a “clear separation” between the pure and impure, the pope said Aug. 9 during his weekly general audience.
“There were some scribes, those who believed they were perfect,” the pope said. “And I think about so many Catholics who think they are perfect and scorn others. This is sad.”

Hmmm… Maybe at least partially addresses to some members of this forum? 😉

It seems to me that the Pope is the one doing the despising, with his constant and very numerous insults of loyal Catholics.

I remember my daughter when she was 12 years old complaining to me that she thought I was expecting perfection from her. I told her no, that no one is perfect. What I expected was for her to know the rules and boundaries, and if she violated those things to take responsibility for it.

On this particular score, the Pope sounds like my 12 year old, no kidding.

I love Pope Francis. Reaching out to the sinners and tax collectors, and infuriating the Pharisees.

Yup. There is a large (?) group that only sees black and white, not shades of gray. Most things in this world are gray.

Hmmm I wonder what group I fit into. I know I try to be merciful and loving, but also know that I largely see things from a certain perspective.

Maybe that’s a question we all need to ask ourselves. Are we perfect, or are we trying to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect?

Maybe the Pope, being the ordained supreme leader of the Catholic Church, can see better through the eyes of a child asking why things are the way they are.

You should not be insulted by the pope giving a very Christlike message. He ate with sinners and admonished the “perfect Jews”, the Pharisees. He founded his Church on t very imperfect people: Peter denied him, Thomas doubted him, Judas betrayed him, and all of them abandoned him in the Garden.

The pope, perhaps mistakenly, assumes people know he speaks in the context of the Catechism…which is exactly the context for how all of his teachings should be taken.

The commandments of God are very black and white…our culpability is where there might be shades of gray.

Perhaps you did not mean to say there is no such thing as objective truth, but only relative truth. But this post might be taken that way.

There really is black and white, objectively.

This is how a Brother speaks about the Pope? Really?

Unfortunately, that is not what has happened. It is not the eyes of a child, but the immaturity of the child. The Pope routinely insults those who believe we should stay loyal to Church teaching and to anyone else to offers an opinion different than his.

I am not insulted by his message, per se. But, his reference to perfect people who despise images the over 100+ insults he gives to loyal Catholics, one of which is that they think they are perfect, which is not true, any more than it was true with my daughter. His speech was not just about what it said on the surface. He has a habit of making criticism and insults in both a in-you-face manner and in a subtle veiled manner.

Canon Law says the Faithful have a right to express concerns about their sacred pastors and to express those concerns publically. There are many concerns about Pope Francis that have been expressed by Cardinals, Bishops, priests, religious and the consecrated, and the laity.

By the way, St. Paul chastised Pope Peter and St.Catherine of Senna chastised the Pope in France to get himself back to Rome where he belongs, so there is precedent.

Yes you can see what he’s talking about right on this forum when liberals say ‘the Pope agrees with ME… your rigid. Your not pastoral and loving like I am!’

Sorry you feel so. If he is ordained by God to be his spokesperson and interpreter of Catholic tradition, maybe he was the sort of person the Church needs at this moment in time? Maybe things had gotten too legalistic in the prior 25+ years prior to him serving as an impediment towards bringing into or retaining people in the Church?

I second this.

It’s not fair to call those who simply ask for clarification on some of his more controversial documents “Pharisees.”

There’s a story in Luke’s Gospel about how some told Jesus about Pilate mingling the blood of certain Galileans with their sacrifices. The Lord replied, “Were these Galileans worse sinners than others? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will perish as they did!”

Lamenting evil and calling for repentance is good. Unfortunately some perceive this as Pharisaical. Unfortunately it seems our pope is one of those few.

I do not “feel so”. It is documented. No pope in history has been so insulting, especially to those who are loyal Catholics and do not deserve it, and also to anyone who disagrees with him.

None of this has been in magisterial documents, so being the interpreter of Catholic tradition is not happening. He says himself that most of this is just is own opinion.

The last 25 years has hardly been too legalistic. Not even close.
