Pope: World powers did nothing about Auschwitz

[Phil502]

Well yes, since Italy’s Mussolini was in bed with Hitler.

Yes that’s true and Argentina was sort of callaboraters with Germany. My point was made at Pope Francis personal connections, I had lots of family in WWII, I don’t like the armchair quarterback play.

You could, of course, lower the bomb load on the bombers and eek out more range, but then you’re increasing the probability you won’t hit the target.

There are always lots of inter-twining factors. It is a pointless exercise to be so specific with technical detail. If the allies wanted whole-heartedly to find a way to slow the Nazis in their antics then they could have done this. The art of distraction is also a useful weapon in war. Seemingly, the Nazis were given all the time in the world. The fact that extermination started early in the 1940s adds to the weight of suspicion.

Mary warned us at FATIMA that if they would not stop offending God, a much worse WAR would happen…and WW2 happened.

First there was the invasion of Poland…(Well, before that was the start of what became the Holocaust…) didn’t Poland only have a small army?

With the misinterpretation of the thing about weapons and Christians…how were they supposed to stop the transporting? The Nazis would have just killed them some other way…which would have been equally as bad.

[ARSpade]

We had forces deployed to Northern France, quite early. They were not used. We were very tentative. We could have deployed greater force to that area with the sole intention of bearing down on Germany. This would have been a massively reduced distance for allied planes.

Either way, we didn’t set out to free the Jews, and only where there is a will is there is a way.

By quite early you mean June 1944? Less than a year before the war ended? Oh, and we couldn’t move heavy bombers over because the logistical tail over the Normandy beach was barely large enough to support the land forces (hence the disagreements between Patton and Montgomery on strategy that lead to Market Garden), a problem that wasn’t solved for months.

War is logistics. Sometimes where there is a will there is a way, but 99.99% of the time it comes down to iron numbers and facts. You don’t will a B-24 300 miles more range.

And more range was what everybody always wanted.

[Good_Tidings]

Just my guess but I think he is getting ready to talk to the US congress.

That will be most interesting. Can’t wait to hear what he has to say.

[gracepoole]

Of course Italy was not on the side of the Allies. If saving the Jews (and Catholics, JW’s, gays, gypsies, the physically and mentally disabled, etc.) was one of the FDR administration’s priorities, they might have bombed the railroad tracks. Unfortunately, I don’t think it was a priority during the War. Defeating the Germans and the Japanese was the only priority. Jews, gays, and other groups were expendable to most government leaders at that time in history.

I’m not sure how bombing railroad tracks would have saved the Jews, etc. more quickly than winning the war did. The reason the Jews, etc. were in danger was because the Nazis were in power over much of Europe. Four years of strategic bombing by both the Brits and the Americans didn’t do anything to change that. It was getting troops over the Rhine and Oder rivers that finally stopped Nazi murdering.

The point is that if the Nazis couldn’t be stopped with one fell swoop, their murderous actions could have been greatly slowed. No trains running to Auschwitz = no active factory of death there for daily transports from occupied Europe. Allied bombing raids were not directed at camps, so it isn’t possible to claim that because these raids didn’t end the war, it was impossible to positively impact victims by targeting railways.

[Path_Finder]

In one article, the Pope allegedly says those who make weapons are not Christians, in another article, the headline is “Pope: World powers did nothing about Auschwitz”. That’s some food for thought for me.

[Mickey_Finn]

US POWs and Allied personnel were, in fact, murdered by the Nazis. And even more so by the Japanese.

Little was done about it because little could be done.

Hopefully we’ll give a better accounting of ourselves in the next world war.

[friardchips]

Mary warned us at FATIMA that if they would not stop offending God, a much worse WAR would happen…and WW2 happened.

If you are trying to suggest that our Creator made this happen then you are much mistaken. There are consequences of sin and complacency.

Not sure about that. Stripping people, including women and children, starving them until they were as thin as rakes, subjecting them to torture, public humiliation, doing ‘scientific’ operations on them while alive, and then making them believe they were all going to have showers but instead out came poisonous gas, having any gold teeth pulled out, then being slumped on mass heaps of bodies…

…you think this can be matched?!

[friardchips]

Hopefully we’ll give a better accounting of ourselves in the next world war.

Why does there have to be another war?!

Again…nothing major has been done against ISIS yet. This is exactly the problem: always war.

If we look at possible missions ahead, not as winning wars, but as the rescuing of innocent civilians, then government leaders might begin to find a way of putting one foot in front of the other as opposed to doing, seemingly, very little.

Exactly. Well said.

Before.

I have provided a timeline. There will be others, showing the deportation of Jews in progress, to be way before 1944.

historyplace.com/worldwar2/holocaust/timeline.html

• Wiki is useful as normally there are plenty of references to back up the info. given.

I have this really useful book about Britain and its accomplishments throughout history, going from caveman era to about the year 2000 and something. It obviously details info. about the war years, and it goes into a fair bit of detail to do with political ins and outs around that time, while also preserving the sheen of Britain’s proud victory over the nazis, and yet, no mention of the poor Jews. This extermination may not have happened in the U.K. but I think every book should, as a nod of solidarity at the very least, when mentioning the war in any respect, include mention of the Jews. For me, this stood out.

Everybody is aware of that.

My comment was directed at your statement that we had troops in Northern France. Which we did. In June 1944. And, as we all know, the deportation of Jews happened way before thta.

This is concerning that Pope Francis is contradicting himself.

First we read that weapons manufacturers and the investors can not call themselves Christians.

Then he says the allies should’ve bombed the train tracks that transported Jews, Christians and Homosexuals to death camps.

If everyone followed his first advice and stopped manufacturing weapons, how would they be able to bomb the tracks much less defeat Nazi Germany or in today’s world, ISIS or any other world tyrant who would slaughter innocent people ?

Weapons manufacturing doesn’t spring up the moment you need it.

Maybe I’m reading the Holy Father wrong, but the message being presented to the world is contradictory.

Apparently it is okay to purchase bombs and weapons payloads from un-Christian weapons manufacturers; you just can’t actually make them…

I wonder if I should speak to a Priest about my time spent working for Raytheon, as they manufacture the Tomahawk missile, among other munitions.

Auschwitz was in Poland, and therefore outside the range of Western bombers. Even if they did have the range, bombing the rail lines to Auschwitz means fewer bombs on tank factories, and rail lines are actually pretty easy to fix unlike factories.

That’s the point – the Allies made the choice to ignore railways to death camps in favor of bombing elsewhere. Of course, as many survivors of Auschwitz have testified, they would have been happy if the Allies had bombed Auschwitz directly – even if it had meant their own deaths. And finally, of course the Allies could have bombed in Poland. They had aerial photographs of Auschwitz, for example. How do you think they got these?

No, the point is that bombing the rails to Auschwitz or the other “death camps” would have done less to end the Holocaust than bombing other targets. If you’re goal is to end the Holocaust, the quickest way to end it is to defeat the Nazi regime, not to make symbolic attacks on rail lines.

On top of this was the fog of war. The allies consistently over-estimated the affects of the bombing attacks and how long it would take factories/facilities to be rebuilt and recover. Germans were much better at repairing/restoring facilities to operation and towards the end of the war, disbursing and camouflaging them. (Albert Speer’s “Inside the Third Reich” is a good read on that). So, the allies believed they were in fact doing more to shorten the war and get their forces into those areas by bombing production/labor centers.
