Pornography, why do men do this?

Kaily, I think everyone here has done a great job of explaining why men fall into pornography, but what I really got out of your post was how hurt you are. I know from experience that even truly understanding with our intellect that men don’t do this because of anything we have or haven’t done doesn’t always take that cutting pain away…

My ex-boyfriend (he’s discerning the religious life right now) was sexually active before he met me, and when I started dating him, I had no idea he had been heavily involved in porn as well. When he did tell me, I was extremely disturbed and disappointed, but I comforted myself that he wasn’t doing it while dating me. I asked him if he could promise me he would never do it, and he said yes. I was happy because I believed that I was beautiful and loved enough by him that he would have no problem staying away from that stuff. Well, a couple of months later, he called nearly in tears and told me he broke his promise. I was crushed, but I forgave him and didn’t tell him much of my feelings about it because I felt bad for him. He was so sorry and felt like a failure.

Well, part of my advice to you is this: Tell him in great detail just exactly how him looking at porn makes you feel. See, this kept on bothering me and building up, and I’d bring it up now and then, and eventually he got irritated that I couldn’t let it go. That hurt SO badly, that I spilled everything out to him. All of the pain and the way it makes me feel like I’m disgusting and worthless just came rushing out in a torrent of tears. I explained it so thoroughly that he was stunned, and he told me he really didn’t know it made me feel THAT horrible. It really left a huge impression on him, and he told me there was no way he could do it knowing it made me feel like that. Since then, he didn’t do it again (he would have told me if he did; he is the most honest person I know), and he really got into Theology of the Body. He was so happy with everything he learned, and he still thanks me today for his altered views on women and sexuality.
Thank you so much for this, you know exactly how I feel. We talked about it more last night, he has a really good filter and said it’s not something he always struggles with, but he does struggle with it. I told him how I felt, at first he was somewhat irritated with my feeling, but we talked more and worked things out better. We did go to a men of valor conference this weekend as well that was opened to men and women, so he is trying to overcome this. I’m trying to still get past this, I’m doing better and taking things to Christ and reading some Christian sites on this like Christopher West etc…

I was wondering, can men, even if they get past looking at porn on the internet and masturbation, will they ever get past looking at other women on the streets that they come in contact with? Is this something men will always struggle with or can it become completly overcome? I’m still feeling hurt, but I think it’s healing somewhat, although I still feel he struggles with having impure thoughts of other women and that still bothers me.

I want to follow up on that, though… Just because he stopped making that decision to look at porn does not mean that he doesn’t still struggle with lustful feelings now and then. See, I naively thought that he had perfect control over what or who he looked at and he could just decide not to be turned on by a passing girl’s revealing top…

However, he explained to me a few months after he stopped looking at porn for good that sometimes he’ll still catch himself fixated on a girl’s body and that he has to shake himself out of it as soon as he realizes it. While I think it is admirable that he makes the choice to shake himself out of it, for some reason, knowing that he would get fixated on some other girl’s body for any length of time still really hurt me. I get this almost physical feeling sweeping over my body of disgusting-ness and worthlessness, and it is so hard to make it go away. I don’t know if it affects you that drastically, but it made me feel really bad about myself, even also because I felt something was wrong with me for being that badly affected by it. I’m surrounded by girls who tell me that it doesn’t really bother them that much if their guys look at porn, and so I wonder sometimes if there is just something fundamentally wrong with me.

I’ve only found one thing that helps me with that. Nobody’s explanations help, only this: I picture myself holding my arms out to Jesus (or I do it physically, in bed at night) and I give myself completely, body and soul, to Him. I picture Him taking me in His arms and loving me so much that nothing else matters. Then I talk to Jesus and tell myself at the same time that God made me and He created my body exactly the way He wanted it–every minute detail. And He will never look at any other person and say, “That person looks a little better,” or “I like that person better,” because my relationship with Jesus is just Him and me–a complete, focused never-ending interaction between us. He never takes His eyes off my face.

If you do that, and do it often, it might just take most or all of that pain away. When you think of yourself as being Christ’s bride, and that your body (and soul) belongs entirely to Him, then you feel so beautiful and worth so much more than any guy could make you feel. Jesus’ love will make you feel whole and safe, and then you will be free to selflessly love the man that you know will let you down now and then because he is a sinner like all of us. Nothing anyone does has to have any effect on how you feel about or see yourself, because your worth is based entirely on God’s love. Nothing else!

But don’t rely on your mind to tell you this! Hug Jesus; cling to Him with all your might; sit in front of the tabernacle in silence and let Him fill you up with His love so you are ready to love and forgive anything. He loves nothing more than to tell you how much He loves you and how much you mean to Him… So ask Him constantly!

You are in my prayers.🙂
You know exactly how I feel, I feel the same way!! Thank you so much, it helps to talk to others who understand.

God Bless you my friend

It’s good to hear the two of you are working through this struggle.
I saw the above quote and felt like I needed to make a comment about it. Christina King talks about this sort of thing in a number of her talks. Try to seperate a man appreciating another woman’s beauty with his being physically attracted to her. Of course, there’s also the situation, especially these days, where some women dress in ways that it’s hard not to look - for men and women both. I think it would take a particularly strong will not to at least glance their way. But just because a man notices another woman doesn’t mean his love and attraction for you has suffered. It might be that he’ll see a woman, and realize that that woman doesn’t have something that he finds particularly attractive about you, and grow in his appreciation for you.

Attraction and love and everything else is pretty complicated. Just do your best to recognize his motives for these sorts of things. If the woman he’s glanced at is wearing a miniskirt and is showing her cleavage, I’d suggest helping him out by calling his attention back to you, or putting yourself between them, or turning him around somehow, and just let it go.

well, a man’s perspective on looking at other women’s bodies - I’m sure everybody has some really funny stories of his own. Here’s mine: once I had a young assistant fresh out of college, exactly the age of my niece. Every Tuesday and Thursday she would show up at the workplace dressed to kill - very revealing blouses, her belly button exposed, you get the picture. It was directed at some boy who would attend afternoon classes with her on those same days, she wanted to impress this guy. Nothing was directed to me, and I sincerely, honestly, never lusted for her as I essentially viewed her as my little sister or as my niece. Still, I felt very stupid and embarrassed every single time. You know, when you talk to people, you direct your glance towards them but not directly into their eyes, because that can be too formal. But with this girl dressed as she was, every know and then my glance would end up somewhere on her cleavage or belly button or other area. Thus, I changed my behavior and started looking towards the window while explaining her how to perform the next coupling of amino acid or washing step on the peptide-resin. Which was also less than ideal, me so rigidly looking out the window while talking to her, and all the while praying inside that she would finally put on the damn lab coat…

I have similar problems since I moved to Miami. Normally I would prefer to attend Mass at the Campus church, but I came to avoid it whenever possible b/c half of the female students wear tank tops, back-bareing clothes etc during Holy Mass, and it leaves me no other place to fix my gaze than the ceiling or the crucifix above the altar, and it gets tiring to concentrate during the whole time, not to remove your eyes from those only safe places. Same problem with the Catholic Church on South Beach, most of the time. Finally I found historic Gesu Church downtown, and there, I don’t know why, practically everybody wears modest and unrevealing clothes…

My room mate told me about a drunk customer at the resturant he works at hugging all the waitresses and copping a feel - right in front of his wife!

I’m so glad I could help you, Kaily.

You’re beautiful! God send you His comfort and love.

Careful with that kind of views. I hope you realise that they typically come from the same people who oppose the teachings of the Church, not from Catholic sources, let alone Catholic tradition? Man and woman are equally human. Even on the grounds of lay science, this can easily be proven.

Unless there’s something I’m missing, no. Masturbation is not like alcohol or tobacco that you can use or abuse, masturbation is always abuse. Giving up an addictive pleasure that isn’t good for your health could be a penance, but not doing something which is always bad couldn’t really. You can’t make a penance of not cheating and you can’t make a penance of not masturbating, either. I suppose a penance could include particular efforts directed into avoiding a particular sin, but not the lack of commission of that sin. It’s an obligation to endure.
Even when masturbation is an ingrained habit from child hood? I’ve discovered it innocently before I even knew there was a word or term associated with it. It was just a few years ago I even discovered it was sinful! I think with a habit that ingrained, it could be considered penance. As a catholic, I am obligated to do my best to quit but I’ve tried so hard to go cold turkey and after a few weeks it can become unbearable and I feel stressed and tense and it’s a very physical feeling too. Not neccesarily pain but it is uncomfortable. Coffee drinkers could relate to the same feeling Im sure but it is amplified with sexual addicts because of the levels of dopamine and other neuro chemicals released by the brain during sexual activities. Sexual addictions and habits are comparable on a scale with addictions to brain altering drugs like LSD, cocain, heroin, meth, ect because the same neuro chemicals are invovled with those drugs.

Most if not all men who are normal have these desires and hormones. Nature (God) made our bodies that way to encourage procreation in humans at a time when humans lived in tribes and groups ( stone age ) for those of you who believe in Evolution.
( Evolution isn’t contrary to the catholic faith so long as you believe God willed it to ultimately be us today )

Imagine if sex or anything sexual brought up feelings of pain or disgust, there wouldn’t be many humans today. Same with animals. Humans are not animals because God gave us the ability to control our desires and instincts but sexual ones are sometimes very powerful if ingrained habits. If someone did it once then yes it is probably very easy to not do it again vs. someone who’s been doing it for 15 years 12 of which they had no clue it was wrong. My CCD teaching as a kid and teenager never talked about sexuality or common mortal sins at all.

(took sexuality course and pyschology course at my university )

That’s why one of the very few things I admire about Islam is conservative covering with females. Imagine if attractive women in America dressed with covering ( by free choice of course ) I think it would really block out a lot of those wandering eyes. 😉

By the way what you were doing was natural as a guy, no need to feel guilt.

There is a difference between lust and attraction. Attraction is natural and normal and not wrong. After all attraction is responsible for bringing many spouses together for their first date or meeting or occasion in the first place! Not in all cases but most.

I know I wouldn’t be attracted or go chasing after a 500 pound women for my wife or desire to date her.

Beauty is only skin deep as I find intelligence twice as attractive as body type in my women.

For example I’m attracted to intelligence, humor, spontaneous fun behavior, good figure, good complexion, good health in women I want to start a relationship with.

Lust however is focused only on the physical attributes and is sort of tied in with attraction but still different.

Here is how I can differentiate when I am lusting and when I am just experiencing attraction.

If I see an attractive women and have thoughts of " Oh I want to see that *** or I’d **** any time " and fantasize about only doing those sexual things then that is lust plain and simple.

But if you get nervous or shy or constantly stare at someone or observe them and thoughts or sexual things are absent for the most part then that is innocent natural attraction.

Lust is sinful, attraction isn’t.

As far as looking at women who walk down the street, I’d say no. Certainly maybe there are some that do, but I’d say that is the exception and not the rule. I’d also say that most men would not want to leave the person they have a relationship with for that woman walking down the street. Can a lot of people not see a baby or a puppy with their rounded little nose and fat cheeks and not think “how cute?” I’d say it more or less hard wired in, granted if they are looking too long, I don’t see anything wrong on calling the guy on it.

As far as it bothing you, why exactly does it? I’m not asking for you to justify it, I’m just saying if you want to stregthen your relationship, you need to know what exactly bothers you about it.

I don’t know what to say to that, to be honest. In my experience, the problem of “taken” men looking at other women has been most unnerving. However, in my experience women have the “other men” as often as men have the “other women” problem. Women are annoyed when their men turn their heads after other men. But men suffer, most often quietly, when their women talk about handsome actors, protective and chivalrous male friends, perhaps some other such figures that I can’t name at the moment, or when they want to look pretty for other men. Women feel betrayed when men look. Men feel betrayed when women try to attract looks. I think the problem is by no means gender-specific.

What I’m trying to tell you is not that your problem doesn’t exist or that it isn’t important. It does exist and it is important. However, it is not as gender-specific as you think. Some things I’ve heard women say have sent my brains off the chimney. I’ve had a lot of “do all women… (insert a bad activity here)?” in my life. They’ve been very damaging but also very enlightening.

I would suggest looking past “men”, “all men” and so on, and concentrating on the problem as it is, as well as its social context. Don’t allow yourself to develop a grudge against men in general or you won’t be happy in a married life, nor in a celibate life even because in the latter case you will be better because you gave up on men as inferior creatures, feeling cheated out of a healthy married life that you normally should have.

Yes, I agree. It doesn’t have to be sexual. And I’ll be boring once again, but I’ll say that women look too.

I’d agree it’s not gender specific. It’s just that men and women can be annoying in different ways. Men tend to look at other women, get into porn, stay at the pub drinking with friends until late etc, while women tend to dress in ways to deliberately attract stares. Some of them enjoy a lot of guys giving them attention, calling them, e-mailing them, staying in their aura. The situation becomes impossible when you take a girl to some event, and all guys ogle her because of the way she is dressed, or she receives 5 phone calls from 3 different guys during a single evening. Or they talk out your finances and investment strategies, and I don’t know what else, with their girlfriends, and keep watching those immoral and boring soap operas…

I’ve read the Theology of the Body (okay, West talking about the TOB), but I still have issues with the integration of who nature tells us we are, and who the Church tells us we are.

For the survival of the species, men have testosterone that seems to make them want to make as many babies as possible. It’s all sex all the time for some men. It serves the purpose of populating the planet.

Women, on the other hand, seem programmed to be choosy, and to choose the right man at the right time to conceive. At times they can’t conceive, they are more focused on the tasks that keep the family healthy and well.

So, how does what we know is true from God about monogamy and fidelity fit into this seemingly contradictory information from nature?

I post this not to start an argument about men are just doing what they are programmed to do, but to really try to explain these two pieces of information.

This is just opinion, so if it’s totally wrong, don’t be mean about it 😊
I think you need to harken back to the days of polygamy. The purpose of having more than one wife was to build up the population. God knew about all of the persecution and trials the Jews would go through during their history, so building up the numbers was an important thing, otherwise they might have been wiped out of existance, or at least beaten down to a number too small to recover from.

Modern day, though, it translates into a cross to be borne by men. The distinction between ‘natural’ and ‘good’ needs to be made. We’re born with the capacity to sin, but that doesn’t make it right.

She didn’t ask about women. But I’ll guess I’ll say this, it’s always a good idea to try your best to identify with what the other person is going through. You may have to look at yourself, and see where your own faults are. We all have weaknesses in one area or another. In that way you may be able to understand the process of turning away from sin. Understanding that you may be better able to help the other – if he/she is willing to try. Chances are we will never be sin free this side of heaven, but the important thing is to not stop trying.

Exactly!

Men seem to have this God-given imperative (if I can say that without people freaking) to populate the earth.

The polygamy is gone, monogamy is acknowledged as the standard, but it seems that the “urges” are still there, even when the man is united with a woman he loves who loves him.

Some men just wallow in it and are almost lost causes.

I think men are made to “work correctly” all in all with a certain level of testosterone, so without it we would not be whole, but it is a burden.

Even when masturbation is an ingrained habit from child hood?
My point is that one is obligated not to sin and it can’t be a form of penance to do something you are obligated to do. Additional effort. Stricter observance. This kind of thing. Yes. But not just that one will not sin.
I think with a habit that ingrained, it could be considered penance.
A habit mitigates culpability but it doesn’t give entitlement. This means that just because a person has a bad habit, that person doesn’t have a right to do the sinful thing. A penance can involve doing something we aren’t otherwise obligated to do or perhaps giving up something we are entitled do, but not masturbating can’t be a form of penance, if you ask me.

The suffering endured in fighting the temptation can have a lot of redeeming power and perhaps as a penance for one’s sins, one could dedicate himself to faithfully rejecting temptations of masturbation and sticking fast to chastity. But by not masturbating one is merely not sinning, so “abstinence from masturbation” could not be a penance per se, although I think special efforts and focus could be.
As a catholic, I am obligated to do my best to quit
Exactly. The obligation already exists, so it’s not really a good matter for penance.
but I’ve tried so hard to go cold turkey and after a few weeks it can become unbearable and I feel stressed and tense and it’s a very physical feeling too. Yes, I know what you’re talking about. I’m single and I’m not exactly a dead fish. While I’ve never masturbated (which doesn’t mean I’m oh so great, I simply had a good family and frankly, it often feels like I’m getting a much better treatment from God than I deserve, in terms of not getting around to this or that sin), but sometimes being lonely can be felt physically, even though you want nothing to do with any kind or form of sexual fantasising. So you don’t think about sex, or even about women, but the pain or whatever you call it is there. Got to detach oneself from it, as concentrating on combating it will not do. It’s like with purely physical injury. If you stop thinking about it, it hurts less. Or when it’s cold. If you shiver and complain, it’s so cold it hurts. If you flex your chest and march on, it’s quite manageable. The point is not getting preocuppied with the thing that gives you so much trouble.

Yeah, the desires are natural, but what we do with them is our responsibility, including the possibility of sinning, and abstaining from sin isn’t really penance of the same kind as, say, giving alms or wearing a hair shirt or praying long into the night. However, penance can involve being extra nice to people, being extra diligent in our duties, being extra persistent and faithful in our suffering. So what you describe relates to penance in some way, but the decision not to masturbate is always a decision not to sin, not a decision to do penance.
Imagine if sex or anything sexual brought up feelings of pain or disgust, there wouldn’t be many humans today. Same with animals. Yes, but those habits being so hard, while that may reduce our culpability, it doesn’t give us rights. So by not masturbating, we aren’t giving up any right, nor are we doing anything more than our duty. However, as I said, extra effort, extra diligence, those things are very close to penance and perhaps they could be a form of penance in themselves. But not the mere fact of not masturbating.
She didn’t ask about women. But I’ll guess I’ll say this, it’s always a good idea to try your best to identify with what the other person is going through. All you say is true, but it is also important that not only men have this problem. From the Opening Poster’s words, I am a little worried that she might see porn or disordered sexuality as primarily or predominantly men’s problem, rather than women’s. That is not entirely true and I wouldn’t like the OP to grow firm in a conviction that while women are pure, men are porn addicts. I probably exaggerate a fair lot, but if I say this much, then maybe just a little will sink in.

Another depressing experience is this: when I go to the confessional the 100th time, confessing the same sin and promising not to sin again (whether about sexual purity or constantly being late or whatever). It made me wonder several years ago: am I a hypocrite, making a promise that I cannot keep, as my track record shows? A possible answer came in a movie (Roehmer: My night with Maud) where one character said, you must try and persevere where you failed previously, because tonight God just might send you the grace that will make you finally victorious and of which you were lacking previously. However if you are dating someone who struggles like this, and you are not married to him/her, you should really consider your options carefully. You are free not to marry this person, as Whatevergirl said. It is better not to make a promise (marriage vow) than to make it and break it.

Yes, I know what you’re talking about. I’m single and I’m not exactly a dead fish. While I’ve never masturbated (which doesn’t mean I’m oh so great, I simply had a good family and frankly, it often feels like I’m getting a much better treatment from God than I deserve, in terms of not getting around to this or that sin)…]
that’s awesome and incredibly encouraging to those of us who have struggled with sins of impurity. I have often (foolishly, since I can’t change the past) wished that I had never discovered this vice; and then I could look at it objectively and see how utterly ridiculous it is. But I take comfort in knowing that “all things work together for the good for those who love God” and see that for those of us who have fallen into sins of impurity, to repent, choose virtue and persevere in grace is a means to merit greater glory.

I was greatly hurt when my boyfriend, (who is a strong Christian) told me he still struggles with pornography. I knew that he used to, but I thought he overcame it. He informed me that this is still a major temptation for him and that he fell into looking at porn again on the internet, he doesn’t want to keep doing this and put a filter on his computer to block those sites and he has an accountability partner as well and prays and is trying to overcome this, but as his girlfriend, I must say this greatly hurt me.
Be glad he has done something to combat his addiction. Most men today seem to think there’s little wrong at all with pornography.
I don’t understand why men do this. (I know it is due to sin and our fallen nature), but it still hurts. It hurts me that he looks at other women in this way and I feel like I’m not good enough. I know that isn’t it, but I can’t stop thinking this way. He said he really struggles with this sin in particular. I hate it! Why do men do this, is there something wrong with me? Why do they feel a need to have so many women? Do they realize how much this hurts us? We’re not yet married and we both practice chastity and absistence. It just greatly bothers me, I’m praying for him that he will overcome this, just wanted to know any others who may struggle with this and how the women cope with this and their feeling when their husbands/boyfriends struggle with this sin and how they deal with it.
I’ve struggled with similar sins, not so much pornography as the Catechism defines it (which I generally find repulsive), but rather looking at sites containing “immodest” and almost - nude pictures.

Men vary incredibly, but one thing most men seem to have common, relative to women, is more purely physical desire for sex, set off and perhaps partially satisfied by visual stimuli. This is probably largely biological and also partly social in nature. Women (correct me if I’m wrong) generally desire sex in the context of a loving, affectionate relationship. “Having so many (women / partners)” is incompatible with this desire, but not with men’s desires. Given that it is so easy to please the lower appetite for sexual pleasure in our modern world through pornography, and the very fallen nature of the humanity in general, it really should be no surprise that men tend to use it as much as they do.

As to whether or not men realize how much they are hurting their wives and girlfriends, I think men are often so strongly overwhelmed by the temptation to sexual sin in the moment they give in that such less immediate issues are brushed off to the side.

I think the best thing for your boyfriend would be for him to go to confession, to receive the Eucharist, and to pray for chastity, particularly and most importantly in the moment of temptation. When I’m tempted by an impure thought, repeating the Hail Mary seems to work magic in getting rid of the temptation.
