Tell him if he wants to see you, he can come to Mass with you and your family, and then brunch afterwards! See how that goes over. Maybe he would enjoy it and see a better family life than what he has known!
The fact that you seem to be hiding this from your family concerns me.

If you don’t talk with him and let things be chances are you will be intimate with him pretty soon or break up. He might break up now too if you are firm on your religion and waiting until marriage. Unless motivated by religion no guy will choose to just wait for you unless he’s (hypothetically) madly in love with you. But if he is madly in love with you why isn’t he monogamous now? (you implied you two still date others).
I say you should tell him and then see what happens. But unless he is motivated he will not be monogamous with you and wait for you just for the sake of it since he stated very clearly he is an atheist.

If you barely know this guy, I don’t think you can really accurately gauge whether or not he is “very respectful of your beliefs”. Honestly, a guy who you aren’t even in a relationship with who already has roaming hands after two dates doesn’t sound very respectful to me.

In any case, if you plan to continue dating him, then yes, you should say something. Normally I’d advocate for waiting a bit, but since you’re already starting to be intimate you should tell him where your boundaries are. “Kind of hinting” is not going to get your point across. If you are mature enough to be involved with him physically as much as you already have, you are mature enough to let him know how far it’s ever going to get without a wedding ring.

This dude is just getting what he can, from someone who he knows is younger and perhaps is, or at least he hopes, a bit more naive than himself.

If, for whatever reason, you really like him and want to pursue this you can be upfront about your expectations. Have a courtship that does not have you two being alone; a chaperone or a family event.

‘everybody kills people these days! don’t place burdens on this girl with your unnessecary expectations!’

The Church has spoken clearly on this issue. To advise this girl to err from the path of the Church. is to advocate for her to sin.

To Emily, the OP, is there a place where you could meet Catholic guys? A different parish, a college Catholic group? To use an old-fashioned phrase, you are putting yourself in the near occasion of sin. Don’t do this to yourself.

Could you just get your own thread? No one is discussing the Counter-Reformation here.

I think you need to examine your own beliefs, and I mean no insult in that. I do it often.

If you’re “afraid” you’re going to give in, you probably will, if not to him, then to another man. You need to be stronger in your resolve against “giving in.”

And, as another poster has said, even if you don’t give in, if you become serious, the fact that you are a devoted Catholic and he’s a passionate atheist is simply a recipe for disaster and heartbreak.

End it.

Don’t disobey Christ (who has ruled through Peter) because of the actions of Judas. Both Scripture and Tradition are clear on this - I am unsure as to what you don’t understand.

I’m imagining the Cute Atheist Boy’s response: “Sure, baby, I know you’re Catholic. Whatever you say. Just come sit next to me and we’ll watch Netflix and chill for a while”…😂

Yep, he won’t get mad, laugh, or try to belittle you; that would be too easy for your break up with him. Of course he understands…(sarcasm).

Nope, he is just buying his time until you are too weak to say no.

And after she gives in, if, indeed, she would, she’d never hear from him again. He’d be off on a new conquest. Men have an awful name for that I cannot type here.

"My heart tells me to give him a chance, but my conscience is telling me to back off before I end up getting seriously hurt"

I can’t add much to all of the wonderful advice you’ve been given already in this thread. But the line above did strike me. One thing I’ve always instructed my kids is to trust your conscience. When it is formed correctly, as your seems to be, it is like that instinctual protector leading you to what is right. It is like the Holy Spirit quietly guiding you in the right direction.
God Bless You

I agree. Is it your heart speaking, or your hormones? If it were your heart, you would talk to him about Jesus, and church, right?
The problem in our society is that there is this Hollywood-style fantasy of “romance”. Sometimes lust and love are entangled! I think sheltered religious girls may not fully appreciate that!

I’m terrified of talking about this seriously with him, since he’s the first respectful and sweet guy I’ve had actual feelings for (I’ve had very, very bad previous romantic experiences).
In my opinion, the fact that you are terrified to tell him is a problem. When I told my now husband, I was not nervous AT ALL because I knew what kind of guy he was and because I figured that (not that I expected this to happen) if he couldn’t live with it, he was not the right man for me.

I think you’ve been moving too quickly with this guy you aren’t even in a relationship with, and assuming that you know him well enough to know that he is “respectful and sweet”. If you really knew that, you wouldn’t be scared to bring it up.

trying to keep this from being vulgar

I would expect him to think she will give in in about a month or so, maybe still be somewhat nice for a week or two then really be mean or break it off directly. He will/would still call back occasionally, in between other girlfriends.

The worst part is the girls continue to give in to the calls thinking he still cares or might be the one. Awful.

Thanks for telling it like it is. My husband tells me a lot about what absolute pigs young men can be. I’m very concerned for this young lady.

Also, Emily, do you know that this guy doesn’t have any STIs? (Sexually transmitted infections). You want to be careful even kissing him, honestly.
