Hi mercygate:

Something’s got to have changed…why would the Pope turn to Mary…instead of to Jesus, as the Apostles pointed the believers in the early church to do?
You keep insisting that Pope Benedict has turned to Our Lady “instead” of Jesus. If you were to read his book, Jesus of Nazareth, you might get some insight into his profound, personal relationship with Our Lord and how, for him, the personal interdigitates with the Body of Christ in the Church.

The doctrine of the Communion of Saints, taught by the Apostles, is part and parcel of the Christian faith. When the Apostles preached the Gospel, they pointed people not only to Jesus but “instead” to the community of believers, of whom Our Lady is foremost. It was through the community of believers that they were grafted into Christ through baptism. Even Paul received the Holy Spirit at the hands of the Church “instead” of from Jesus directly. The author of the letter to the Hebrews exhorts his hearers “not [to neglect] to meet together . . .” The Communion of Saints is the Body of Christ both on earth and in Heaven. It is not “instead” of Christ. One cannot love Christ without loving His Church. His family. His mother . . .

In the Apostolic age, the Apostles would have pointed believers to the Church, of whom Our Lady is also the mother, not “instead” of Jesus but as the place where Jesus can be most truly known.

I really am sorry if this has offended you mercygate.
It’s a bad habit that I’ve gotten into and it may take a few posts to break.
You cannot know what a relief that will be. Thank you very much.

again…perhaps the “needs” you are experiencing, are based on what you may be lacking in your relationship to the Lord. See my next quote below.

You really should work on **your own communion directly **with the Lord and place your faith in Him. He’s very approachable.

He’s interested in “you” and “your” relationship and communion with Him.
Do you really think he is interested in a relationship with me to the exclusion of all the rest? I worship him alone as God, but I don’t believe he wants me to isolate myself from communion with other believers.
Amen to that! Immerse yourself in the Gospels and the "gospel message that Jesus and the Apostles taught.
Thank you for taking the time to share this with me.
God Bless you!
I do. Every day. I also listen to the church he founded, his body here on earth. I also listen to those members of his body who are now in heaven.

God bless,
Ut

AshleyBelle:
You’re asking to whom would the apostles have pointed the pope to, Jesus or Mary?

You fail to understand, or perhaps to accept, that the pope, IS a successor OF the Apostles!

If you want to know whom the apostles would point to, ask the pope, and the bishops in union with him!

**Leeann: **
Are you yourself not in union with Him?
Can you yourself not go to Him and commune with Him and trust that He will allow and enable you to see His truth?

And If the catholic teaching has been made clear to you, then why do you still insist it MUST be an “either/or” question?

Because the Catholic teaching hasn’t been made clear to me.

It all comes down to authority…as with all these circular arguments between catholics and protestants. You agree, that at one point Christ established a church with His apostles. Of all the churches in the world today, are there ANY besides the catholic church which can prove or have any sort of historical basis for a line of succession extending ALL the way back to the apostles? If you say no, then how do you know truth, and how will you EVER know what the apostles taught about the “gospel message?” or anything else?

Because the “truth” doesn’t lie in an historical representation of names that is “claimed” by a church to be authentic and presented by “them”….it lies in what they teach and how they teach it and if it measures up to the same gospel that Jesus and the Apostles preached and taught.
The “truth” doesn’t bind believers up in rituals and dogmas that have no relation or resemblance to what the early church represented. Jesus was against the Jewish rituals and practices that kept the people “bound” and unable to have a “personal relationship” with God. Jesus came to set them/us free from all that…to be able to worship in spirit and have communion with Him…in a very real and personal way, so that we can trust in HIM, have faith in HIM first and foremost…the church is His body, His body of all true and faithful believers of the “gospel message”, wherever they may worship…He knows His sheep and they know His voice and will follow Him.

If you say it’s because we can all read scripture, I’d have to disagree, because that is a notion developed only in the past 500 years. How many people were even LITERATE 500 years ago, let alone could access the scriptures? 200 years ago…how many people were literate to read the scriptures? Who do we trust to TEACH us matters of truth? Is it luther? Is it your local church? Is it ourselves? If we could define and KNOW the truth, why would we need to seek it? If we can answer all these questions for ourselves and just come up with answers, then we don’t need to answer to anyone else, because all truth is subjective to our own understanding.

Not if you believe that the Holy Spirit…within every true believer…always points to Jesus and the truth, and will enable them to discern what is “true” and what is not true. Any church that claims sole authority as to being the only one able to dispense God’s Grace by way of their sacraments or any church that claims to have sole authority to be able to interpret His word …any church or organization/denomination that demands absolute adherence to whatever they pronounce as being “true” – simply because the say it is – makes the person in question have to put their faith in that church or organization first – before they put it in HIM.
The only person we will ultimately have to answer to is Jesus/God.

And who decided what books of the Bible were truly inspired, and handed down from the apostles? Who decided that the book of Manessah, the Didach, the epistle of Jeremiah, the book of susanna, and others were not inspired? Who decided that the book of Mark was actually written by mark, considering no author was actually cited?
And what’s more, what did Christians do for the first couple hundred years when they only had the old testament and maybe only a handful of new testament writings?

God uses those with the skills necessary for His purpose – where ever they may be.
Holy Spirit ….the gospel message that had been preached and taught.

What did Christ mean when he said “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall never prevail against it.”?

You said that Christ established a church, but that the catholic church of today is NOT the church of His time. But wouldn’t that contradict the words of Christ Himself?

I believe that Christ was referring to the statement of faith that Peter had just announced and THAT is what Christ was going to build His church upon….and the gates of the ‘netherworld’ will never prevail against that church ….His church of all true believers.

If you believe the church of Christ’s time is not the church of today, please show us what has changed. Show us one teaching in the old writings of the church that the new writings of the church contradict.

The topic of this thread is a pretty good indication of how it is not the same church as it was when the Apostles were establishing the early church…His church.
All the Marian dogmas…the Marian Theology ……they were just simply not there…with good reason….the focus was to be centered totally on Jesus and His mission……and now we have the Pope ‘dedicating the whole world to Mary ‘ – and praying to her – this is not what Jesus or the Apostles taught.

I would like to see your proof for that statement.

The Profession of Faith

Article 9 – I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church

“Outside the Church there is no salvation”

**846 **How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers? Re-formulated positively, it means that **all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:**Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter

I would like to see your proof for that statement.
You are not understanding what this really says, and it you will not as long as you are determined to use it to prove your own agenda.

Note that it says "All salvation comes FROM CHRIST through the Church. We believe that the Church is necesary because CHRIST is present in the church, and Christ works through the church, and the Church is His established guardian of all truth on earth. Without the church there is no salvation, because we would not have Christ present among us. Without the church, there is no eucharist, no sacrifice of the lamb. Christ asked us to drink of his blood and eat of his flesh, and so we obey him…this miracle happens IN His church. We do not re-sacrifice Christ, we participate in the ONGOING, work of Christ’s salvation on the cross! We “remember” in that when we participate in the mass, we ARE THERE. We are truly at the foot of the cross, sharing in the brokeness of our Lord! How much more “personal” and “approachable” do we need to be???

The Church is the PILLAR and BULWARK of the truth! Not the Bible, not personal interpretation. Without the church, we’d all be left to figure out for ourselves what we think the sacred scriptures are telling us.

But because of the church, we are able not only to read the scriptures, but to LIVE them!

mercygate:
Well the Catholic/Orthodox Churches have the paper trail. The “one church” of the first century can be traced back from the thread of witness and the authenticity of the message can be verified across all of those years. The Catholic/Orthodox churches have the succession of bishops that have sustained the apostolic teaching. So we find “I state” to be a rather pale claim by comparison.
**Leeann:/U]
I “high lighted” the wrong words – I meant to high light the “again”.

Well…it is the Catholic church’s own paper trail, isn’t it.
Yes he did……3 years after the fact of His very personal commission from the Lord, by going to Peter, which was fine, as the “one church” back then - was in no way the same as the Catholic church became over the centuries or as is it today – the “gospel message” is not the same that was taught by Paul or Peter or any of the Apostles back then….if it is the same…the Pope would be turning to JESUS…not Mary.

**mercygate: **
As a Convert to the Catholic Church, I can appreciate that you think that the faith is not the same. But I assure you, the principle that doctrine cannot expand or contract is thoroughly attested to in Catholic teaching today.

Could you restate that another way….what doctrine are you referring to here, in relation to the quote of mine you posted….sorry…I just can’t see it. Thanks
And one can find them and the presence of the Holy Spirit in many churches besides the “Catholic church” - where ever there are true, faithful believers in the gospel message that was preached.

mercygate:
One of the points of the Gospel message was unity.

And there is unity amongst all true, faithful believers, their unity is in Christ Himself.
mercygate:
While you carp at the Catholic Church for devotion to Our Lady and claim it is not true to the Gospel, that it is not Apostolic, how much of the apostolic teaching do you embrace? Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist? Baptismal regeneration? Infant baptism? Confession to a priest? The sacramental character of Holy Matrimony? All of this belongs to the Church of the Apostolic age.

I propose that until you have accepted of these teachings of the Apostolic and sub-apostolic Church, you are scarcely in a position to challenge the Catholic and Orthodox churches for their devotion to Our Lady.

To whom would the Apostles point the Pope’s attention too….Jesus….or Your Lady?**

If you read any of the gospels, epistles, books of the N.T. where they lay out and establish the early churches and preach and teach the gospel message - do you see ANY resemblance at all with the Catholic church as it progressed throught the centuries - right from the priests, to the monks, to the nuns, to the way the “sacraments” are performed - to the ‘political’ involvements throughout history, to the wealth, to the ‘rituals’ …and to the Marian Theology…any resemblance?

You claimed that Jesus and the apostles “never taught” that the Catholic Church was necessary for salvation.

You haven’t given proof for that statement. Apparently, you think everything that Jesus taught can be found in the Bible.

I’d like to see your proof for that also (since you couldn’t show any proof for the first thing I asked). That is, that everything that Jesus and the apostles taught is found in the Bible.

Please show your proof for that.

The difference being that the question posed, is in regards to an extremely serious need – of the community, of all the nations in fact and not directed to the community itself – but to Mary.

*“We implore you to have pity today **on the nations that have gone astray, on all Europe, on the whole world, **that they might repent and return to your heart,” the text of the prayer reads.

With the words of Bartolo, the Pontiff turned to Mary, saying: “If you will not help us because we are ungrateful and unworthy children of your protection, we will not know to whom to turn.”*

In view of the Pope saying - “we will not know to whom to turn”… my question is, if the Apostles were standing next to the Pope, to whom do you think they would be advising him to “turn” too …to Mary…or Jesus?

So in this case – to whom would the Apostles direct the “community” attention too for such a serious request……Mary….or Jesus?
mercygate:
It was through the community of believers that they were grafted into Christ through baptism. Even Paul received the Holy Spirit at the hands of the Church “instead” of from Jesus directly. The author of the letter to the Hebrews exhorts his hearers “not [to neglect] to meet together . . .” The Communion of Saints is the Body of Christ both on earth and in Heaven. It is not “instead” of Christ. One cannot love Christ without loving His Church. His family. His mother . . .
If your are referring to His Church being the Catholic church – then your statement is wrong.

One *can *love Christ and His family and His mother without loving the Catholic church – I do and there are many others who do, who are baptized into His body and who do come together to meet and be in communion with one another and Him.
mercygate:
In the Apostolic age, the Apostles would have pointed believers to the Church, of whom Our Lady is also the mother, not “instead” of Jesus but as the place where Jesus can be most truly known.
In the Apostolic age, the Apostles would very well have pointed believers to the churches in their communities, where Jesus was most truly known, however you will never find reference to Mary as to being the reason why.

With regards to the topic question of this thread – where would they have pointed the Pope too – to the Catholic Church??? – so you see what I am saying…with regards to question posed?

I know He is interested in a personal relationship *first and foremost *with only you, once that’s in affect, it will be up to you to decide how much communion you feel is necessary with other believers, whether they be saints living here on earth or in heaven, to meet those ‘needs’ that you described in your previous post.

Ok Leeann I thought about your question a little more:)

Let’s say we could time-warp back to the apostles.

We stand, as an audience, and we see the pope imploring the apostles. He asks them to POINT, “to whom shall we turn?”

And I believe with confidence I can say, Mary.

Why? Because Jesus, when he was crucified, said to the woman "Woman, behold, your son. And then gazing at his apostles, He said “behold, your mother.”

They would point to Mary, because after Christ ascended into heaven, Mary was still with them, pointing to her son! 🙂

Quote:
There is no human more righteous than Mary so her prayer is the most powerful and she ought to be called on for praying on our behalf.

Jesus says:
None Greater Than John the Baptist
Code:
Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath
not risen a greater than John the Baptist. Matt. 11:11

Christ is the one and only mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 8:6; 9:15; 12:24)…It can not be made any clearer in the scriptures that God wants to communicate with us directly, and to be cautious of those who try to step in to mediate.

“When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you.” (Deuteronomy 18:9)

If you read what Mary lastly says in the Bible.
John 2:5
His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Jesus says:
Matthew 6:9-15
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

I think you would benefit greatly from visiting the CAF library, listed in the tabs at the top of this page. There is a speciffic article about “Do Catholics pray to the dead?” That I think you would find interesting!

The short answer to that question, is NO! God asks us not to speak with the dead. We share our faith with the LIVING! Both our brothers and sisters on earth, and those alive in Christ in heaven!
Our faith is not a “me and my pal Jesus” kind of faith. It is a faith centered around the FAMILY of God! We are not “best buddies” with Jesus. It’s not a two way street where communication can only travel from us to Him and back again. Where matters of faith may only be revealed between our understanding and our personal relationship with Christ. Our faith is about the FAMILY of believers! We SHARE Christ’s love with one another, and share Christ present among us. Ours is a living faith! A breathing, ever revealing truth, guarded by the holy spirit within the Church, established by Christ!
Code:
"God is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living" as it says in scripture!

We, as imperfect beings still striving for holiness as we work out our salvation in loving faith, with God's grace, are ALIVE in Christ! How much more alive are those in heaven, who have BEEN perfected in Christ, and share in perfect communion with Him?

We share an intimate relationship with our Lord, when we partake of Him, body, blood, soul, and divinity in the eucharist! The traditions and practices of our faith are there to help us on our path to Christ. To help us serve, love, and know Him.
Thank you for sharing these passages from sacred scripture! It is one of the three pillars of our faith! Scripture, illuminated by the light of the holy spirit through tradition and the authority of Christ’s church:)

And before you post scripture to “prove” our faith wrong, please bear in mind that you are using the very scripture that the church you are refuting gave you 🙂

27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

That is a very dear scripture, thank you for posting it! We actually sing this very passage often during communion:)

We sing, because we are truly coming to Christ, in the eucharist!

Notice, Christ doesn’t say “come to me, and abandon everyone else whom I and you have loved.”

What does this passage mean, when it says “No one knows the the Father except the son, and the one to whom the son wills to reveal Him.”

Would you say Jesus willed to reveal himself to Mary?
