Tlaloc, you leave her out of this! Just because you can’t understand her faith OR self-control does not mean she is not using LOGIC!SHAME:tsktsk: Maybe you ought to listen to her,she seems to have a lot of wisdom. She doesn’t look at people as appetisers to graze through.

Tlaloc:
Having had lovers in no way indicates disloyalty to a future spouse.

Some choose not to wear white out of the old meaning of the color but for the majority these days that’s considered as passe as not wearing white shoes after labor day.

Why would you restrict it to only one person? No one said give it away to anyone. Trying to sleep with as many people as possible is just as unhealthy as trying to avoid sex. There is a middle course.

It makes perfect sense. By having lovers you explore your own sexuality and gain experience. You form wonderful relationships and enjoy moments of pure bliss. You become a more complete human being. By having an experienced lover you not only have someone who is much more likely to be good in the sack but also a more rounded human being as a friend and partner.

That’s not logic, it’s faith. You have faith that remaining a virgin is for the best despite the logic to the contrary. That’s fine, you are certainly entitled to believe whatever you want, just don’t confuse the two.

Lisa N:
Steve, you responded to my comments directed at Tlaloc.
I know . Your post seemed to imply that a person was either completely on the straight and narrow or out looking for Mr. Goodbar

As in most things…most of us reside somewhere in the middle
Lisa N:
However I do want to call you out for the use of the words 'b**tard children…
It is a perfectly legitimate (no pun intended) word (Alright maybe a little bit of a pun intended but come on, you throw up a meatball like that and I just have to swing at it)

Lisa N:
…… Even if YOUR encounters are limited to that special group you admit to, you have no control over their partners and the partners of their partners etc.
As Tlalco pointed out, no one has complete knowledge or control over anyone
Whether you have 1 or 100 partners it is all a matter of trust.
Lisa N:
… The point being that there IS an inherent risk in having multiple partners …
Life is all bout risk management.

From driving down the street, to deciding to get married, to eating those old leftovers from the back of the frig…every decision we make carries some risk.

That is what adult life is all about.
You places your bets and you takes your chances
Lisa N:
I didn’t comment on your life.
I didn’t say you were. I was responding to Lisa4Catholics not Lisa N.
Lisa N:
… I think there is ample evidence that having multiple sexual partners dramatically increases risk of STDs and unplanned pregnancies… Would you disagree?
It seems reasonable to state that increased number of partners and or increased sexual activity would raise the probability of STDs, pregnancies, etc

but I haven’t seem any numbers that would support or refute whether they were “dramatic” increases or not I suppose that it would depend on what your definition of dramatic was and how risk adverse you are

Clearly to avoid any of those problems you would have no sex

But (again without seeing any numbers and this is probably something that it would be very difficult to obtain numbers on) the marginal increase in risk seems like it would be fairly small
Lisa N:
You are aware that statisically speaking those who live together prior to marriage are MUCH more likely to divorce?
I have heard those statistics but I don’t know the source and it isn’t my field so I couldn’t comment.
Lisa N:
… if your commitment is so tenuous that it could be broken by the experience of dirty sox or flautulence, then it wasn’t much of a commitment in the first place.
Sigh. We are literal minded aren’t we? No my commitment isn’t that tenuous. I was using socks et al as metaphors of the day to day realties of life. (You’ll note I also included family members and financial responsibilities on my list)

Like you and the health problems you’ve encountered, I base my opinions/feelings on my personal experiences.
Lisa N:
And what would having sex with multiple women prior to marriage have done to provide knowledge of your first wife’s expectations? IOW you haven’t connected the dots. It sounds as if you didn’t know each other well and had problems communicating expectations before marriage. Again, how would multiple sexual partners or living together help what was obviously a problem in communicating? Maybe you were both simply too young and didn’t even know yourselves well enough to understand much less communicate your expectations…
I didn’t say that multiple partners would have helped.
I said that if we had spent more time together learning each others habits and needs we might have avoided getting married in the first place

And no we weren’t too young….we were both very much of age. We were just ….incompatible. Tragically so.
Lisa N:
It sounds like you are going into this marriage with more maturity and understanding of youself and each other. I wish you well.
thank you
Lisa N:
There you go…commenting on MY life. You think I have small self esteem? Huh? What would give you that illusion?
I wasn’t trying to say anything personal. You had said something about possibly not feeling special or just one in a multitude if your partner had had other experiences.
Lisa N:
Frankly I wish I’d had the self esteem now that I didn’t have when I was when I was a teenager. …’
Lisa N:
That’s why teenagers shouldn’t have sex. Like I said it is all about risk management.
If you can’t play a the table with the big kids then keep your chips in you pockets

rayne89 said:
:rotfl: How the heck would you know if they were honest?

The same way you know your spouse to be is a virgin. You get to know them. Look Rayne if you don’t learn to not date liars you’re going to have problems regardless of whether you sleep with them sooner or later.
Oh pleeaassee. Maybe the virgins you knew were just boring in general. Myself and my 2 closest friends in highschool (who are still my bestfriends now) married the only guy we ever slept with. We’re pretty open in discussing things and I’ll bet ya all the tea in china none of guys thought/think we were/are boring. The one friend I have whose sex life really sucks is the one that had multiple partners before marriage.
Sure. But as you have no basis for comparison your views are not convincing. I’ve been on both sides of the equation. I’ve been the naive virgin. I’ve also been the more experienced lover. And these guys who are satisfied, were they also virgins? Just wondering.
Oh yeah real appealing. You know what my husband got fro sleeping with mutiple woman before we were married, chlamydia and crabs. Isn’t that “yummy”?
I haven’t gotten any STDs. Wow, who would have thought being somewhat careful might pay off?
Try being married for 7 years and having her husbands ex-girlfriend accuse him in a paternity suit. After spending thousands of dollers in legal fees ya find out the the test comes back negative. Now if he would have kept it in his pants we’d never have had to go through that.
Right you bring up an extremely rare occurance as if it were every day thing. Certainly there are risks to having sex. Welcome to life.
People that don’t have sex before marriage are not sexually repressed, or fridgid. They’re not mentally damaged. This is a modern liberal myth. And those that wait til marriage have longer stronger marriages statisically.
Please show me the statistics on that because the last time I looked at it the difference was very small.
How about a little dose of reality with all your “enlightened” remarks?
Let me know when the dose sets in.

Tlaloc,

again you suprise me with you complete lack of respect…now you go after a fifteen year old out of spite…and call her logic, which is logic to everyone but you and steve it seems, a matter of faith. Man you have really bought into culture of death and all of it’s empty promises. You keep saying that you are not athiest, are you christian? If so what do you think God was talking about when he instituted marriage? isn’t what you are doing violating the sactity of marriage by sleeping around? BEING UNFAITHFUL to your furture spouse?

Lisa N:
STDs are apparently a HUGE problem in our young people these days and that is in effect what this thread is about, young people having sex before they are mentally and emotionally ready even if all the parts fit together nicely.
No this thread is about restricting sex to marriage. Being mentally and emotionally ready and being married are two entirely unrelated things. Many are ready long before marriage. Some aren’t ready by the day they die.
Much damage to society has resulted in the explosion of premarital sex.
Much damage resulted form sexual repression over the last thousand years. Look at our societies twisted view of sex as something tawdry, that comes from repression of healthy sexual expression, not an overabundance of it.
I am not ancient but I do remember a time when no one had heard of HPV, much less AIDS. I also remember a time when an out of wedlock pregnancy was something rare, not something that barely raises an eyebrow.
Yeah those were also the days when spousal abuse happend all the time but nobody talked about it. Aren’t repressive societies fun? You get to have all the sickness but people just don’t say anything! Wheee!
I don’t think our society has improved greatly with all of this indiscriminate premarital sexual activity.
Many have gone too far certainly. Moderation.
As to Tlaloc’s comment that virgins are ‘boring,’ how utterly tasteless. But I guess I wouldn’t have expected anything else.
Such double standards. You feel fine railing against those who have sex out of wedlock as all being disease ridden but a comment of boring is “tasteless.” Sex is a skill like any other. Those who don’t ever practice are almost certainly bad at it. I’m sorry if that upsets you, but it’s a fact of life that unused skills don’t improve. On the other hand your constant attacks on the certainty of getting a disease should you be sexually active are far from true.

Tlaloc what do you see as the point of sexuality? I think that you have a skewed view on what sexuality is meant for and what it means to marriage. Come tell us…

**General reminder:

One of the rules of usage is that all are expected to respect the Catholic faith of the hosts and the participants, whether or not they agree with it. Encouraging a Catholic to flout his Catholic morals violates the terms to which participants must agree upon registration.

If the conversation continues to deteriorate, the thread will have to be closed.**

Tlaloc:
So let me get this straight,
Not only do you want people to play russian roulette marriage by marrying blindly with no capacity to know how compatible they are as lovers but if they happen to guess badly for their lifetime commitment you want to hold them to the standard of Christ’s parents?

No pressure or anything.
Compatible how? Uh unless someone is missing some biological part it ya take a man and woman and put 'em together and works just fine. I just don’t get that, are ya doing something different than the rest of us?

***I had premarital sex, and I regret it whole heartedly. I think it effects my marriage now, although my husband is the only one I’ve been with, he has had many partners besides me. That really hurts, even though I was aware of it before we married. I think he regrets it to, but he doesn’t like to talk about it. I’m finishing RCIA, and I can’t wait to confess and recieve pennents and forgiveness. It is hard now, because people know I lived with my husband before we were married, and they know how seriously I take my faith now, and I’m sure many of them feel I’m a hypocrite. It is hard to live that down and set a good example for young people, while still dealing with the mistake I do not want them to make. It is complicated. I also think of my future children (God willing) and what they may think if they know. I don’t want them to make the same mistake. ***

If you do not run around sleeping with people, you would have the “problem” of comparing one “lover” with another.😃
You’re saying that mediocrity is fine so long as you’ve never known anything better? Well there is a certain logic to that, but its a pretty depressing position to take.

Mac6yver:
I have to give you credit Tlaloc, it takes some brass to state that opinion on these forums.
The only thing I promise you is that I’ll be fully honest about my opinions.

Mediocrity is based on what?Doing what you should not have been doing resulting in the comparrison of people based on your subjective oppinion of what is “good” sexually.😛

Tlaloc, you leave her out of this!
If she wants to be part of the conversation that’s her decision. I won’t treat her with kid gloves. I trust that she can deal with an adult disagreement while you run in to protect her as if she were helpless. Ask yourself which of us is being more respectful.

Just because you can’t understand her faith OR self-control does not mean she is not using LOGIC!SHAME:tsktsk:

But I do inderstand it. It’s based on ancient sexual mores. Her trust for those ancient mores come from her faith, hence why her position is based on faith and not logic.

Maybe you ought to listen to her,she seems to have a lot of wisdom.

I listen to everyone. But listening and agreeing are entirely different.

She doesn’t look at people as appetisers to graze through.

That’s entirely your own invention. I’ve never stated or thought anything of the kind. you assume that being sexually active means being a sexual predator. That’s simply false. I have a great deal of love and respect for my partners. I stay in touch mith most of them. They are not apetizers but people with whom I have shared wonderful intimacies. They are a part of my life and my memories forever.

Tlaloc,

You never answered me, what is your position on the purpose of human sexuality?

Tlaloc, at what age will you start encouraging your daughter to start sleeping around so she can tune up her skills?

Tyler Smedley:
Tlaloc,
again you suprise me with you complete lack of respect…now you go after a fifteen year old out of spite…
Actually it was out of respect that I treated her as an adult. She made a comment and i reacted to it the same as with Lisa, by pointing out the logical flaws. Thats my raison d’etre if you will.
and call her logic, which is logic to everyone but you and steve it seems, a matter of faith.
Tyler everyone here but me (and possibly steve) are Catholic and hence not representative of the population in general. If you’ve taken a look outside you’ll notice the general consensus is much closer to my position than yours. That being the case you may want to avoid such argument tactics.
Man you have really bought into culture of death and all of it’s empty promises. You keep saying that you are not athiest, are you christian?
No. Call it Iconoclastic Spiritualism if you like.
isn’t what you are doing violating the sactity of marriage by sleeping around? BEING UNFAITHFUL to your furture spouse?
No. there’s no ex post facto to marriage. Indeed since my own (soon to be) marriage is an open relationship it doesn’t even have to be unfaithful to sleep with others after the marriage (depending of course on your relationship with your partner).

Understood. I’ve tried to always indicate that others are free to follow their faith, but pointing out the difference between faith and reason and the detriments to particular tenets of the faith doesn’t seem disrespectful to me. Only appraising.

If you want to point out anything you think I’ve done poorly please feel free to PM me.

That’s like saying “what’s the point of art?” Its far to large a question to answer.
