In theory, the couple should have been warned, and probably were warned, but I can’t be sure.

It is not unusual these days, at least in this part of the country, to believe that laws are “just there”, and if you ignore them you probably won’t get caught. This is the “it’s OK to not stop at a stop sign unless there’s a police car right there watching you” syndrome. (But I guess that’s a subject for another thread.)

Can people see how some of this discussion is going to come across as “anyone who doesn’t have the same standards of modesty as I do doesn’t know how to dress for Mass”?

There are definitely items that are clearly inappropriate - booty shorts, exposed midriffs, and the like. At the same time, there are standards that people, even faithful Catholics and with the approval of their priests, can and do disagree on. It may be different in other locations, but where I am I would expect to see something like the following (sleeveless, knee-length) dress as a conservative option for business women:

I think it’s not unreasonable to say there are plenty of faithful Catholic women who would find nothing objectionable about wearing such a dress to Mass, and it’s going to come across very poorly for random folk to declare them inappropriate. I suspect it would come across as a a bit tone-deaf to ban such a dress too; it just seems a bit oversexed to a lot of people if the clothes you could wear to work in a bank can’t be worn to church. Most people I’ve found tend to take business casual for the area as a good guide to what’s appropriate for Mass.

Business Casual would be a tremendous improvement in some parishes. Especially for those capable of driving to church in Cadillacs and other very expensive vehicles.

It can become opinionated at a certain point.

I’d personally put a sweater over it, but then again, on a 90 deg. July day, I would find this dress to be fine if a young woman was wearing it.

We have plenty of yucky threads nitpicking wardrobe. This one is about an awesome priest who asks people to consider to what degree their interactions with fellow parishoners and visitors succeed at bearing the light of Christ to others.

This should be sent to every new member of CAF and pinned at the top of the fora. There seem to be a lot of people who like to complain about their fellow parishioners rather than keeping their eyes on their own papers.

The pastor there until recently was Fr. Marx, RIP. A holy man and a great confessor. He basically gave his health and his life to that parish.
I remember him gently reminding the men in one homily that they should wear jackets. So fatherly about it. Everyone was " my dear one" to him .

In my parish, I noted that jeans were common
daily mass dress, at first, I was horrified. But then
I figured if they really intend on seeking God, who
was I to judge? I now wear jeans sometimes, too.
Some poor ppl may attend daily mass if they have
no other attire to wear and if their heart is in the
right disposition to receive the Church’s blessing.

In a world where many people wear jeans to the office, jeans to a nice restaurant, jeans as part of a fashionable outfit etc and some pairs of jeans cost as much or more than dress pants, a nice pair of non-grubby jeans aren’t exactly poor people’s wear.

Don’t tell the off-topic police, lol!

I don’t wear them, but that’s my own personal choice. And I’m not bothered by anyone who does. We have several parishioners who do and they are there every week, holy days, are involved in parish activities… the jeans matter not.

It’s sad to see so many impoverished teens running around in jeans that are full of holes. At least their parents could go to Goodwill or something.

I wonder if I might be able to call my priest out on wearing his Addidas sandles with white socks at daily mass? 🧐 Would it matter that just as much as him, probably, I would wear my flip flops to daily mass?

(Honestly, after a while, I got quite desensitized to it- pretty much, anyways.)

Welcome to CAF, ladies and gentlemen! Step right up onto our judging platform and you too can get your VERY OWN personal litany of what is wrong with what you’re wearing! Right now we’re doing a 2 for 1 special. If you have kids you can also get a special judgment of your parenting skills ABSOLUTELY FREE!!! Act fast before all the good judgments are gone!

Act fast before all the good judgments are gone!
😆
And just like that…it becomes a “me, ooh please roast me!” thread. Will we make it all the way to Kevin Bacon or perhaps Ancient Aliens? I’m not mad. I’m impressed at the plot twists.

The bulletin should go on to “charitably” address the parish as to what constitutes appropriate dress. Then, if everyone heeded the words of the good father, they would not be subject to the “secret” corrections by all the parish meanies.
