Priests and cassocks

I once visited a traditional Benedictine monastery in the South, and the priest processed out of the sacristy for Mass wearing a white pointed hood. I groaned inwardly to myself “oh, ****…”, until I realized that this was his religious habit. No eye holes.

He took the hood off his head once Mass began.
In the Dominican rite, the priest does the same thing: he processes to the altar with his hood on. I think it looks cool.

No, no, no. These were just examples of me seeing a priest outside of church. One was at the gym and the other at the store. Expecting the poor man to be working out in priestly garb would be silly.

I think the last priest I remember wearing a cassock was the Pastor of our parish back in 1970. He wore it everywhere, even on the tractor when he was tilling the land.

A seminarian who was doing ministry in our parish several years ago used to wear one all the time, and a surplice when he served Mass. He was told to stop wearing it in public because he kept being mistaken for a priest. He has since been ordained and I’ve often wondered if he still wears it.

Our priests wear cassocks. Our seminarians and deacons wear them while serving mass. I’m grateful we have so many clergymen and seminarians around, whether in cassocks or not.

At least in the US, RCC deacons are prohibited from wearing clerical attire outside of liturgical context, while EC deacons are mandated to wear it at anything church related . . . so our Grand Night wore his shirt at KofC meetings . . .

At that point this seminarian wasn’t even an instituted lector, let alone a deacon.

How awesome would it be to see your priest working out in one of these t-shirts? 😇

Wow… there really are a ton of Catholic Priest T-Shirts out there. Just google “Catholic Priest T-Shirt”

It varies from Diocese to Diocese. In my own Diocese, deacons are regularly seen outside of the liturgy in clerical attire, particularly if their day jobs are at the church itself.

Yes, in my diocese, Deacons are allowed to wear a gray shirt with Roman collar

I wear a cassock every single day. You’re talking about real people there, my friend.

I would expect them to wear a black t-shirt, black workout shorts, black socks, and black sneakers! 🤣
that black t-shirt should have a white collar . . .

:crazy_face::roll_eyes:🤣

 flashback . . .

a few years ago, I took my priest and the Maronite priest to a KofC fourth degree.

Priests don’t take our degrees in the normal way, but just observe (we’re not going to presume to instruct them! 😱).

As he was wearing a grey cassock, they tried to tell him that deacons went with the regular candidates! 🤯🤔

"NO, he’s my priest. We’re eastern, JUST LIKE THE PARISH HOSTING THIS!!!**

LOL

Yeah, Latin priests in the United States are supposed to only wear black shirts. I would imaging that many people most likely think that also applies to the Eastern priests, since their priests are part of the USCCB

Where does the “black shirt” rule come from? I very often see priests wearing gray or pastel shirts with the Roman collar.

Wouldn’t it be up to the diocesan Bishop to determine standards of attire for his priests? (Now, whether they would follow those standards might be another story…)

The discussion here has more to do with leadership and less to do with standards. I don’t know the standards, but since I have seen only one priest in priestly garb outside of church in the last few decades, I am guessing that the rules don’t require them to look like priests.
My argument is that simply seeing priests wearing their cassocks (or even a collar) out in the street would be a way to witness to the Truth.
