That guy is wrong for calling you and idiot. It says in the bible not to do that. I know you say you don’t mind but i wouldn’t claim it!
Sticks and stones. I have been told here that I seem angry. Believe me, I am not angry. The person who says I am angry based on statements that I only think are logical calls me an idiot. So who is angry? I have read Saint Paul’s list of the gifts of the Holy Spirit a number of times. And I have met quite a few people who claim to have them, these gifts. Maybe he made a mistake and left out anger.

I also think the great saint must have made a mistake to leave out sarcasm. I looked again and again and can’t find it. If it were there I am sure I would be a saint.

I am thinking of changing my sign in. God’s Idiot. Or maybe, Old Fool.

When engaging in a battle of wits, come at least half prepared.

That’s it!

I am the Dimwit. Just don’t call me Nit. Nit was my cousin Mr. Picker.

Just thought things needed to lighten up around here folks.

God commands us to love one another.

:tsktsk: I don’t want to get in on this one but, Matt.5:22 states calling another a fool ( translates to idiot in the new living translation) can send ones soul to hell. I’ve got my faults also, but it helps me if someone point these scriptures out to me. God’s peace to both of you.🙂
That’s why I said I need to deal with personal weakness like that. But I hope to do better than that. It helps if he (grandfather) pay attention to what I said instead of going on in a one way traffic with his condemnation and judgment.

I apologize for that. I did thought that over but I have no other choice.

Please let me apologize to all. I was answering another person’s post who called me an idiot, by accepting the insult. I am God’s idiot. No harm done.
BTW, I like to summarize the points been presented so far:-

You condemn Protestant Pentecostalism.
Protestant Pentecostalism does not concern me as I don’t go to their activities. And if in the instances they are not in line with the Catholic teaching then I am opposed to them.

You condemn Catholic Charismatic Renewal.
I don’t because it is part of the Catholic Church and is recognized by the Pope. Catholics who are involved in it are truly Catholics just like any other Catholics.

[Some notable figures associated with the Renewal: the late Cardinal Suenen, Bishop Codez and Fr. R. Cantalamessa the official papal preacher. Lay people like Ralph Martin, the late Brian Smith and Charles Whitehead are some of the pioneers of the Renewal. The ICCRS (International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Service) based in Rome presently headed by Alan Panozza, a fine Aussie gentleman.]

You don’t believe in the charismatic gifts.
I believe that they have been present in the church since its inception. The main reason they might not be prevalence at certain period in its history is because Christians did not expect them.

You said Catholic Charismatics are people who don’t love God, Mary, pray and eventually leave the church.
I said these are far from the truth in fact on the contrary they are strengthened in their faith, love of God, prayer, Mary, Sacraments, Bible and evangelization.

You believe in miracles but do not believe it can happen among the Catholic Charismatics.
I believe miracles happen as and when God decides them to happen regardless of who we are.

You don’t seem to take the words in the Bible seriously.
I believe wholeheartedly in the Bible. Taken together with the Church’ teaching it can be a reference for our faith.

Finally, both of us feel that personal holiness should be the focus above everything else and the way to God starts with deep repentance.

Please correct me if the above observation is not true reflection of what you say so far.

Reuben

Nancy,

Another point I just remembered regarding Islam. The Vatican recently released a document discouraging Catholic women from marrying men of the Islamic faith. That seems a strange thing to do if the faiths were compatible.

In 1965 my husband was excommunicated for marrying me a Protestant. We were not considered married and my children were not considered his…My husband continued mass and I went with him but, did not take communion…I am presently nondenominational and I know Catholics don’t accept this either…I do accept Mary apparition or not…So now what is going to happen to us…

I tried the Catholic church, the Catholic children threatened to beat up my children, the Priest allowed it to happen, so they quit going to Catechism.

I still participate in Catholic gatherings for my husbands family.

I am treated as an outcast wether I go or don’t go. 43 years we have not been married.

I was raised with Christian virtues and Love as a Protestant, that is why my husband married me, we marry for Love, and had our children and taught them…God is Love and is No Respector of Persons…

Also in Mass the Priest kept criticisng Protestants, which is my family so I quit going…we are very happy in our nondenominational church without bias…

Bias is very dangerous. It stirs the wrong things in a persons soul.
I teach my children and grandchildren to Love, with all your heart and soul. To give and share and according to Mother Mary she stated to the people of Cincinnati “Instead of trying to change the world, change yourselves.”

Jesus said"Teach Love, Compassion and Peace."

Sorry, but I don’t believe that your husband was excommunicated. Marrying a Protestant has never been an excommunicable offense in the Church as long as there has been Protestants. My father-in-law is Protestant while my mother-in-law if Catholic. They were married in 1953 in a Catholic church and she was not excommunicated.

The fact that your husband was allowed to receive the Eucharist shows that he was not excommunicated. If you are not excommunicated, you are not allowed to receive the sacraments.

Were you married in a Catholic Church or was it a civil ceremony? If you were married civilly but not sacramentally, the Church would not recognize your marriage.
I tried the Catholic church, the Catholic children threatened to beat up my children, the Priest allowed it to happen, so they quit going to Catechism. <<
I doubt that the priest allowed it. I don’t think you’re giving us the full story here.

If you saw a blind man walking toward an open manhole would you warn him or would you say “He has chosen his path and it is just as good as any other path”? I hope you would warn him. In the same way Protestants are on a spiritual path that may be putting them into danger. The priest was doing the right thing to warn them of the possible danger they may face.

BTW, unlike Protestants which say that you must be “born again” according to their understanding of the phrase in order to be saved, Catholics believe that God is sovereign and can save whomever He wishes whether they are Catholic or not.

Bias is dangerous but so is spiritual deception. What you are calling bias might just be the priest warning the spiritually blind about the hole they are walking towards.

This is really disheartening to hear. Just when i was considering going to mass to check it out… This would definetly make one consider if God is taking part in such behavior. Jesus would never act like that… That is outrageous. Please somebody that is catholic tell me you don’t act like that. Please…It just really discredits you so badly. Jesus accepts all and loves all if Jesus is in it i don’t get this behavior.

The story posted is very difficult to believe.

Catholics do not get excommunicated for marrying Protestants. The Church marries Catholics to Protestants in the Church all the time. My parents were such a couple and my wife was not Catholic when we married. This is only one point of the post that makes it sound like the truth was being stretched. There were others as well.

Thank you. I just want to be clear what your stand is so that I don’t have to repeat my explanation.

I want to ask you again - what do you think of the Catholic Charismatic Renenewal? I am not interested in Protestant Charismatic or Pentecostalism, but in the Catholic Church we do have our own Renewal going on for the last forty years or so. What do you think about this idea?
I believe what I said regarding pentacostals and charismatics is there is little difference between what goes on in their meetings. I think it is a trait of charismatics and pentacostals to be excitable, self-stimulating themselves into religious excitement, because they like to be excited. At their Masses they do things outside the prescribed rubrics. There is a lot of this going on in the Church today, that would be classified liturgical abuse, so that is not peculiar to charismatics.
OK, you stand is clear. I take it you mean Catholic Charismatics -that they are self-stimulating into religous excitement. What do you think about St Teresa of Avilla? She was very prayerful and very devoted, which in itself is already a charism. You may not say that she was self-stimulated in her excitement but her enthusiasm for God is unmistakable and from what I know she ia one of the models for CC in prayer.

So you don’t approve of the mass that CC attend. In the places you referred to, are the conventional Sunday and Weekday parish mass replaced by the so-called Charismatic mass? Or are they confined to private mass only?
If it were there are thousands of prophesies coming from God daily around the country in meetings going on in every city and town in America. These people are making it up. It is bogus.
I disagree with you here but you are entitled to your opinion. I say there may be millions of prophecies coming from God across the Catholic world considering there are hundreds of millions of Catholics today who may consider themselves Charismatic in spirituality. Among the prophecies proclaimed there are many that are really genuine and inspired by God to edify the people concerned.
Saynig that since whatever they say is not in contradiction to the Bible that makes it harmless is wrong. The claim is that God is telling some person, thousands of them to speak for Him, in His voice, with His authority. My children, blah, blah, blah. It is a lie. It is a thousand lies. They are making it up. When a prophet speaks he says, thus saith the Lord. When a scribe speaks in his authority he says, it is written. When an author uses someone elses words he attributes the source. When you say God is speaking through you and it is nothing more than your sentimental feelings this is deceit. It is not harmless. Lies are sins.
I disagree again. It is not a sin if a person does not purposely lie. If the person believe the inspiration is from God and has discussed it with a few people to discern it and agree it is consistent with what God wants to speak, I think it is not a sin.

When you proclaim inspired message you can say, thus says the Lord. You can say, I sense that the Lord wants to say this or that. If a person don’t say it in the third person, he is only verbalising what he receives from God directly. It makes no difference especially if the participants are familiar with what’s going on.

The disposition of the participants in the meeting too is important -that the message should be put to the test.

Well,l accept your opinion in that you do not believe in the Charismatic gift of prophecy.

I can make no judgement on who loves God. Only God sees the soul. The Bible says those who love God obey God. Each of us can look in our consciences and see whether or not we are obedient. If we are sinful, we can conclude we do not love God. Speaking in tongues will not fix this. Repentance and conffession will, God’s grace.
I disagree again here if you say that speaking in tongue is sinful. Is that what you mean since your sentence of speaking in tongue comes right after those who does not love God?
I have seen Catholics leave the Church after being involved in the charismatic movement. I have seen charismatics get divorced. When sins become visible we can say that a certain person needs grace and has departed from it. This is a statement about individuals, not lumping every person who attends these meetings into one group or another.
Interesting. From what you saw, were they all or the majority of Catholic Charismatics that get divorced or leaving the church? What roughly the percentage of those who in that category?

OK. So it about individuals.

I see diferently though. I have seen thousand upon thousand lasped Catholics, Sunday Christian Catholics who turn their lives around after being renewed in the Holy Spirit.

Personally I have witnessed to hundred of broken familes amd marraiges being restored by the work of those people in the Renewal who serve the Lord in this ministry. I have seen a few physical healings too, those that can be authentated beside many more testimonies that were not.

I have seen millions of youth step up in faith to live lives of righteousness for God after hearing the proclamation of the words. Many of these move on to really become serious Christians. I have friends inthe Renewal who move on to become priests and nuns. And what a blessing when they come to say private mass in my home among many friends.

I have seen many non-Christians converted to Catholicism because of the faith they obtain when we come into contact with them through conferences, seminars and talks or through personal evangelization.

I have seen personally Muslims who convert to Catholicism in a country I do not wish to mention here due to safety reason, who would leave their head scarfs at the door, listen to Word of God being proclaimed or going to the mass, and after that go back to their families as outward Muslims because they cannot profess their faith openly due to perscution by the Islamic authority.

Yes, there are individuals who left the church, became disoriented and so on, but the number is nothing compared to the multitudes who return to God. I say here, if I may, there are always people who will leave the church one way or the others and certainly they are NOT only Charismatics Catholics.

But I cannot deny that God works in His Church through the power of the Holy Spirit, and for that I have to speak it out and give glory to God. I may be a very unpopular voice here but I have to testify these things out. And please, I am not talking about Protestantism.

Catholic Charismativ Renewal is recognized by the Church as one of its movements in diversity. I mention the late Cardinal Suenen who was put in charge on the work of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Codez is responsible for the laity in the Renewal. Even tha papal preacher, Fr. Cantalamessa does adovate Charismatic gifts. John XXIII believed that the 20th century is the century of the second Pentecost. Paul VI and JP2 after him continued in this direction. And I have no doubt that Benedict 16 would do too though it is too early to see his active achievement in this.
This is absurd. There are thousands of Proteatant denominations. They all disagree on something or other and all claim they believe the Bible as their rule of faith and they have it right and the others are wrong. The Bible has to be read with the mind of the Church. So if I do not agree with another Christian or you on what the Bible means that proves I don’t take the Bible seriously. Absurd.
As I said this does not concern me. I was exasperated when you keep associating me with Protestantism.

The Bible should be understood together with the magestrium and common Catholic understanding. You can give me example if I said otherwise and we can discuss that.
It is not a reference. It is the means by which we know truth through divine revelation, scripture and tradition.
Why it is not a reference when we can get our knowledge of God from it?

Please refer to CCC 107, 112, 113 and 114 on what the church says.
God’s Idiot
I am not normally harsh in discussion but I think I have tried to save this discussion by summarizing our stands. It is easier to move on when we know each other’s stand on issue like this.

The Priest telling the Parish that they ate Baptist Burgers at the Seminary…And spending the whole Mass descrediting Protestants…is not Christian… I was raised not to descredit or defame unless I was wiser and understnading and walked in their shoes.

My story is true! California Priest told my husband he was excommunicated if he married me,. and we were ,married in a Protestant church as a result…

It doesn’t matter anymore, my children are grown, and we are member of a nondenominational church that welcomes evryone…

My family came to this country as Quakers in the 1600 to Mass. Everyone knows their story. They were tortured and Jailed in England…If you married a non-Quaker you were excommunicated unless they became Quakers…my grandmother was Mary Boone, everyone knows the Boones…she married a nonQuaker who became Quaker it is written in the Quaker records…Her husband didn’t like being attacked by Indians when hunting and started defending himself…the Quakers excommunicated the Webbs–they became Baptist so they could defend themselves…the Baptist were your fighters with the other fighters of America…they helped win the Independence…and I am related to many Signers of the Declaration of Independence…

The my family Baptist members were tired of all the fighting and killing and moved to KY in the 1800’s and became Church of Christ…
Some went back to being Baptist during Peaceful times…

I am also related to Abraham Lincoln who were Quakers in Mass…

My father’s family was Huguenots hiding from persecution from the Catholics left France and went to England.then America…to get away from fighting…related to George Mason Bill of Rights…who came to America to escape Cromwell and death…

We all know Persecution…My family is huge, they were pioneers and had many children some had 15-25 children and many of us married people of all Faiths, for Love…different races, I had a grandmother who was a daughter of a Cherokee Tribal Chief…Yona Qu Sadai…her husband William Mason, my grand father, was son of a Baptist Minister…They assisted the Indians in Tennessee and stayed with them to the reservations in the Trail of Tears…

…We are All of God…Love, Nancy

I’m a French Protestant, in my church and in some other Protestant churches I’ve been too I’ve never heard the minister criticize Catholics, and it’s true the other way round : I’ve been to Mass several times and I’ve never heard a priest criticize Protestants from the pulpit …
Usually we don’t mention each other, but about one year ago I went to Midnight Mass, the only mention about Protestants from the priest was a friendly one, he said something like “we can think about our Protestant brothers who also celebrate Christ’s birth at this very moment” ( in fact in France Protestants rarely have “midnight service” for Christmas, they have a service on the 25th December, in the morning, or on the nearest Sunday morning, in fact it depends … and the same church can organize the Christmas service differently each year … but probably he didn’t know … ) ; I was so moved by this friendly approach that I nearly felt like shouting " and some are even HERE WITH YOU !" … but of course I didn’t …

I have been told:

The local townspeople had requested the Priest be removed and the Church has since been closed…that was at least 15 years ago, or more…

Because of a shortage of priests in the area, I don’t think they will reopen the Church…

I was told he offended many people…We are becoming so united in many Faiths and races…We have to not be offensive…but, understanding of each others feelings…

You have good and bad in all churches. After attending many different protestant churches, I only heard a few speak badly about catholics. Even long before I knew anything about what catholics believed, I did not like it when I heard the bad remarks. I live in a small town and our local newspaper lets ministers write columns including the priest. I have never read anything in his column that put any other faith down but, we do have one baptist minister that makes really bad comments about catholics without coming right out and using the word catholic. Anyone with any knowledge of the catholic faith would know who he is talking about. I’m sure he is careful as the newspaper would not let him write if he came right out and stated who he was talking about, this really makes me angry, but on the other hand I feel he is not right with God to make the comments he does. Its as if he is filled with hate so I really feel sorry for him. The parish here has lenten services open to all and the Methodist always work with them. At one time I watched Charles Stanley on TV, I knew I disagreed with him on a lot but then he stated that " confessing your sins to a priest would not save you" I lost a lot of respect for him. Looking back now that I’m catholic, I knew very little about the catholic church but I did not like anyone to say bad things about the church. Maybe my soul somehow knew how much I would come to love the church and the catholic faith.🙂

If you were married in a Protestant church without a special dispensation from your bishop then the Catholic Church does not recognize you as being married before God. (Civilly married, yes, but not sacramentally married.) Therefore your sexual activities are considered fornication which is a mortal sin which would prevent your husband from receiving the Eucharist. I believe you mentioned that he continued to receive it anyway. If this is true, then he has compounded his sin by treating the body and blood of Jesus with contempt. However, this is not the same thing as excommunication.

Secondly, the priest could not possibly spend the entire Mass condemning Protestantism. If he said anything about it at all, it would have been during the homily which only lasts a few minutes. Based on what you have written here and in the past, I still don’t believe you. You may truly believe that what you are saying is true but I don’t believe a word of it.

I agree some ministers get carried away about other beliefs in a negative way…Because no one stops them it is poor upbringing, and bad thoughts…You are right they are filled with Hate…

No one wants to admit the minister has a problem…and the minister keeps pushing it…

Things seem to surface, and they get revealed in time…Look what happened when the ministers wife shot her husband in the head…she couldn’t deal with him…no one admitted he had a problem…I am sure his family knew what he was like…She feared for her children…

I agree we should not judge evryone by the few…I am glad you have found a Faith you are comfortable with.and people you are comfortable with…That is what is important…and keep revealing the bad as it happens, so we can all worship peacefully…

There are many that agree with you…I am surrouned by people of all faiths…We openly discuss the problems we entail, for the wellbeing of all…
Thanks for posting…
