Protestant Pastor Leads Protest - Day of Silence

I myself as a gay person who is also Catholic do support the day of silence because it is just that… How much more do you think teachers could educate if their students were silent. I dont think you understand there was an 8th grader that was murdered due to the fact that he was said to be gay. Is that right? Silence is by no means disruptive or corruptive nor does it push an agenda on anybody. Also just to remind you Catholics that Birth Control is on the same level as Homosexuality. I know that many people dont see it but there are many Catholic Homosexuals who are proud of their faith and except that we are all made differently. My partner and I are both Catholic and have a monogamous loving relationship. It doesnt really matter if you fight this to be honest gay rights are in our future. You can fight it if you want but your efforts would be better spent in other areas. Stand up for what you believe in Im all for that. Just remember that God loves all and that Jesus never taught intolerance, kinda one of those wwjd type things.

Tex, I agree. Being gay is not a choice ( I am not gay). God knows who you are going to be even before you are born. He loves everyone. Be strong and stand steadfast in your faith.
 
I think it is ashame the gay life style is being taught in our public schools. Why is it the gay community must show case their sexuality. I don’t see straight couples asking the public school system for a day to profess their life style. Can’t the gays just keep it in their bedroom.

Thank God for the Pastor for leading the protest. There is no place in our public schools for teaching gay life style.

As a Catholic I can’t believe the objections to this Pastor’s protest. I sense some people think the Catholic church is always 100% correct and everyone else is wrong.

Was Martin Luther 100% wrong? Was Martin Luther King 100% wrong? Is Billy Graham 100% wrong? Was Galileo 100% wrong? And as Catholic do we believe only Catholics are in Heaven?

Excuse me “leave it in the bedroom” Homosexuality should not be belittled to that. Many homosexuals care and love each other the same as heterosexual couples do. Why should they keep that in the bedroom? Now I believe across the board pda is rude and makes people uncomfortable though straight or gay. Also what is being taught in public schools… im sorry i just graduated a few years ago and i dont ever remember learning about being gay. I dont think that the day of silence is teaching anybody anything hello its a day of silence its not like their having a pride parade down the hallways. I think that Pastor is doing what he feels he needs to do, and I repect that. He has just as much of a reason to protest and vocalize his opinion as the students to being silent for a day.

Welcome. I hope your time here will be fruitful in developing a deeper understanding of the Catholic Faith. Could you please define “gay rights?” Are you proposing that the Church must agree to same-sex unions? Since same sex couples lack complementarity they cannot be considered ‘two become one.’ Therefore they could not be joined in a Sacrament.

Please also be aware that you have used some terms like ‘birth control’ incorrectly. The Church has stated that contraception is intrinsically evil. Birth control is just a secular term that can include abstinence. On the same note, homosexuality is also not intrinsically evil. It is disordered not evil. However, you are correct that homosexual acts and contraception are both mortal sins.

On the original topic: (Gee novel concept) This pastor was protesting students and teachers participating during school hours. This protest disrupted the day for students who just wanted to learn. But their teachers decided that it was more important to push their personal opinion than to educate the youth. Jesus taught Truth, not personal opinion. WWJD? He would protest the protest.

Tex, pontoon is just plain rude. You can’t listen to anyone. Only God will judge you. I think the gay lifestyle shouldn’t be taught in the schools, but that they should at least touch down on the subject to let others know that these people exist too.
You sound like a young man and my nephew is 20 years old and he is gay. I love him with all of my heart. He has not chosen to be gay, as he was around 12 he tells me that he was feeling funny. Sometimes I think there is a third gender.
 
As far as “leaving it in the bedroom”…I think that “straight” people should do the same…but I see ‘them’ parading their lifestyles in public all the time…holding hands…kissing…hugging…eating together at restaurants…I have gay friends and there are gay Friends in the Meeting I attend…if one didn’t know they were gay…and for the most part it’s the “straight” people who make an issue out of it…one wouldn’t know who was gay and who wasn’t gay…we know some of them are because they reqiested their unions to be placed under the care of the Meeting…and those relationships were placed under the care of the Meeting.

To be silent to witness to the injustice that gay people have to live with is hardly “teaching” about being gay.

I was reading an article in the paper the other day and it was pretty clear that the teachers would still educate and that many of the students who needed to speak for educational purposes would, but would be silent when it wasn’t necessary to speak. There is a separation of church and state so when I talk about gay rights I’m talking about in the legal matter not in a religious way… Though many churches (non- Catholic) are allowing unions in their faith. Gay rights to me are legal marriage/union and all the rights that are given to heterosexual marriages.
 
Is the day of silence being observed in Catholic schools? If it is the priests are not saying anything about the issue, which is par for the Catholic leadership. They tend to bury there heads in the sand about social issues in the United States. I am sure there will be no day of silence in Baptist schools.

Oh by the way rightousone you are wrong again. The Catholics lost 1% of followers and are at 23.5% pushing them into second place as Evangelicals moved ahead and now make up 25% of Christians in the United States.

The fastest growing religion in the Untied States is Islam. I wonder if there is a day of silence in Iran. How rude is that?

This is good to read. I saw that you did support the pastor in his protest. I heard the opposite about the teachers, though. I read, although I don’t have a link, that they planned to only use written communication, no verbal.

There are a lot of threads here on “rights” and what they mean. If you are interested in discussing that side I would enjoy participating in another thread. Please PM me if you start a thread on it.
 
Many of the local schools here in Houston are supporting the day of silence, and many of the teachers that are involved have chosen to speak for only educational purposes. I dont know how I feel about the teachers that take the choice not to speak. Whenever you take a position that requires you to communicate with people the lack of speaking could be an issue. I guess if they could effectively educate while not speaking than I think that would be an interesting educational environment for a day. I guess when you send your children to a public school ( and I understand sadly not everyone has the choice to send to private schools) you have to understand that they will be exposed to many different cultures and beliefs. I would really enjoy having a new thread on gay rights Littledeb…

To me Anthony Comstock is a Saint although I’d have to look up Church teaching on this as he was a protestant. Anthony Comstock, by himself, kept all the pornography out of America during the later part of the 19th century through the beginning of the 20th century. He was hired by the Christian Men’s Association to rid America of anything to do with pornography, birth control and abortion. He alone went after it all and if he had been younger when Margaret Sanger came on the scene, there would have been no Planned Parenthood I believe.

It was the rubber companies, BF Goodrich and Goodyear(condoms) who fought to take him down.

The birth control ruling that took place in 1960’s is Griswold vs. Comstock. This is the ruling that Roe vs. Wade is based on.

Wow. I hadn’t made that connection! Thanks for the new information. Sorry, but no, the Church has not been able to declare any Protestants saints. They have to be Catholic to be investigated in the first place.

I thought so. I have read many book on the lives of Saints and I have read books on his life and he is quite the man. Always a Christian, he fathered one child as I believe he and his wife were older when he married. From dawn until late into the night, he fought with every ounce of strength he had traveling from state to state to keep pornography, birth control and abortion illegal.
