What cannot be demonstrated from Scripture is that we are guaranteed to keep eternal life once we “have” it. If we were not free, which this side of eternity must mean the possibility of turning away from God, we would not truly have free will. Without free will, we cannot love. God would never take from us our ability to love.

But we do know that “a great multitude which no man [can] number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, [is] standing before thethrone” (in other words: Saints) and that an angel with a golden censer mingles much incense “with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before thethrone.” If a Saint in heaven is perfectly united to the will of the Lord, how is it that he or she could possibly not take a personal view of matters?
If we continue to sin and don’t repent of our ways, Jesus said told us to get away for he never knew us. If we continue to sin, we were never saved from the start for we never accepted Christ.

Many Catholics don’t think the Protestants will be saved, give me a break. How hypocritical when you consider the very teachings of the ccc state that the Muslims are included in God’s plan of Salvation for they share the same faith as Abraham. Well don’t the Protestants share the same faith as Abraham too? How about the Mormons? Need I go on with other denominations? Don’t bother answering it, it was a rhetorical question.
Not all Catholic agree with your conclusion, and you call yourself a Catholic. How dare you?

Anyways, the Catholic Church trust the mercy of God on who is saved. Mere man himself cannot judge who is saved since man cannot read man’s heart. Don’t make conclusions about the general population of Catholics. No human being has the ability to know who is saved and not.

Both of you misunderstand what infallible truly means. It’s actually spelled infallible not infallable.

Infallible means free from error from teaching moral and faith issues. Do not confuse infallibility with the word impeccable.

Impeccable- adj. 1. Having no flaws; perfect. See synonyms at perfect. 2. Incapable of sin or wrongdoing.

It is apparent that many Non-Catholics and even Catholics who do not understand the word infallible as defined by the Catholic Church.

Papal Infallibility: theology, papal infallibility is the dogma that, by action of the Holy Spirit, the Pope is preserved from even the possibility of error when he solemnly promulgates, or declares, to the Church a dogmatic teaching on faith or morals as being contained in divine revelation, or at least being intimately connected to divine revelation. The Holy Spirit also works though the body of the Church to ensure that all infallible teachings will be received by all Catholics.

The Pope and Bishops are not preserved from impeccable, especially the Pope.

Jesus did not promise his followers to be preserved from being impeccable.

He did promise, that the Spirit of Truth will guide them, the Holy Spirit. This gift was fulfilled on Pentecost Sunday (the birthday of the Church).

Jesus also promise that he will be with us until the end of time. To do that, he gave the apostles authority, and the apostles handed their what they learn from Jesus to their successors.

It is true that Jesus appointed Peter and the Apostles, but to reject them is to reject Jesus. “He who rejects you, rejects me, he who rejects me, rejects the one who sent me.”

You are wrong that God did not pick the Pope. “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20)

The cardinals who elect the Pope are spiritual servants of God’s people. They gather in God’s name. So God used the cardinals to elect a new Pope. Conclusion, God appointed the Popes who succeeded Peter.
(Edited by Moderator) Where two or more are gathered in my name? I have that here in my house and the Pope doesn’t reside here. There is so much politics involved. What other religious order has a seat at the United Nations? None. If the selection of the Pope is so divine, why don’t all the cardinals pick the same person? Do you not think that there wasn’t any corrupt Popes in history? Have you ever heard of the Holy Roman Empire? It has always had two leaders, one politcal and one religious. Take a guess who the religious leader was?

I’m drawing my conclusion from what your fellow Catholics are posting. Don’t shoot the messenger.

How can the Catholic Church believe the Muslims will be saved when Jesus says that in the end time, the word will be heard everywhere. No one gets to the Father without first going through the son, if you don’t accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, you are dead in your sins, do these sound familiar? Know if not because of political expedience, why did not the Church include all religions as being part of God’s plan of salvation? For does not God love all of his creatures? Or does he pick and choose? But Jesus will judge (according to the Father’s will) fairly everyman according to their deeds fathers will in the end.

What kind of Christian charity is it to say to another Christian, **get a life? **

I have ask the Holy Spirit to give me patience and charity that I may not lose my temper.

There were corrupt Popes, that I know much from history but none of them taught heretical doctrines. Popes have promoted war in the name of God like the Crusades for the defense of Christianity.

Yes, I have heard of the Holy Roman Empire during Emperor Charlemagne of France. These sins of men does not convince that the CC is in apostasy. Jesus even said in Matthew 23:2-3, "Then said Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice.”

  1. There is no need to get offensive.
  2. Please, name a corrupt Pope who made a dogmatic statement on faith and morals.
  3. If you do not accept the authority of the Pope, you are not Catholic. Please change your profile to reflect the truth.

I thought the Bible taught us to pray for our enemy and to turn the other cheek. Didn’t God always bless those that went into captivity willingly and kept the faith?

The issue with the Pharisees and the rest of the Jews was that God hardened their hearts so that the fulfillment of the Gentiles (Church) could take place. Read Romans 11 (I believe). In Zach 14 you’ll find out that when he steps on the Mount of Olives (prior to Armagedon) and reveals himself to the Jews, they will repent.

But Jesus also taught to beware of false prophets and teachings for they will increase like birth pains of a woman in labor. Nice to see that your familiar with Charlemagne. Now how many attempts do you suppose were made throughout history to revive that empire? The problem was each time that is was revived, conflict insued because of a power struggle between the polical and spiritual leader. I don’t think this is what Jesus had in mind. I’m just extremely cautious and pay particular attention to any teaching the Church has. I march to my own beat for I want answers and not just blind acceptance. Revelations paints a pretty horrific picture of the City on 7 Hills.

I’d have to back with you with the actual names. I do have a list of a few. As mentioned earlier, how about the salvation of Muslims and those that never new God. The Church teaches that they’ll be saved too. However God (1 Cor??) at conception planted his seed in our soul. By this no man can say that they did not know him. Jesus’ teachings in that anyone who doesn’t accept him as Lord and Savior is dead in their sins. Jesus said that in the end time, the gospel will be heard throughout the world. There’s various other scriptures that further support my views. I’m just tired of repeating myself. If you listen to the Church teaching, they say everyone is included in God’s plan of salvation. That’s not the case or else they would not go out of their way to include the Muslims only.
I disagree on the baptism of children. The NT is quite clear on the teaching of baptism. Yet if you think about it, when a kid goes through confirmation, it’s not baptism. The Church’s defense of baptism always goes back to the circumcision of children 8 days of age or older in the OT. However in the NT is never once said to not circumcise. Infact you are suppose to keep the law. The last verse of Romans 3 substantiates that. The Bible clearly states that to accept Christ, you accept the Gospel as the Word of God. An infant does not have that ability. But children are included in God’s plan of salvation already. Jesus said himself, unless you humble yourself like that of a child, you’ll never inherit the kingdom of God. Once they reach that age of reason and know what sin is (by way of the conscience that God planted in each of us), they inherit the kingdom of God. There are other issues, but a couple for now.

Lastly Christ is the Church, not the Pope! I accept Jesus’ teachings that are Biblical. A lot of the teachings of the Church are theological with very little to no basis. Jesus opposed divorce, Any many that divorces and remarries commits adultery, It’s amazing that the Church can annul any marriage as if it never happened even if it took place before God, Moses allowed for divorce due to the hardening of man’s heart on limited grounds, In a nutshell, the Catholic Church has more exceptions to the teachings of Christ than any church denomination that I’ve attended,

I march to my own beat for I want answers and not just blind acceptance. Revelations paints a pretty horrific picture of the City on 7 Hills.
And you believe that?

Crying shame you’re dead wrong Shawn.
Some anti-Catholics claim the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon of Revelation 17 and 18. Dave Hunt, in his 1994 book, A Woman Rides the Beast, presents nine arguments to try to prove this. His claims are a useful summary of those commonly used by Fundamentalists, and an examination of them shows why they don’t work.

#1: Seven Hills

Hunt argues that the Whore “is a city built on seven hills,” which he identifies as the seven hills of ancient Rome. This argument is based on Revelation 17:9, which states that the woman sits on seven mountains.

The Greek word in this passage is horos. Of the sixty-five occurrences of this word in the New Testament, only three are rendered “hill” by the King James Version. The remaining sixty-two are translated as “mountain” or “mount.” Modern Bibles have similar ratios. If the passage states that the Whore sits on “seven mountains,” it could refer to anything. Mountains are common biblical symbols, often symbolizing whole kingdoms (cf. Ps. 68:15; Dan. 2:35; Amos 4:1, 6:1; Obad. 8–21). The Whore’s seven mountains might be seven kingdoms she reigns over, or seven kingdoms with which she has something in common.

The number seven may be symbolic also, for it often represents completeness in the Bible. If so, the seven mountains might signify that the Whore reigns over all earth’s kingdoms.

Even if we accept that the word horos should be translated literally as “hill” in this passage, it still does not narrow us down to Rome. Other cities are known for having been built on seven hills as well.

Even if we grant that the reference is to Rome, which Rome are we talking about—pagan Rome or Christian Rome? As we will see, ancient, pagan Rome fits all of Hunt’s criteria as well, or better, than Rome during the Christian centuries.

Now bring in the distinction between Rome and Vatican City—the city where the Catholic Church is headquartered—and Hunt’s claim becomes less plausible. Vatican City is not built on seven hills, but only one: Vatican Hill, which is not one of the seven upon which ancient Rome was built. Those hills are on the east side of the Tiber river; Vatican Hill is on the west. Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

I’d have to back with you with the actual names. I do have a list of a few.

Don’t hurt yourself looking because there are none. Messed up as those guys were they were too busy havin’ “fun” to bother with doctrine, so your allegation is without factual basis.

You might want to make very sure that your “issues” are not fueled by exposure to anti-Catholic propaganda before you go off like this. Especially around here where a lot of the Catholics are pretty knowledgeable about our most holy faith.
Pax tecum,

If we continue to sin and don’t repent of our ways, Jesus said told us to get away for he never knew us. If we continue to sin, we were never saved from the start for we never accepted
Christ. Can you show me a passage of scripture that speaks of “accepting Christ”? I don’t think you can because there isn’t one. I suggest that you read the parable of the wheat and tares and sower and the seed.

And you believe that?

Crying shame you’re dead wrong Shawn. Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.
Give me the name of 3 other cities known as the City on Seven Hills. Lets look at some other things. 1. Cast dust on their heads. What other religion cast dust on their heads? We do it on Ash Wednesday. 2. Clothed in Purple and Scarlett (Official colors of the Bishops and Cardinals) 3. Kings have fornicated with her. Rome is known for trading just about everything with the kings and leaders of the world. 4. Drunken with the blood of the saints and prophets. How many people has the church killed in the name of God 5. Known as the Mother of Harlots. What is a harlot? A female prostitute. This is completely the opposite of the virgin church of Christ with Christ being the Bridegroom. Why mother? A woman is known to be a mother once she has children. The Catholic Church is known as the Mother Church. The daughters are the Protestant denominations that branched off from her. There are a couple other things. The point is you could dismiss or pass onto other cities some of the signs, but what are the chances of such a beautiful match. Take the City on Seven Hills, whether it’s the name or nickname, how many are in the world? Now subtract the cities whose official colors are purple and scarlett. Do we have any left?
Now the first beast that comes up out of the water is clothed in white, has a bow with no arrows, and a crown on its head. A horse is symbolic of doctrine. Who could this possibly be? I do know that the staff that the Pope carries is also called a bow, he’s clothed in white, and wears a crown. Take the latin inscription on the Popes crown and calculate the number. It’s amazing how the number calculates out to 666. Not enough? I know in Catholic teaching there is a prophecized corrupt Pope to come.
Jesus told John at the beginning of Revelations that blessed are those that read and understand this prophecy. I’m just keeping my eyes open and hanging on to every last word I hear the priest say. Do I believe our priest is part of the corruption, no. I’m hoping that the Catholic Church in the US decides to branch off from the Vatican. I heard it was a possiblity. In the Biblical timeline someone big comes around every two thousand years: 4000 bc - Adam, 2000 bc - Abraham, 2 bc - Christ, 2000 ad - Who bigger than the coming Messiah? So many signs are there, you just have to be willing to see them.

Babylon - Jerusalem

In Revelation we find references to both Heavenly Jerusalem, and Babylon Jerusalem, which represent the two paths for mankind.

The Book of Revelation is highly symbolic. So, it is best for a person to familiarize oneself with the rest of Sacred Scriptures, the Bible, because it is there that Saint John would be able to draw upon meanings that he knew his readers would be able to pick up on. These clues clearly point to Babylon as being a code name for the corrupt city of Jerusalem, possibly just before 70 AD. Those who contend that Babylon is Rome must ignore all the Biblical evidence to the contrary and interject non-biblical suppositions which are usually based on preconceived notions.

SEVEN HILLS

Revelation 17:9-10 “Here is a clue for one who has wisdom. The seven heads represent seven hills upon which the woman sits. They also represent seven kings: five have already fallen, one still lives, and the last has not yet come, and when he comes he must remain only a short while.”

Some have tried to claim that the Roman Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon by pointing out that Rome has been referred to as a city on seven hills. The Seven Hills of Rome are; the Palatine, Aventine, Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, and the Caelian Hill. However, Saint Peter’s Basilica was built on Vatican Hill, Collis Vaticanus, which is on the other side of the Tiber River and is not one of these Seven Hills. St. Peter Basilica’s high altar was built directly on top of Saint Peter’s grave which was outside of the city and across the river. [See the book The Bones of St. Peter by John Evangelist Walsh]

The reference to the seven hills does fit in regards to Jerusalem.

Jerusalem was a large city spreading beyond the walls of the fort and onto the seven hills there during the time of Jesus and the Apostles. It’s seven hills are; 1.) Mount Gared; 2.) Mount Goath; 3.) Mount Acra; 4.) Mount Bezetha; 5.) Mount Moriah; 6.) Mount Ophel; 7.) Mount Zion. Sometimes, some will substitute the first four with the Mount of Olives, Mount of Offence, Mount of Evil Counsel, and Mount Calvary.

Mount Calvary is presently leveled for the most part. It was a major quarry that was used for the building of the city. As the quarrymen cut into the stone layer by layer they discovered a section that was flawed. A crack in that section made it unusable so they cut around it. As they cut and cleared away the stone slabs from around the flawed section it left an outcropping rising thirty feet from the floor of the quarry to where the top of the hill had once been. It was into this flawed crack that the Roman’s placed the upright beam of the cross of the criminals that they crucified to place fear into their subjects. And it was here that our Savior gave his life for our salvation.

CODE NAME

Revelation 17:5-6
“On her forehead was written a name, which is a mystery, ‘Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth.’ I saw that the woman was drunk on the blood of the holy ones and on the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. When I saw her I was greatly amazed.”

Babylon was a code name, a “mystery.” Compare how Jerusalem is referred to similar code names such as Sodom, Gomorrah, and Egypt. All of these, Sodom, Gomorrah, Egypt, and Babylon are all notorious enemies of God’s people.

Isaiah 1: 1, 9-10
“The vision which Isaiah, son of Amoz, had concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
…9 Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a scanty remnant, We had become as Sodom, we should be like Gomorrah. Hear the word of the LORD, princes of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, people of Gomorrah !”

Moses warns the Jews how God will punish them and destroy their land if they forsake the covenant.

Deuteronomy 29: 22-24
“…all its soil being nothing but sulphur and salt, a burnt-out waste, unsown and unfruitful, without a blade of grass, destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in his furious wrath— they and all the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD dealt thus with this land? Why this fierce outburst of wrath?’ And the answer will be, ‘Because they forsook the covenant which the LORD, the God of their fathers, had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt…”

Jeremiah 23:14
“But among Jerusalem’s prophets I saw deeds still more shocking: Adultery, living in lies, siding with the wicked, so that no one turns from evil; To me they are all like Sodom, its citizens like Gomorrah.”

Romans 9:27-29
"And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, ‘Though the number of the Israelites were like the sand of the sea, only a remnant will be saved; for decisively and quickly will the Lord execute sentence upon the earth.’ And as Isaiah predicted: ‘Unless the Lord of hosts had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom
and have been made like Gomorrah.’ " NAB

John in his Book of Revelation continues this use of code names for the “great city.” He is using symbolism to refer to people who had betrayed God’s people.

Revelation 11:8
“Their corpses will lie in the main street of the great city, which has the symbolic names ‘Sodom’ and ‘Egypt,’ where indeed their Lord was crucified.”

This passage in Revelation 11: 8 is most important because it clues us in as to where this “great city” is. It is “where indeed their Lord was crucified.” It is Jerusalem.

“BABYLON” IS CALLED THE GREAT CITY

Revelation 18:10
"They will keep their distance for fear of the torment inflicted on her, and they will say: ‘Alas, alas, great city, Babylon, mighty city. In one hour your judgment has come.’ "
NAB

Jerusalem is also called the great city.

Jeremiah 22:4-8
"If you carry out these commands, kings who succeed to the throne of David will continue to enter the gates of this palace, riding in chariots or mounted on horses, with their ministers, and their people. But if you do not obey these commands, I swear by myself, says the LORD: this palace shall become rubble. For thus says the LORD concerning the palace of the king of Judah: Though you be to me like Gilead,
like the peak of Lebanon, I will turn you into a waste, a city uninhabited. Against you I will send destroyers, each with his axe: They shall cut down your choice cedars,
and cast them into the fire. Many people will pass by this city and ask one another: ‘Why has the LORD done this to so great a city ?’ "

I have no basis to see it as “the work of God”. Scripture doesn’t tell me I have to either.
That’s exactly what the Pharisees said about Jesus, isn’t it?
**And that is talking about “dead” saints? Where does it say they pray for YOU? **
If the Saints – who, as Scripture tells us are ‘dead’ only in the flesh, but who definitely live in God, are in Christ and conformed perfectly to him, do they not do what he does: intercede for us at the right hand of God? (Rom 8:34) And if they are conformed perfectly in Christ, how could their intercession *not *be personal?
**The whole Bible proves that John is in heaven. I should not have to explain it to you. If you understand anything at all about Christianity you would not have even had to say that. I didn’t fail to show you anything; you failed to grasp what you were told. **
This is an extravagant claim. The “whole Bible?” Catholics believe John is in heaven. Y’know: we call him a Saint; if he is a Saint, where else would he be? If you don’t have a problem with John being a Saint in heaven, what’s the problem with understanding that Barnabas is there, or Our Lady, or Justin Martyr, Athanasius, or any other of our holy brothers and sisters gone before us in witness tot he blood of Christ? We might return the observation that you fail to grasp what has been amply demonstrated.
**The devil can do “miracles” too. Have you read Exodus? I believe in miracles, however never at the expense of the written revelation of God. How are your prayers heard through the answers to your prayers? I don’t understand that. **
When our friends pray for us, and the Lord blesses their intercession for us, are those prayers vain? Do we not credit the Lord with hearing their prayers because their prayers have been answered?

BABYLON" AND THE DEATHS OF THE PROPHETS

Revelation 17:5-6
“On her forehead was written a name, which is a mystery, ‘Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth.’ I saw that the woman was drunk on the blood of the holy ones and on the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. When I saw her I was greatly amazed.”

Revelation 18:24
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and holy ones and all who have been slain on the earth." NAB

Compare them with these statements about Jerusalem

Luke 11:47-51
“Woe to you! You build the memorials of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.
Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’ in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood !”

Luke 13:31-34
"At that time some Pharisees came to him and said, ‘Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.’ … Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.’ ‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling !’ "

Matthew 23:29-36;
" ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, “If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.” Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out ! You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of Gehenna ? Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, so that there may come upon you all the righteous blood shed upon earth, from the righteous blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.’ "

24:34
“Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.”

A CITY WITH FINE CLOTHING AND PRECIOUS STONES

Revelation 18:16-17
“…Alas, alas, great city, wearing fine linen, purple and scarlet, adorned (in) gold, precious stones, and pearls. In one hour this great wealth has been ruined.”

Exodus 35: 30 - 36: 1

"Moses said to the Israelites, ‘See, the LORD has chosen Bezalel… of the tribe of Judah, and has filled him with a divine spirit of skill and understanding and knowledge in every craft: in the production of embroidery, in making things of gold, silver or bronze, in cutting and mounting precious stones, in carving wood, and in every other craft. …He has endowed them with skill to execute all types of work: engraving, embroidering, the making of variegated cloth of violet, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen thread, weaving, and all other arts and crafts. ‘Bezalel, therefore, will set to work with Oholiab and with all the experts whom the LORD has endowed with skill and understanding in knowing how to execute all the work for the service of the sanctuary, just as the LORD has commanded.’ "

Exodus 39: 1-2, 8-14
“With violet, purple and scarlet yarn were woven the service cloths for use in the sanctuary, as well as the sacred vestments for Aaron, as the LORD had commanded Moses. The ephod was woven of gold thread and of violet, purple and scarlet yarn and of fine linen twined…
(8) The breastpiece was embroidered like the ephod, with gold thread and violet, purple and scarlet yarn on cloth of fine linen twined. … Four rows of precious stones were mounted on it: in the first row a carnelian, a topaz and an emerald; in the second row, a garnet, a sapphire and a beryl; in the third row a jacinth, an agate and an amethyst; in the fourth row a chrysolite, an onyx and a jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree work. These stones were twelve, to match the names of the sons of Israel, and each stone was engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.”
